Acorn dispersal estimated by radio-tracking 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Bird-dispersed seeds are difficult to track, especially in the case of long-distance dispersal events. To estimate the oak
dispersal distance and the seed shadow generated by the European jay (Garrulus glandarius), we inserted radio-transmitters in 239 acorns, placed them in bird-feeders and then located them by radio-tracking. Using
this methodology we located the exact caching site of 94 Quercus ilex and 54 Q. suber acorns and determined the caching habitat characteristics (vegetation type, distance, spatial distribution). The results
show that: (1) there is no differences in the dispersal distance distribution between the different acorn species or sizes,
(2) dispersal distances range from approximately 3 m up to approximately 550 m (mean = 68.6 m; median = 49.2 m), (3) recently
abandoned fields and forest tracks were the sites preferred by jays to cache acorns, whereas fields and shrublands were avoided
and (4) seed shadows showed acorn aggregation zones (i.e. clusters of caches) close to the feeder as well as isolated caches
at longer distances. The results also suggest that radio-transmitters are a cheap and reliable way to determine seed shadows
and quantify both seed dispersal and post-dispersal seed predation for medium to large seeds. 相似文献

An adult, female bottlenose dolphin ( Tursiops trucncatus ) was radio tagged and monitored via satellite-based Argos receivers for 25 d from 28 June to 23 July 1990, in Tampa Bay, Florida. A total of 794 transmissions were obtained during 106 satellite passes. A mean of 3.9 (SE = 0.24) locations/day were determined by Service Argos and showed the animal remained in the bay, usually close to the southeastern shore. The dolphin moved at least 581 km at a minimum mean speed of 1.2 (SE = 0.1) km/h. Data from 63, 922 dives were recorded. The animal spent an average of 87.1 (SE = 0.6)% of the time submerged, with a mean dive duration of 25.8 (SE = 0.5) sec. Mean dive duration differed significantly between four periods of the day, as did the mean percent of time spent submerged. During the early morning the animal spent more time at the surface, averaged shorter dives, and was submerged less than other times of day. This is the first study to demonstrate die1 dive cycles in a bottlenose dolphin. Four months after tag loss, the dolphin was photographed with no evidence of necrosis or disfigurement of the dorsal fin. Satellite telemetry was demonstrated as an effective means of documenting the movements and dive behavior of a small inshore cetacean. 相似文献

Migration and spawning behaviour of eight Atlantic salmon adult females were analysed by radio-tracking in relation to the degree of sexual maturity in a spawning tributary of the R. Sélune. Six of them were grilse and four of them were ripe. All the fish migrated upstream until reaching their spawning site at a distance of 4–12 km from the trap. The daily migration rate up to this site was inversely correlated with the length of the female. Spawning occurred in all fish at the same time when the water temperature increased dramatically. Spawning lasted 1–10 days according to the fish. After spawning, females quickly moved downstream only small distances and then stayed in approximately the same location until death. This study concluded that ripeness did not influence behaviour on the spawning migration and describes certain characteristics of the reproductive phase in a spawning tributary. 相似文献

Effects of territorial intrusions on eavesdropping neighbors: communication networks in nightingales 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Animal communication often occurs in communication networksin which multiple signalers and receivers are within signalingrange of each other. In such networks, individuals can obtaininformation on the quality and motivation of territorial neighborsby eavesdropping on their signaling interactions. In songbirds, extracting information from interactions involving neighborsis thought to be an important factor in the evolution of strategiesof territory defense. In a playback experiment with radio-taggednightingales Luscinia megarhynchos we here demonstrate thatterritorial males use their familiar neighbors' performancein a vocal interaction with an unfamiliar intruder as a standardfor their own response. Males were attracted by a vocal interactionbetween their neighbor and a simulated stranger and intrudedinto the neighbor's territory. The more intensely the neighborhad interacted with playback, the earlier the intrusions weremade, indicating that males eavesdropped on the vocal contestinvolving a neighbor. However, males never intruded when wehad simulated by a second playback that the intruder had retreatedand sang outside the neighbor's territory. These results suggestthat territorial males use their neighbors' singing behavioras an early warning system when territorial integrity is threatened.Simultaneous responses by neighboring males towards unfamiliarrivals are likely to be beneficial to the individuals in maintainingterritorial integrity. 相似文献
