Localisation of low molecular weight sperm antigens during capacitation and acrosome reaction

Abstract:FITC-labelled sperm-specific antibodies against hamster spermatozoa were utilized as probes in acrosome reaction assays. An indirect immunofluorescence test demonstrated the localisation of two sperm proteins of 19 kDa and 23 kDa on the anterior acrosomal cap region of washed cauda epididymal sperm. These proteins were not detected in reacted acrosome or on immature or immotile sperm. Antisperm agglutinating antibodies specific to these two low molecular weight sperm antigens could be useful probes for evaluating the acrosomal status of mammalian spermatozoa.
