Jasmonate-mediated induced plant resistance affects a community of herbivores   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17  
1. The negative effect of induced plant resistance on the preference and performance of herbivores is a well‐documented ecological phenomenon that is thought to be important for both plants and herbivores. This study links the well‐developed mechanistic understanding of the biochemistry of induced plant resistance in the tomato system with an examination of how these mechanisms affect the community of herbivores in the field. 2. Several proteins that are induced in tomato foliage following herbivore damage have been linked causally to reductions in herbivore performance under laboratory conditions. Application of jasmonic acid, a natural elicitor of these defensive proteins, to tomato foliage stimulates induced responses to herbivory. 3. Jasmonic acid was sprayed on plants in three doses to generate plants with varying levels of induced responses, which were measured as increases in the activities of proteinase inhibitors and polyphenol oxidase. 4. Field experiments conducted over 3 years indicated that induction of these defensive proteins is associated with decreases in the abundance of all four naturally abundant herbivores, including insects in three feeding guilds, caterpillars, flea beetles, aphids, and thrips. Induced resistance killed early instars of noctuid caterpillars. Adult flea beetles strongly preferred control plants over induced plants, and this effect on host plant preference probably contributed to differences in the natural abundance of flea beetles. 5. The general nature of the effects observed in this study suggests that induced resistance will suppress many members of the herbivore community. By linking plant biochemistry, insect preference, performance, and abundance, tools can be developed to manipulate plant resistance sensibly and to predict its outcome under field conditions.  相似文献

A two-host–two-parasitoid model was constructed to assess the effects of the introduced larval parasitoid, the braconid Cotesia flavipes, on its primary target host, the invasive crambid Chilo partellus, and on secondary host species, in inter-specific competition with Cotesia sesamiae, the main native parasitoid species of stemborers in Kenya. The model assumed that: (1) there was no host discrimination by either parasitoid species; (2) Cotesia flavipes was the superior competitor that out-competed Cotesia sesamiae when the host was suitable; and (3) Cotesia flavipes could only develop in an unsuitable host if it had been previously parasitized by Cotesia sesamiae. Model parameters were estimated from surveys conducted in Kenya and from laboratory experiments. Different scenarios of host and parasitoid species composition and host suitability occurring in the different ecological zones in Kenya were analyzed. Results indicated that: (1) the coexistence of stemborer host populations are determined by their population growth rates, the degree of aggregation of the parasitoids and their searching efficiency; (2) in the regions where both the invasive and the predominant native host species were suitable to either parasitoid species, stemborer densities would be reduced to and controlled at low densities, and Cotesia flavipes would become the dominant parasitoid species. However, the extinction or predominance of the native stemborer species depends on the ratio of the growth rates of exotic and native stemborers and their relative searching efficiencies; and (3) if the native host species was acceptable but unsuitable to Cotesia flavipes, the parasite would not become established.  相似文献

Landscape context influences population dynamics of insects and impacts biological processes within communities. It was expected that anthropogenic disturbances of the rainforest landscape in DR Congo would lead to a decreased level of noctuid stemborer egg parasitism as a consequence of a decoupling between stemborers and their naturally occurring parasitoids through dispersal. To test this hypothesis, noctuid egg batches were collected in maize fields along an anthropogenic disturbance gradient to assess change in the rates of eggs parasitism and maize plant infestation with noctuid egg batches. Our results showed that, in contrast to what was initially expected, egg parasitism increased from less to highly disturbed landscape whereas maize infestation had an inverse tendency. Discovery efficiency and mean egg parasitism were 1.416 and 1.392 times higher, respectively, in the most than in the less disturbed landscape. The numbers of eggs and egg batches per 100 maize plants were 0.55 times and 0.532 times the value in the less disturbed landscape, suggesting a dilution of the stemborer population within a large habitat patch encompassing cultivated fields and the surrounding wild host plants. It was concluded that the presence of suitable host plants enhances noctuid stemborers egg parasitism in adjacent maize fields.  相似文献

DNA条形码技术在北京百花山地区夜蛾科物种鉴定中的应用   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
为了探讨DNA条形码技术在夜蛾物种鉴定中的可行性, 本研究利用条形码通用引物扩增了北京百花山地区43种夜蛾75个样本的线粒体细胞色素C氧化酶亚基I (mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I, COI)基因序列, 以Kimura双参数模型进行种内种间遗传距离分析、 使用邻接法(neighbor-joining, NJ)和最大简约法(maximum parsimony, MP)分别构建系统发育树, 并利用分子序列差异阈值对样本进行分子可操作分类单元(molecular defined operational taxonomic units, MOTU)划分。结果表明: 所有夜蛾种类通过系统发育树可以成功区分; 种内平均遗传距离(0.03%)远远小于种间平均遗传距离(11.29%); 采用较为保守的1%的序列差异阈值将75个夜蛾样本分为42个MOTU, 正确率为95%, 除了MOTU04包含2个物种外, 剩余41个MOTU与形态种呈现一一对应的关系。结果显示, 基于COI基因的DNA条形码对于本研究中所涉及的夜蛾具有较好的区分, 可以作为一种有效的工具在夜蛾科昆虫物种鉴定中进行应用。  相似文献

苏云金芽孢杆菌 (Bacillusthuringiensis,Bt)WY 197菌株是从 4 0 0多株野生型Bt菌中筛选分离的1株对甜菜夜蛾和棉铃虫都具有高效杀虫活性的菌株。初步比较WY -197菌株和HD 1的形态特征、生理生化特性和伴孢晶体蛋白 ,结果表明 ,WY -197属于H3a3b3c血清型 (subsp .kurstaki) ;伴孢晶体形态主要为大小不一的菱形、小正方形。SDS -PAGE电泳图谱表明主要由 135ku和 6 5ku两种蛋白成分组成 ,在菌株生长形态、发酵培养特征、生理生化特性方面与生产菌株HD-1差别不大。采用生物测定的方法 ,进一步鉴定比较它们对甜菜夜蛾初孵、二龄、三龄幼虫和棉铃虫的毒效差异。结果表明 ,BtWY 197菌株发酵液对甜菜夜蛾初孵、二龄、三龄幼虫的LC50 分别为 0 .31、0 .6 1、2 .5 7μL/mL ,其中对甜菜夜蛾初孵幼虫的毒效是对照菌HD 1发酵液的 7倍 ,表明BtWY 197菌株对甜菜夜蛾三龄以下幼虫具有高毒力。对棉铃虫的毒力效价为 30 0 0IU/ μL ,略低于HD- 1菌株。  相似文献

Applications of three concentrations of oil-free neem seed extracts (Azadirachta indica A. Juss; Meliaceae) to cabbage plants in cages did not deter oviposition by individuals of three species of noctuid moths,Trichoplusia ni, Peridroma saucia, andSpodoptera litura. The concentrations used corresponded to 10, 50, and 100 ppm of the main active ingredient, azadirachtin. The total number of eggs laid per female, female longevity, and median day of oviposition were not affected. Sprays of the neem oil-based insecticide Margosan-O R , and a 1% aqueous emulsion of a refined neem seed oil similarly had no effect on any of the parameters studied. However, a 1% crude oil emulsion significantly reduced the proportion of eggs laid byS. litura on treated plants. Our results suggest that literature reports of significant neem-based oviposition deterrence toS. litura are the result of compounds that are removed by higher levels of processing and thus not likely to be found in most commercial neem seed formulations. Sprays consisting of highly processed neem seed extracts, used at concentrations that provide larval control, are unlikely to be generally effective as oviposition deterrents to noctuid pests.  相似文献

A method was developed to determine in the same extract juvenile hormone and various types of ecdysteroids in precisely staged eggs and larvae of Trichoplusia ni. Ecdysteroids were tentatively identified on the basis of their retention time in ion suppression reversed-phase HPLC and their cross-reactivity with two relatively non-specific, complimentary antibodies, whereas juvenile hormone was identified using reversed-phase HPLC combined with Galleria bioassay. Freshly laid eggs contained low levels of immunoreactive ecdysteroids. Mid-polar ecdysteroids increased in the phase of segmentation (14-18 h) and 1st larval cuticle formation (36-44 h), when 20-hydroxyecdysone and 20,26-dihydroxyecdysone were found to be predominant. Only traces of ecdysone and 26-hydroxyecdysone were seen. Toward hatching ecdysteroids decreased and represented mainly compounds more polar than 20,26-dihydroxyecdysone. In larval development ecdysteroids were low at the beginning of the feeding phases, increased toward cessation of feeding, and reached highest levels 12-15 h before ecdysis. In feeding stages ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone were predominant, whereas in molting stages they were seen together with 20,26-dihydroxyecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysonoic acid. The juvenile hormone titer was very low in freshly laid eggs and was high (approximately 25 ng/g) in embryos at the stage of 1st larval cuticle formation and eye pigmentation. In eggs we tentatively identified juvenile hormones I and II, whereas in larval stages juvenile hormone II appeared to be the predominant or exclusive juvenile hormone. Its titer fluctuated rapidly and was high in early 1st-instar larvae and again before the molts into the 3rd, 4th, and 5th instar. Highest titers were reached concomitant with the peak in 20-hydroxyecdysone 12-15 h before ecdysis.  相似文献

Abstract. Laboratory studies investigated the development of teratocytes derived from the eggs of the parasitoid Meteous gyrator (Thun.) in its host, the tomato moth Lacanobia oleracea (L.). At hatching, each parasitoid egg produced an average of approximately 1000 teratocytes, but this number declined to approximately 400 during the course of parasitism. The teratocytes increased in size markedly, such that 7 days after egg hatch their mean diameter was approximately four times that of the cells immediately after dissociation. The haemolymph of parasitized hosts had reduced phenoloxidase activity, and teratocytes inhibited phenoloxidase activity when coincubated with plasma from nonparasitized hosts. The injection of teratocytes into nonparasitized fifth‐instar L. oleracea larvae suppressed growth and induced a supernumerary moult in some larvae. A number of parasitism‐specific proteins were detected in the haemolymph of parasitized hosts, and incubation of teratocytes in culture media indicated that these cells were a source of at least two of these proteins.  相似文献

吸果夜蛾的取食习性与头部内骨骼、肌肉和口器构造的特点有如下的关系:1.嗜食健果类型:幕骨强大,为着生肌肉提供较大的面积。头部肌肉发达。口器强角质化,端部具有适于穿刺果皮的附属物。2.兼食性类型:幕骨强大,头部肌肉发达程度常界于第一和第三类型之间。口器端部锐利,角质比较强。3.间接取食类型:幕骨不发达,着生肌肉的面积较小。头部肌肉较纤细。口器端部钝或膜质状,角质化程度弱。此外,下颚茎节外形及颊宽的特征,可以将嗜食健果类型的夜蛾与其他两类型的夜蛾区分开来。  相似文献
