Abstract: | Effects of vasoconstrictory and of dilatory hormones were studied on the contractile activity of cultured rat kidney mesangial cells. By phase contrast microscopy, a rapid contraction was seen of most cells treated with angiotensin II (10(-6) - 10(-10) mol/L), which was sometimes followed by autonomous relaxation after 10 to 20 min. Prostaglandin E2 and atriopeptin III prevented the contractile effect of angiotensin II in a dose-dependent manner. Angiotensin II, but not atriopeptin III, stimulated prostaglandin E2 synthesis in mesangial cell cultures. |
