Ghrelin is the endogenous ligand for the growth hormone secretagogue receptor. We investigated the distribution and morphological characteristics of ghrelin-immunopositive (ghrelin-ip) cells in the African ostrich adrenal gland. We found that the adrenal gland of the African ostrich consisted of three parts: capsule, inter-renal tissue and chromaffin cells. The inter-renal tissue and chromaffin cells interdigitated irregularly. The inter-renal tissue consisted of a peripheral zone and a central inner zone. The peripheral zone could be divided into an outer subcapsular zone and an inner zone. The subcapsular zone cells were arranged as a bow, while the inner area cells formed cords that were perpendicular to the capsule. The central inner zone exhibited irregular clumps and the cells were morphologically similar to chromaffin cells. Ghrelin-ip cells were located throughout the adrenal gland except the capsule. The majority of ghrelin-ip cells were found among the chromaffin cells. The number of ghrelin-ip cells in the inter-renal tissue decreased gradually from the central inner zone, to the inner zone to the subcapsular zone. The ghrelin-ip cells were oval or irregular in shape and exhibited cytoplasmic staining. Our findings suggest that ghrelin may play a role in regulating adrenal hormone secretion in the African ostrich.  相似文献

Ostrich breeding behaviour in the Serengeti ecosystem, Tanzania was investigated for differences in laying dates between low altitude western area (WA) and high altitude eastern area (EA) populations. Ostriches in WA laid eggs significantly earlier than in EA. The differences could be attributed to topography and rainfall pattern. Reliable rains in lower altitudes ensure availability of food that in turn influences the whole process of the reproductive cycle. Clutches were contributed by several females with a nest having up to 38 eggs. We also compared the frequency of observation of predators, ostriches, nests, 'singletons' (single eggs laid randomly) and broods between the two areas. There was no significant difference between WA and EA in 1) ostrich/nest ratio, indicating similar breeding densities; 2) ostrich/predator and predator/nest ratios, indicating that predation pressure was equally high; 3) nest/singleton and predator/singleton ratios, indicating that loss of nests did not vary between areas. However, there were significantly more predators, nests and ostriches compared to broods in EA than in WA, indicating a significantly lower reproductive success in EA. Using metapopulation terminology, ostriches in EA could be regarded as a 'sink' population and those in WA as a 'source' population, but investigations over longer time-periods are needed to further resolve if this is the case.  相似文献

The subdivisions of the trigeminal nerve (N. ophthalmicus R. medialis and N. intramandibularis) innervating the upper and lower bill tip, respectively, were well developed in both the ostrich and emu and displayed extensive branching. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that both nerves displayed features typical of a mixed, peripheral nerve. Nerve fibre size in the ostrich and emu was larger than that reported in domestic poultry. There were a significantly higher number of myelinated nerve fibres in the N. ophthalmicus R. medialis in the emu by comparison with the same nerve in the ostrich, or by comparison with the N. intramandibularis of either species. As myelinated nerve fibres supply Herbst corpuscles, and these structures have been demonstrated in this region in these two species, this may indicate that the upper bill of the emu is more sensitive to vibrational stimuli than the upper bill of the ostrich or the lower bill of both species. The large size of the nerve fibres, the high nerve fibre count and the particular distribution of the nerves in the bill tip support the existence of a well‐developed sensory area in this region of the ostrich and emu.  相似文献

The ostrich breeding system is complex and unique; communal clutches are laid by several females, although only one female, the major female, and the resident territorial male provide parental care. More eggs are laid in the nest than can be incubated and the major female ejects surplus eggs from the incubated central clutch. Microsatellite markers were used to analyse the parentage of communal nests in Nairobi National Park. This revealed that major females contributed a disproportionate number of fertile eggs to the central, incubated clutch and that multiple paternity and maternity within a nest were common; 68.9% of all incubated eggs on a nest were not parented by both the resident territorial male and the major female of that nest. All the males fertilized eggs on the clutches of neighbouring males. Unexpectedly, every major female with her own nest was also simultaneously a minor female with incubated eggs on neighbouring clutches. The relatedness between females laying in the same nest was not significantly different from the population average and significantly less than that between chicks hatched from the same nest.  相似文献

An antimicrobial peptide, ostricacin-1, has been purified and characterized from ostrich leukocytes. The peptide has a mass of 4011 and contained 36 residues, including 3 intramolecular cystine disulfide bonds. Ostricacin-1 has a primary sequence homology to the -defensin family and was active at 6.7 g ml–1 against E. coli and Staphylocccus aureus in vitro.  相似文献

This study describes the persistence of an embryonal structure through to sub-adulthood in the ostrich and emu. Mandibles from sub-adult ostrich and emu were subjected to special staining, light microscopy and dissected to reveal and describe Meckel's cartilage. Meckel's cartilage, composed of hyaline cartilage, was present within the neurovascular canal of both species. The persistence through to sub-adulthood of Meckel's cartilage in the ostrich and emu is a feature not previously reported in any other avian species. The proximal end of Meckel's cartilage was ossified in the region of the articular bone and the distal end was ossified in some specimens. Although this structure may ossify at a much later stage in life, the function in young and sub-adult birds may be to dampen shockwaves along the intramandibular nerve that result from the action of pecking. In the ostrich, the M. pseudotemporalis superficialis tendon inserted onto the supra-angular bone and Meckel's cartilage. In the emu, a small portion of the tendon was attached to the supra-angular bone and the main part to Meckel's cartilage. The persistence of Meckel's cartilage in adult lepidosaurs, crocodilians and ratites represents an unusual shared trait between the extant members of the above groups.  相似文献

The gross morphology and the flexibility along the neck of the ostrich (Struthio camelus) were examined using fresh tissue as well as neck skeletons. The results of the morphologic studies were compared with results from observations of living ostriches. The investigation was focused on differences in the morphology and the function between different sections of the neck. Additionally, the function of major dorsal neck ligaments was examined, including measurements of force-strain-relations. Comparative studies of giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) and camels (Camelus bactrianus) were conducted to find relations between the flexibility along the neck and the general feeding strategy. The examinations revealed that the neck of the ostrich can be divided into four sections with different functions. The first is the atlas-axis-complex which is responsible for torsion. The adjacent cranial section of the neck is flexible in dorsoventral and lateral directions but this part of the neck is usually kept straight at rest and during feeding. Dorsoventral flexibility is highest in the middle section of the neck, whereas the base of the neck is primarily used for lateral excursions of the neck. For giraffes and camels, the posture and utilization of the neck are also reflected in the flexibility of the neck. For all three species, it is possible to reconstruct the pattern of flexibility of the neck by using the neck skeletons alone. Therefore, it appears reasonable to reconstruct the neck utilization and the feeding strategies of dinosaurs with long necks by deriving the flexibility of the neck from preserved vertebrae. For Diplodocus carnegii the neck posture and the feeding strategy were reconstructed. Two neck regions, one around the 9th neck vertebra and the second at the base of the neck, indicate that Diplodocus, like the ostrich, adopted different neck postures. The neck was probably kept very low during feeding. During interruptions of the feeding, e.g., in an alert, the head could have been lifted in an economic way by raising the cranial section of the neck. During standing and locomotion the head was probably located well above the shoulders.  相似文献

为探讨分子遗传标记在鸵鸟(Struthio camelus)育种中的应用,利用RAPD技术分析了我国养殖的三个主要要鸵鸟品种内和品种间的遗传变异。蓝颈鸵鸟、澳洲灰和非洲黑三个品种在品种内和品种间显示出低水平的变异。品种间的遗传距离好地说胆了三个品种的育种改良过程。同时预示出用澳洲灰与其他品种鸵鸟进行杂交育种的可行性。选择的20条在鸡中能稳定扩增的RAPD引物其75%能在鸵鸟基因组中扩增出产物。显示出两种禽类DNA具有同源性、为今后利用鸡的微卫星引物对鸵鸟进行基因扫描(genome scan)分析奠定基础。  相似文献
