Mated females of the wolf spider Schizocosa malitiosa are frequently refractory to further copulations. Copulation consists of two successive behavioural patterns: pattern I (PI) and pattern II (PII). During PI males make multiple consecutive insertions with each palp, and in PII males alternate the use of palps after each insertion until dismounting. As both patterns are inseminatory, another function – such as generating female reluctance – is suggested for this complex behaviour. Here we test experimentally whether female spiders mated only with PI, or only with PII, are reluctant to re-mate. Each copulating male was interrupted immediately after the end of PI (phase A), and the same male was instantly exposed to a second virgin female. After re-mounting, the male initially performed a brief recapitulation of PI followed by PII (both together considered as phase B). For testing female sexual reluctance, females were exposed to a second male 3 days after the partial mating, but whenever the mounting occurred it was interrupted. Females were raised and progeny was counted. Phase-A-mated females were more reluctant to re-mating than phase-B-mated females, but their respective progeny was similar. We suggest that female reluctance is caused by sperm-associated substances transferred during PI.  相似文献

Quality differences between offspring sired by the social and by an extra-pair partner are usually assumed to have a genetic basis, reflecting genetic benefits of female extra-pair mate choice. In the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata), we identified a colour ornament that is under sexual selection and appears to have a heritable basis. Hence, by engaging in extra-pair copulations with highly ornamented males, females could, in theory, obtain genes for increased offspring attractiveness. Indeed, sons sired by extra-pair partners had larger ornaments, seemingly supporting the genetic benefit hypothesis. Yet, when comparing ornament size of the social and extra-pair partners, there was no difference. Hence, the observed differences most likely had an environmental basis, mediated, for example, via differential maternal investment of resources into the eggs fertilized by extra-pair and social partners. Such maternal effects may (at least partly) be mediated by egg size, which we found to be associated with mean ornament expression in sons. Our results are consistent with the idea that maternal effects can shape sexual selection by altering the genotype-phenotype relationship for ornamentation. They also caution against automatically attributing greater offspring attractiveness or viability to an extra-pair mate's superior genetic quality, as without controlling for differential maternal investment we may significantly overestimate the role of genetic benefits in the evolution of extra-pair mating behaviour.  相似文献

Broods of young merlins were compared with the adults in attendance at their nest by DNA fingerprinting. No offspring were found that mismatched genetically suggesting that intraspecific brood parasitism and extrapair fertilization are very rare in this population. In sexually promiscuous animals, females may benefit by nestingclose to the edge of their partner's territory to facilitateextrapair copulations. In the present study, we describe theextrapair mating system of black-capped chickadees, Poecileatricapillus, and test whether nest locations are influencedby conspecific attraction to extrapair partners. We conducteda spatial analysis of female mating strategies by using microsatellitepaternity analysis in conjunction with geographic informationsystem (GIS) analysis of nest and territory locations. Extrapairoffspring comprised 52 of 351 offspring (14.8%) and were presentin 19 of 57 broods (33.3%). Females paired to males with lowdominance status in the previous winter's flock hierarchy weremore likely to engage in a mixed reproductive strategy thanwere females paired to males with high dominance status. Femaleshad extrapair copulations and extrapair fertilizations withhigh-ranking males more often than with low-ranking males. Notall extrapair copulations resulted in extrapair fertilizations.Females constructed their nests within 16.8 ± 1.0 m ofthe edge of their partner's territory, significantly closerto the edge of their nearest neighbor's territory than to thecenter of their own partner's territory. Extrapair males usuallyshared territory boundaries with cuckolded males. Females pairedto low-ranking males constructed nests near the territory edgesof neighboring high-ranking males. However, females did nothave extrapair copulations with the neighbor nearest to theirnest or even with the high-ranking neighbor nearest to theirnest. We conclude that conspecific attraction to neighbors mayinfluence nesting location in black-capped chickadees; however,it does not operate by facilitating extrapair copulations.  相似文献

Females that are socially bonded to a single male, either in a social monogamy or in a social polygyny, are often sexually polyandrous. Extrapair copulations (EPC) have often been suggested or rejected, on both empirical and theoretical grounds, as an important mechanism that enables females to avoid fertility risks in case their socially bonded male is infertile. Here, we explore this possibility in two steps. First, we present a mathematical model that assumes that females have no precopulatory information about male fertility, and shows that a female EPC strategy increases female reproductive success only if certain specific conditions are upheld in the nature of male infertility. In particular, these conditions require both (i) that fertile sperm precedence (FSP) is absent or incomplete within ejaculates of the same male (i.e. that an infertile male is, at least partly, truly infertile), and (ii) the existence of FSP among ejaculates of different males (such that infertile spermatozoa of the infertile male are at a disadvantage when competing against spermatozoa of a fertile male). Second, to evaluate their potential role in the evolution of female EPC, we review the abundance and FSP patterns of the different male infertility types. The conclusion is drawn that some common infertility types, such as poor sperm count or motility, contribute to the evolution of female EPC, whereas other common infertility types, such as sperm depletion or allocation in a social monogamy (but not in a social polygyny), and in particular male driven polyspermy, do not. Also, a deeper look at the arms race between sperm fertilization efficiency and female barriers to sperm may answer the non‐trivial question: “why are some types of infertility so common?”  相似文献

为了扩大朱鹮(Nipponia nippon)种群的数量和分布区,于2018年7月从洋县引进20只朱鹮在北戴河建立了朱鹮野化种群。2020年繁殖期,北戴河共有22只朱鹮,其中成年朱鹮17只,雌雄性比为1.1;实际繁殖密度为37.8只/hm2;人工巢的密度为40.0巢/hm2,人工巢筐内径为50 cm。2020年繁殖期,北戴河朱鹮共配对8对,其中6对繁殖成功,营巢成功率为75%;共产卵33枚,平均窝卵数为(4.1±1.8)枚;出壳18只,孵化率54.5%;出飞13只,出飞率72.2%,繁殖成功率为39.4%,繁殖生产力为2.2±1.2。与洋县饲养种群相比,北戴河种群首枚卵的产卵时间晚17 d,与两地温差相吻合。北戴河朱鹮的窝卵数显著高于洋县种群,这可能是由种内巢寄生所致。监控录像表明,北戴河1巢朱鹮的窝卵数高达6枚,超过野生种群平均窝卵数(2或3枚)的2倍,推测发生了种内巢寄生行为。此外,还观察到8号巢朱鹮同时发生了婚外配和种内巢寄生行为,婚外配雌鸟将卵产在该雄鸟的巢中,使得窝卵数高达7枚。此后在该巢中发现3只朱鹮轮流孵卵,以及2只雌性朱鹮并排孵于同一巢中的异常情况。北戴河朱鹮的种内巢寄生行为可能是因网笼内人工巢址密度较高但隐蔽性较低所致,而婚外配行为可能与种群密度和繁殖密度过高有关。本文有关朱鹮异常繁殖行为的研究结果可为野化网笼内人工巢筐的设置和野化种源的选择提供参考,并提示我们进一步关注朱鹮在环境压力下的表型可塑性和生态适应能力。  相似文献

In species pairs able to produce fertile hybrids, the amount of introgression can be limited by the frequency of interspecific copulations. We investigated the frequency of interspecific copulations between Kviparus ater and V. contectus and the proportion of hybrid offspring of V. ater females in natural populations in northern Italy. Although there was significant assortative mating, the frequency of interspecific copulations was substantial. At sites where V. contectus was rare, 5.9% of all matings, and up to 73% of matings in which V. contectus was involved, were interspecific. At sites where both species were abundant 14.8% of all matings were interspecific. Male-male matings occurred in approximately 3% of copulations. In 1993, 12 out of 325 V. ater females collected from 10 sympatric populations and held in isolation for two to five months gave birth to 25 hybrid offspring, out of a total of 2548 offspring produced by all females. The proportion of hybrid offspring (ranging from 0 to 2.3% depending on the site) was positively related to the proportion of V. contectus in the population. Since interspecific copulations are frequent and hybrid offspring are produced in nature, we conclude that assortative mating is not an effective isolating mechanism between V. ater and V. contectus.  相似文献

We examined the role of extrapair fertilizations (EPFs) in themating system of the hooded warbler (Wilsonia citrina), a monogamoussongbird. DNA fingerprinting revealed that 8 of 17 (47%) femaleshad extrapair young in their first or second brood, and 23 of78 (29%) nestlings were the result of EPFs. Extrapair youngwere signifkandy more likely to occur in first broods than insecond broods. The proportion of EPFs within a brood was stronglybirnodal among broods: nests had 50% or more extrapair youngor none. In seven of eight broods where EPFs occurred, an adjacentmale neighbor was identified as the actual father. Male-likecoloration in females did not reduce the likelihood of havingextrapair young. Females with extrapair young did not receiveless parental care from their mates. All males who obtainedEPFs were mated to fertile females or were feeding offspringat the time they most likely mated with the extrapair female.Our results are consistent with the female control hypothesis,which predicts that females benefit from extrapair copulations(EPCs) and have some control over which males, if any, obtainEPCs. However, we could not reject the alternative hypothesisthat some male neighbors are particularly dominant and aggressiveduring EPC attempts, so females accept these EPCs to minimizecosts.  相似文献

Sexual selection can act through variation in the number of social mates obtained, variation in mate quality, or variation in success at obtaining extra-pair fertilizations. Because within-pair fertilizations (WPF) and extra-pair fertilizations (EPF) are alternate routes of reproduction, they are additive, rather than multiplicative, components of fitness. We present a method for partitioning total variance in reproductive success (a measure of the opportunity for selection) when fitness components are both additive and multiplicative and use it to partition the variance into components that correspond to each mechanism of sexual selection. Computer simulations show that extra-pair fertilizations can either increase or decrease total variance, depending on the covariance between within-pair and extra-pair success. Simulations also suggest that for socially monogamous species, extra-pair fertilizations have a greater effect than variation in mate quality or pairing status on the opportunity for selection. Application of our model to data gathered for a population of red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) indicates that most of the variance in male reproductive success was attributable to within-pair sources of variance. Nevertheless, extra-pair copulations increased the opportunity for selection because males varied both in the proportion of their social young that they sired and in the number of extra-pair mates that they obtained. Furthermore, large and positive covariances existed between the number of extra-pair mates a male obtained and both social pairing success and within-pair paternity, indicating that, in this population, males preferred as social mates also were preferred as extra-pair mates.  相似文献

Summary During the last decade, the mating systems of many bird species have been analysed using molecular genetic methods. Most of these studies were performed on Passeriformes while Non-Passeriformes were rarely investigated. To fill this gap, we analysed blood samples of 24 Common Gull (Larus canus) families from two Polish colonies using DNA fingerprinting. A total of 55 of 56 chicks was unequivocally assigned to their genetic parents. Only two of these chicks (3.6%) from two different broods resulted from extra-pair copulations, the other 53 could be attributed to the putative parents; i.e., intraspecific brood parasitism was not observed. With respect to the number of breeding pairs investigated, the frequency of extra-pair paternity amounted to 8.3%. Thus, extra-pair paternity is relatively infrequent compared to other bird species. This result is surprising because the percentage of observed extra-pair copulations (i.e., mainly forced copulations in Common Gulls) in relation to the absolute number of copulations was 15.7% in the colonies studied. A possible reason for the disproportionate number of forced copulations and the lower percentage of resulting extra-pair young may include different mechanisms for paternity control by the pair males and/or by females.
Niedriger Anteil von Vaterschaften außerhalb des Paarbundes bei Sturmmöwen (Larus canus)
Zusammenfassung In den letzten 10 Jahren wurde das Paarungssystem vieler Vogelarten auch mit Hilfe molekulargenetischer Methoden näher untersucht. Dabei standen vor allem verschiedene Singvogelarten im Vordergrund, während Nicht-Singvogelarten kaum berücksichtigt wurden. Die vorliegende Untersuchung an Sturmmöwen (Larus canus) soll helfen diese Lücke zu schließen. Hierzu wurden die Blutproben von 24 Sturmmöwenfamilien zweier polnischer Kolonien mit Hilfe des genetischen Fingerabdruckverfahrens untersucht. Bei 55 der 56 untersuchten Küken konnten eindeutige Aussagen zur Elternschaft gemacht werden. Nur zwei Küken (3,6%) aus zwei unterschiedlichen Bruten gingen auf Kopulationen außerhalb des Paarbundes zurück, die restlichen 53 stammten von den sozialen Eltern ab, d. h. Fälle von innerartlichem Brutparasitismus konnten nicht nachgewiesen werden. In bezug auf den prozentualen Anteil an Brutpaaren, deren Bruten Jungtiere enthielten, die das Resultat von Kopulationen außerhalb des Paarbundes waren, ergab sich ein Wert von 8,3%. Dieser Wert ist im Vergleich mit anderen Vogelarten sehr niedrig. Der geringe Anteil an Vaterschaften außerhalb des Paarbundes verwundert, da der Anteil von Kopulationen außerhalb des Paarbundes, die von den Männchen bei Sturmmöwen meist gewaltsam erzwungen werden, im Vergleich zur Gesamtzahl beobachteter Kopulationen in den untersuchten Kolonien 15,7% betrug und damit deutlich höher lag, als dies auf der Basis der Ergebnisse der DNA-Fingerprinting Untersuchungen zu erwarten gewesen wäre. Mögliche Gründe für die Diskrepanz zwischen dem Anteil der erzwungenen Kopulationen außerhalb des Paarbundes und dem Anteil der resultierenden Küken sind verschiedene Mechanismen der Vaterschaftskontrolle durch die Paarmännchen und/oder durch die Weibchen.
