Abstract: | A two-allele diploid model is described in which the fitnesses of the three genotypes are stationary stochastic processes. It is shown that a stable polymorphism will occur if the geometric mean fitness of the heterozygote exceeds that of both homozygotes. It is possible for the mean fitness of the population to be lower in polymorphic than in the associated monomorphic populations. |
