Propulsive movements of the caudal oscillating flukes produce large forces that could induce equally large recoil forces at the cranial end of the animal, and, thus, affect stability. To examine these vertical oscillations, video analysis was used to measure the motions of the rostrum, pectoral flipper, caudal peduncle, and fluke tip for seven odontocete cetaceans: Delphinapterus leucas, Globicephala melaena, Lagenorhynchus obliquidens, Orcinus orca, Pseudorca crassidens, Stenella plagiodon , and Tursiops truncatus. Animals swam over a range of speeds of 1.4–7.30 m/sec. For each species, oscillatory frequency of the fluke tip increased linearly with swimming speed. Peak-to-peak amplitude at each body position remained constant with respect to swimming speed for all species. Mean peak-to-peak amplitude ranged from 0.02 to 0.06 body length at the rostrum and from 0.17 to 0.25 body length at the fluke tip. The phase relationships between the various body components remain constant with respect to swimming speed. Oscillations of the rostrum were nearly in phase with the fluke tip with phase differences out of—9.4°-33.0° of a cycle period of 360°. Pectoral flipper oscillations trailed fluke oscillations by 60.9°-123.4°. The lower range in amplitude at the rostrum compared to the fluke tip reflects increased resistance to vertical oscillation at the cranial end, which enhances the animal's stability. This resistance is likely due to both active and passive increased body stiffness, resistance on the flippers, phased movements of body components, and use of a lift-based propulsion. Collectively, these mechanisms stabilize the body of cetaceans during active swimming, which can reduce locomotor energy expenditure and reduce excessive motions of the head affecting sensory capabilities.  相似文献

Chicks and chick embryos provide a useful model system for the study of related to the development of motor behaviors. EMG and kinematic analyses of leg movements have been used to provide new data on the organization of embryonic motility. These data suggest that the circuitry needed to produce a basic, coordinated motor pattern is available early in development. This circuitry then appears to be retained throughout life. Evidence from analysis of EMG patterns and leg deafferentation studies suggest that the output of this basic circuit can be modulated by sensory input to produce the motor patterns of later behaviors, such as hatching and walking. If the same circuitry is present throughout life, then mechanisms for initiation and termination of particular behaviors must be available to ensure that specific behaviors are turned on and off at appropriate times. For example, hatching can be turned on by a specific sensory signal: proprioceptive signals from the bent neck. In addition to reviewing current research on the development of chick motor behaviors, methodological considerations and suggestions for future research are presented. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess the potential of employing a classification tool to objectively classify participants with clinically assessed movement faults (MFs) of the scapula. Six participants with a history of shoulder pain with MFs of the scapula and 12 healthy participants with no movement faults (NMFs) performed a flexion movement control test of the scapula, while scapular kinematic data were collected. Principal component scores and discrete kinematic variables were used as input into a classifier. Five out of the six participants with a history of pain were successfully classified as having scapular MFs with an accuracy of 72%. Variables related to the upward rotation of the scapula had the most influence on the classification. The results of the study demonstrate the potential of adopting a multivariate approach in objective classification of participants with altered scapular kinematics in pathological groups.  相似文献

Fluoroscopic image technique, using either a single image or dual images, has been widely applied to measure in vivo human knee joint kinematics. However, few studies have compared the advantages of using single and dual fluoroscopic images. Furthermore, due to the size limitation of the image intensifiers, it is possible that only a portion of the knee joint could be captured by the fluoroscopy during dynamic knee joint motion. In this paper, we presented a systematic evaluation of an automatic 2D–3D image matching method in reproducing spatial knee joint positions using either single or dual fluoroscopic image techniques. The data indicated that for the femur and tibia, their spatial positions could be determined with an accuracy and precision less than 0.2 mm in translation and less than 0.4° in orientation when dual fluoroscopic images were used. Using single fluoroscopic images, the method could produce satisfactory accuracy in joint positions in the imaging plane (in average up to 0.5 mm in translation and 1.3° in rotation), but large variations along the out-plane direction (in average up to 4.0 mm in translation and 2.2° in rotation). The precision of using single fluoroscopic images to determine the actual knee positions was worse than its accuracy obtained. The data also indicated that when using dual fluoroscopic image technique, if the knee joint outlines in one image were incomplete by 80%, the algorithm could still reproduce the joint positions with high precisions.  相似文献

Measurement of static alignment of articulating joints is of clinical benefit and can be determined using image-based registration. We propose a method that could potentially improve the outcome of image-based registration by using initial manual registration. Magnetic resonance images of two wrist specimens were acquired in the relaxed position and during simulated grasp. Transformations were determined from voxel-based image registration between the two volumes. The volumes were manually aligned to match as closely as possible before auto-registration, from which standard transformations were obtained. Then, translation/rotation perturbations were applied to the manual registration to obtain altered initial positions, from which altered auto-registration transformations were obtained. Models of the radiolunate joint were also constructed from the images to simulate joint contact mechanics. We compared the sensitivity of transformations (translations and rotations) and contact mechanics to altering the initial registration condition from the defined standard. We observed that with increasing perturbation, transformation errors appeared to increase and values for contact force and contact area appeared to decrease. Based on these preliminary findings, it appears that the final registration outcome is sensitive to the initial registration.  相似文献

Although season has been shown to affect bull sperm quality and fertility in some studies, the effect of season on seminal plasma proteins has not been examined. In the present study, seminal plasma proteins were analysed by Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography (FPLC), to separate the phosphorylcholine-binding proteins and heparin-binding proteins from the other proteins. Semen samples were collected from bulls in three seasons: winter, summer and the rainy season. Sperm quality was analysed by flow cytometry and computer assisted sperm analysis, and further aliquots of semen were used to prepare the seminal plasma for FPLC. Meteorological data were available from a location close to the bull station. There were slight differences in sperm kinematics between seasons, but other parameters of sperm quality were not different. Minor differences in the phosphorylcholine-binding proteins were detected according to season, being lower in summer than in winter or in the rainy season, although there were no changes in the heparin-binding proteins. Temperature, humidity and rainfall differed between winter and the rainy season, but no differences were observed between summer and the rainy season except in the temperature humidity index (THI). However, the THI was above the threshold indicative of heat stress in all seasons, which could explain why few seasonal differences in protein composition were detected in this study. Alternatively, the bulls could have been well-adapted to heat stress. In conclusion, there were only slight differences in bull sperm quality and seminal plasma proteins between seasons during this study.  相似文献

Biomechanical models of feeding mechanisms elucidate how animals capture food in the wild, which, in turn, expands our understanding of their fundamental trophic niche. However, little attention has been given to modeling the protrusible upper jaw apparatus that characterizes many teleost species. We expanded existing biomechanical models to include upper jaw forces using a generalist butterflyfish, Chaetodon trichrous (Chaetodontidae) that produces substantial upper jaw protrusion when feeding on midwater and benthic prey. Laboratory feeding trials for C. trichrous were recorded using high-speed digital imaging; from these sequences we quantified feeding performance parameters to use as inputs for the biomechanical model. According to the model outputs, the upper jaw makes a substantial contribution to the overall forces produced during mouth closing in C. trichrous. Thus, biomechanical models that only consider lower jaw closing forces will underestimate total bite force for this and likely other teleost species. We also quantified and subsequently modeled feeding events for C. trichrous consuming prey from the water column versus picking attached prey from the substrate to investigate whether there is a functional trade-off between prey capture modes. We found that individuals of C. trichrous alter their feeding behavior when consuming different prey types by changing the timing and magnitude of upper and lower jaw movements and that this behavioral modification will affect the forces produced by the jaws during prey capture by dynamically altering the lever mechanics of the jaws. In fact, the slower, lower magnitude movements produced during picking-based prey capture should produce a more forceful bite, which will facilitate feeding on benthic attached prey items, such as corals. Similarities between butterflyfishes and other teleost lineages that also employ picking-based prey capture suggest that a suite of key behavioral and morphological innovations enhances feeding success for benthic attached prey items.  相似文献

Estimating the main axis of rotation (AoR) of a human joint represents an important issue in biomechanics. This study compared three formal methods used to estimate functional AoR, namely a cylindrical fitting method, a mean helical axis transformation, and a symmetrical axis approach. These methods were tested on 106 subjects undergoing navigated total knee arthroplasty. AoR orientation in 3D and in the frontal and coronal planes provided by each method was compared to the transepicondylar axis direction. Although all the methods resulted effective, significant differences were identified among them, relatively to the orientation in 3D and in the frontal plane projection. This was probably due to the presence of secondary rotations during the first degrees of knee flexion.  相似文献

The use of exoskeletons as an aid for people with musculoskeletal disorder is the subject to an increasing interest in the research community. These devices are expected to meet the specific needs of users, such as children with cerebral palsy (CP) who are considered a significant population in pediatric rehabilitation. Although these exoskeletons should be designed to ease the movement of people with physical shortcoming, their design is generally based on data obtained from healthy adults, which leads to oversized components that are inadequate to the targeted users. Consequently, the objective of this study is to custom-size the lower limb exoskeleton actuators based on dynamic modeling of the human body for children with CP on the basis of hip, knee, and ankle joint kinematics and dynamics of human body during gait. For this purpose, a multibody modeling of the human body of 3 typically developed children (TD) and 3 children with CP is used. The results show significant differences in gait patterns especially in knee and ankle with respectively 0.39 and ?0.33 (Nm/kg) maximum torque differences between TD children and children with CP. This study provides the recommendations to support the design of actuators to normalize the movement of children with CP.  相似文献

This paper presents a method of monocular human motion tracking for estimation of hurdle clearance kinematic parameters. The analysis involved 10 image sequences of five hurdlers at various training levels. Recording of the sequences was carried out under simulated starting conditions of a 110 m hurdle race. The parameters were estimated using the particle swarm optimization algorithm and they are based on analysis of the images recorded with a 100 Hz camera. The proposed method does not involve using any special clothes, markers, inertial sensors, etc. As the quality criteria, the mean absolute error and mean relative error were used. The level of computed errors justifies the use of this method to estimate hurdle clearance parameters.  相似文献
