The principles of island biogeography are rarely applied to the animal assemblages of Amazonian river islands. Here, we compare bird assemblages of Amazonian river islands with a variety of mainland habitats. We also examine how bird species diversity and composition are related to island physical attributes. Birds were sampled with mist nets and qualitative censuses on 11 river islands and 24 mainland sites on the lower reaches of the Rio Negro in the Brazilian Amazon. Island bird assemblages were characterized by lower species richness and a higher abundance of a few dominant species. Additionally, the species composition of the islands was distinct from that of the mainland, including the nearby floodplain habitats. The number of bird species increased with island size and habitat diversity, and decreased with degree of isolation. In addition, small islands tended to harbor an impoverished subset of the species present on larger ones. Bird species diversity and composition on Amazonian river islands are likely influenced by the ecological succession and historical events affecting island formation. Considering their small total area across the Amazon basin, these insular fluvial communities could be disproportionately threatened by river channel disturbances related to climate change or hydroelectric dam development. People dwelling in different cities of the Potohar region, Pakistan, are mostly dependent on surface water for drinking and domestic use. In an attempt to make available potable, safe water, filtration plants were constructed along with dams in the Potohar region. Water samples from these filtration plants were collected and analyzed for total and faecal coliform bacteria as well as for total viable count. Results showed that bacterial indicators of faecal contamination were numerous and significantly greater than World Health Organization recommended guidelines. Accordingly, antibacterial activity of methanolic and aqueous extracts of different parts of Solanum surrattense were assessed in vitro against waterborne pathogens. Fruits exhibited more antibacterial activities at incubation at 37°C than shoots and roots, which showed lowest Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and zones of inhibition. These results suggest that plants offer a great potential for purification of drinking water that needs to be explored further because fruit extract of the aforementioned plant can be of practical use against waterborne pathogens.  相似文献

During the design and the execution of the Delta project, carried out after the storm flood of 1953 in the SW Netherlands, the importance of the long-term effects of morphological and ecological developments driven by tides and currents, have been underestimated. Due to these processes the height of the dams will have to be increased for centuries to come, because the land behind the levees cannot grow in elevation anymore with the rising of the sea. Maintenance of the civil-engineering structures, and mitigating their unpredictable impacts on ecosystems, involve very high recurrent costs. The chance of flooding is reduced, but the potential damage after a storm flood is enlarged: seawalls and dykes provide a false sense of safety against flooding. Changes in the role of agricultural use in the European context, offer an opportunity to abandon arable fields and to retrocede them to the sea in order to absorb tidal energy and to allow the land to rise concomitant with the sea. A cost-benefit analysis of this approach should assess the direct and indirect economic values, as well as the non-use (intrinsic) values, whereby public engagement in management questions, facilitates decision-making processes. Reversible and resilient economic measures within the limits of the natural processes are preferable. A future, speculative perspective is an urbanised landscape, where people and investments are located in safe places, e.g. on floating, or sea-encircled artificial dwelling-mounds, surrounded by a landscape that is ruled by the forces of nature. New approaches such as developed in the Westerschelde offer flexible solutions to flooding problems, and are worth a broader evaluation. A worldwide platform of experts should be organised to study the future management of estuaries and deltas, and to develop and exchange new ideas and techniques.  相似文献

A fundamental challenge in understanding the global nitrogen cycle is the quantification of denitrification on large heterogeneous landscapes. Because floodplains are important sites for denitrification and nitrogen retention, we developed a generalized floodplain biogeochemical model to determine whether dams and flood‐control levees affect floodplain denitrification by altering floodplain inundation. We combined a statistical model of floodplain topography with a model of hydrology and nitrogen biogeochemistry to simulate floods of different magnitude. The model predicted substantial decreases in NO3‐N processing on floodplains whose overbank floods have been altered by levees and upstream dams. Our simulations suggest that dams may reduce nitrate processing more than setback levees. Levees increased areal floodplain denitrification rates, but this effect was offset by a reduction in the area inundated. Scenarios that involved a levee also resulted in more variability in N processing among replicate floodplains. Nitrate loss occurred rapidly and completely in our model floodplains. As a consequence, total flood volume and the initial mass of nitrate reaching a floodplain may provide reasonable estimates of total N processing on floodplains during floods. This finding suggests that quantifying the impact of dams and levees on floodplain denitrification may be possible using recent advances in remote sensing of floodplain topography and flood stage. Furthermore, when considering flooding over the long‐term, the cumulative N processed by frequent smaller floods was estimated to be quite large relative to that processed by larger, less frequent floods. Our results suggest that floodplain denitrification may be greatly influenced by the pervasive anthropogenic flood‐control measures that currently exist on most majors river floodplains throughout the world, and may have the potential to be impacted by future changes in flood probabilities that will likely occur as a result of climate shifts.  相似文献

1. Sites immediately below seven dams in Victoria and 12 in southern New South Wales (NSW) were sampled for macroinvertebrates using rapid bioassessment techniques. Specimens were identified to the lowest taxonomic level. The dams had different operating and discharge regimes and thus potentially different downstream effects on this fauna.
2. The AUStralian RIVer Assessment Scheme (AUSRIVAS) predictive models for macroinvertebrate composition were applied to the families and genera observed at Victorian sites and to the families only at the NSW sites. Lists of predicted taxa, their probabilities of occurrence and ratios of observed to expected taxa (O/E scores) were obtained from these models.
3. The mean O/E score for Victoria was 0.46 at the genus level and 0.63 at the family level; for NSW the mean score at the family level was 0.62. There was no significant difference between family level scores for the two states. Thus about 40% of expected families were missing at all sites. Family level scores were highly correlated ( r =0.84–0.86, P  < 0.001) with numbers of families or species at a site.
4. There was no correlation between family O/E scores (or family and species richness) and the degree to which current discharge levels below a dam differ from the natural patterns. Thus increased hydrological deviation did not result in greater biological degradation. In addition, there was no association between these biological characteristics and whether dams released surface or bottom water.
5. All the dams seemed to cause much the same disruption to the fauna. Of the families predicted to have widespread occurrence, 9–12 were found at most sites (tolerant taxa), while a larger number (14–24) were missing (intolerant taxa). The limited recolonisation below dams may well be because of the fact that dams act as barriers to drift, the most prominent route for invertebrate colonists.  相似文献

1. Freshwater fish and crayfish communities were surveyed along elevational gradients in streams radiating from Mount Taranaki, New Zealand. Six of the 38 streams surveyed had dams or weirs and 32 of the 85 sites were above these barriers. 2. Of the 15 fish and one crayfish species captured, 14 were native. The number of species declined with increasing elevation and distance from the sea. Species richness was also lower above dams even when effects of elevation and distance from the sea were accounted for. 3. Linear regression models using sites without dams were constructed to predict the effect of elevation on fish and crayfish community structure and to allow the effect of dams to be evaluated. The number of species predicted by these models was consistently higher than the number of species found at the above-dam sites. 4. Four fish community groups were classified using two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN). One high elevation group of sites consisted of short steep streams on the west side of the mountain and a second contained longer, lower gradient streams on the east side. The other two groups (3 and 4) consisted of mid-elevation sites and low-elevation sites, respectively. 5. Discriminant analysis was used to predict biotic group membership using the environmental data. Overall, 80% of sites were classified correctly. Correlation of environmental variables with axis scores in the canonical variate analysis revealed that distance from the sea, site elevation and presence of dams were most strongly associated with fish distribution patterns.  相似文献

1. Many aspects of the flow regime influence the structure of stream communities, among which the minimum discharge left in rivers has received particular attention. However, instream habitat models predicting the ecological impacts of discharge management often lack biological validation and spatial generality, particularly for large rivers with many fish species. 2. The minimum flow at Pierre‐Bénite, a reach of the Rhône river bypassed by artificial channels, was increased from 10 to 100 m3 s?1 in August 2000 (natural mean discharge 1030 m3 s?1), resulting in a fivefold increase in average velocity at minimum flow. Fish were electrofished in several habitat units on 12 surveys between 1995 and 2004. 3. Principal components analysis revealed a significant change in the relative abundance of fish species. The relative abundance of species preferring fast‐flowing and/or deep microhabitats increased from two‐ to fourfold after minimum flow increase. A change in community structure confirmed independent quantitative predictions of an instream habitat model. This change was significantly linked to minimum flow increase, but not to any other environmental variables describing high flows or temperature at key periods of fish life cycle. The rapidity of the fish response compared with the lifespan of individual species can be explained by a differential response of specific size classes. 4. The fish community at Pierre‐Bénite is in a transitional stage and only continued monitoring will indicate if the observed shift in community structure is perennial. We expect that our case study will be compared with other predictive tests of the impacts of flow restoration in large rivers, in the Rhône catchment and elsewhere.  相似文献

Migratory bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) historically spawned in tributaries of the Clark Fork River, Montana and inhabited Lake Pend Oreille as subadult and adult fish. However, in 1952 Cabinet Gorge Dam was constructed without fish passage facilities disrupting the connectivity of this system. Since the construction of this dam, bull trout populations in upstream tributaries have been in decline. Each year adult bull trout return to the base of Cabinet Gorge Dam when most migratory bull trout begin their spawning migration. However, the origin of these fish is uncertain. We used eight microsatellite loci to compare bull trout collected at the base of Cabinet Gorge Dam to fish sampled from both above and further downstream from the dam. Our data indicate that Cabinet Gorge bull trout are most likely individuals that hatched in above-dam tributaries, reared in Lake Pend Oreille, and could not return to their natal tributaries to spawn. This suggests that the risk of outbreeding depression associated with passing adults over dams in the Clark Fork system is minimal compared to the potential genetic and demographic benefits to populations located above the dams.  相似文献

The yellow lampmussel (Lampsilis cariosa) is a rare unionid species in need of conservation, as it is declining throughout most of its Atlantic slope range in North America. Because freshwater mussels rely on a fish host for dispersal of their larvae, barriers to the movement of hosts, such as habitat fragmentation by dams, may indirectly affect population genetic structure. We used microsatellite loci to assess genetic variation for L. cariosa within and among three river drainages in the northern part of its range, which emerged from glaciation only ∼ ∼8–10 kya. Despite this relatively recent emergence, significant differences were observed among populations both within and among drainages, possibly because low effective population sizes meant that populations of these mussels achieved drift-migration equilibrium rapidly following glaciation. L. cariosa individuals could be assigned to their own drainages with 89.3% accuracy. Among-population differences were modest, however, in comparison to differences observed in another study of rare mussels south of the recently glaciated region. L. cariosa populations exhibited significant isolation by distance, but there was no additional variation explained by the number, size, or age of intervening dams. An understanding of mussel population genetic structure provides information, useful for conservation planning, on patterns of isolation and connectivity among populations.  相似文献
