Suitability of glycerin-preserved otoliths for age validation using bomb radiocarbon 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effect of glycerin storage on the bomb radiocarbon content of otoliths was determined experimentally. Storage in either pre- or post-bomb glycerin had no detectable effect on the bomb radiocarbon content of either pre- or post-bomb otoliths. Therefore bomb-dated age validation studies need not be restricted to freshly-collected samples or dry otoliths, implying that the large numbers of glycerin-archived otoliths around the world are suitable for age validation studies using bomb radiocarbon. 相似文献

Relationships between live and preserved lengths of larval and juvenile bass, Dicentrarchus labrax , subjected to simulated capture, net retention and preservation were investigated. Bass larvae and juveniles shrank during the period of net retention following death. Preserved lengths of larvae, but not of juveniles, decreased significantly when increased periods of net retention preceded preservation. The time which larvae or juveniles remained in 4% formaldehyde in distilled water buffered with 3gl−1 sodium acetate trihydrate or in 70% ethanol in distilled water neutralized with 1gl−1 calcium carbonate powder, had no significant effect upon preserved length. Appropriate data were pooled to calculate transformation factors for estimating live from preserved length. Shrinkage phenomena, and their effects, are discussed. It is suggested that larval bass captured and preserved during standard ichthyoplankton surveys are unsuitable for determination of live length. 相似文献

Extramorphological Features of Sauropod Dinosaur Tracks in the Uhangri Formation (Cretaceous), Korea

Sauropod footprints in the Uhangri Formation (Cretaceous) of Korea exhibit an unusual pattern of morphology, with the interior of each print partitioned into a series of pockets by conspicuous radial crests. The crests are evidently extramorphological features and have been interpreted as upwellings of sediment extruded through the floor of the footprint following its fracture by impact of the trackmaker's foot. That explanation entails some inconsistencies, and an alternative explanation is proposed here. The alternative explanation envisages delamination of a superficial sheet of sediment that was lifted into a canopy, which subsequently collapsed in radiating folds. The superficial sheet of sediment might have been lifted by either or both of two mechanisms—by adhering to the underside of the trackmaker's foot or by being forced upward into a blister-like dome by the backflow of water previously displaced by impact of the trackmaker's foot. It is hypothesized that iron from biological tissues, liberated during decay, may have played a role in inhibiting loss of anatomical information during fossilization of extinct organisms. Most tissues in the animal kingdom contain iron in different forms. A widely distributed iron-bearing molecule is ferritin, a globular protein that contains iron crystallites in the form of ferrihydrite minerals. Iron concentrations in ferritin are high and ferrihydrites are extremely reactive. When ancient animals are decaying on the sea floor under anoxic environmental conditions, ferrihydrites may initialize the selective replication of some tissues in pyrite FeS2. This model explains why some labile tissues are preserved, while other more resistant structures decay and are absent in many fossils. A major implication of this hypothesis is that structures described as brains in Cambrian arthropods are not fossilization artifacts, but are instead a source of information on anatomical evolution at the dawn of complex animal life. 相似文献

This paper highlights possible effects of physical and chemical mechanisms of formalin fixation and preservation on biological tissue and reviews the consequent potential inaccuracies on estimates of body mass of small fishes fixed and preserved in formalin. Twenty-six papers including 65 independent experiments with 35 species which examine effects of formalin on body mass estimates on small fishes are included. The effect of the formalin on the specimens depends on the salinity of the water used to dilute the commercial formalin (usually 1:9 formalin: water) before being used to fixate and preserve fish. Mean wet body mass of the specimens from the studies using seawater or fresh water diluted formalin deceases by 13% and increases by 7%, respectively, from before to after being immersed in formalin. The same trend is found with condition factor in the few papers that report this parameter. Body length decreases on average by c. 2% in fixated and preserved fish regardless of whether the formalin is diluted in seawater or fresh water. 相似文献

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among reproductive aged women, and its treatment can compromise future fertility. Options for fertility preservation include oocyte or embryo cryopreservation after ovarian stimulation (OS), which are the most established choices and are applicable for adult women with cancer. Ovarian tissue freezing may also be appropriate, as it offers potentially the least delay. The recognisation of the role of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in some women has led to the involvement of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), recently renamed preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disorder (PGT-M), whereby embryos are created by IVF and cell(s) are removed and genetically analyzed for specific disease-related mutations. PGT-M offers a valid option for women wishing to avoid transmission of the predisposition for hereditary breast cancer to their offspring. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the factors that influence fertility preservation in newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, and to illustrate the option of PGT-M to enable conception of an unaffected child. 相似文献

Two locally-produced seasonal vegetables, carrot and patol, were preserved in brine, with and without radiation, with marked changes in their properties as foods and their microbiology. The treated vegetables could be preserved, at optimum salt and irradiation levels, for up to 60 days without becoming unacceptable in terms of appearance, texture, flavour and taste. The optimum salt concentrations for preservation of carrot and patol were 2% (w/v) and 3% (w/v), respectively. The microbial load initially showed an upward trend and then declined after 5 to 10 days of storage. Lactic acid bacteria predominated in treated vegetables. 相似文献

目的:探究脾脏保留手术对外伤性脾破裂患者免疫功能的影响。方法:选取2015年8月~2018年9月我院收治的外伤性脾破裂患者83例进行回顾性分析,根据手术方式不同分为两组,对照组(41例)患者给予脾脏切除术,观察组(42例)患者给予脾脏保留手术。比较两组患者的手术时间、术中出血量、下床活动时间、术后1d引流量、抢救成功率及治疗前后CD3~+、CD4~+、CD8~+和Tuftsin因子水平和并发症的发生情况。结果:治疗后,观察组患者的手术时间、术中出血量、术后下床时间和术后1d引流量均显著短于或低于对照组,而救治成功率显著高于对照组(P0.05)。两组患者治疗后的CD3~+、CD4~+和CD4~+/CD8~+水平均较治疗前显著下降,且观察组以上指标均显著高于对照组(P0.05)。对照组治疗后血清Tuftsin因子水平较治疗前显著下降,而观察组血清Tuftsin因子水平较治疗前显著升高,并显著高于对照组(P0.05)。观察组患者的总并发症发生率为7.14%,较对照组(24.39%)显著降低(P0.05)。结论:与脾脏切除术相比,脾脏保留手术可显著改善外伤性脾破裂患者的免疫功能,且手术效果更好,安全性更高。 相似文献
