Human plague risks (Yersinia pestis infection) are greatest when epizootics cause high mortality among this bacterium's natural rodent hosts. Therefore, health departments in plague‐endemic areas commonly establish animal‐based surveillance programs to monitor Y. pestis infection among plague hosts and vectors. The primary objectives of our study were to determine whether passive animal‐based plague surveillance samples collected in Colorado from 1991 to 2005 were sampled from high human plague risk areas and whether these samples provided information useful for predicting human plague case locations. By comparing locations of plague‐positive animal samples with a previously constructed GIS‐based plague risk model, we determined that the majority of plague‐positive Gunnison's prairie dogs (100%) and non‐prairie dog sciurids (85.82%), and moderately high percentages of sigmodontine rodents (71.4%), domestic cats (69.3%), coyotes (62.9%), and domestic dogs (62.5%) were recovered within 1 km of the nearest area posing high peridomestic risk to humans. In contrast, the majority of white‐tailed prairie dog (66.7%), leporid (cottontailed and jack rabbits) (71.4%), and black‐tailed prairie dog (93.0%) samples originated more than 1 km from the nearest human risk habitat. Plague‐positive animals or their fleas were rarely (one of 19 cases) collected within 2 km of a case exposure site during the 24 months preceding the dates of illness onset for these cases. Low spatial accuracy for identifying epizootic activity prior to human plague cases suggested that other mammalian species or their fleas are likely more important sources of human infection in high plague risk areas. To address this issue, epidemiological observations and multi‐locus variable number tandem repeat analyses (MLVA) were used to preliminarily identify chipmunks as an under‐sampled, but potentially important, species for human plague risk in Colorado.  相似文献

In mammals, species with highly male-biased sexual size dimorphismtend to have high variance in male reproductive success. However, little information is available on patterns of sexual selection, variation in male and female reproductive success, and bodysize and mating success in species with female-biased size dimorphism. We used parentage data from microsatellite DNA loci to examinethese issues in the yellow-pine chipmunk (Tamias amoenus), asmall ground squirrel with female-biased sexual size dimorphism.Chipmunks were monitored over 3 years in the Kananaskis Valley,Alberta, Canada. We found evidence of high levels of multiplepaternity within litters. Variation in male and female reproductivesuccess was equal, and the opportunity for sexual selectionwas only marginally higher in males than females. Male and femalereproductive success both depended on mating success. We foundno evidence that the number of genetic mates a male had dependedon body size. Our results are consistent with a promiscuousmating system in which males and female mate with multiple partners.Low variation in male reproductive success may be a generalfeature of mammalian species in which females are larger thanmales.  相似文献

The abiotic environment often influences the ways in which animalsinteract. By affecting the cues associated with buried seeds, the type of substrate used by seed-caching rodents may alterthe relative probabilities of cache pilferage and cache retrieval. We predicted that, after a wildfire, the presence of ash wouldimpair rodents' ability to smell pine seeds on the forest floor. In a laboratory experiment, we compared the foraging success, caching frequency, and cache recovery of chipmunks (six Tamiasamoenus and six T. quadrimaculatus) in ash versus sand substrates.Initial results supported our hypothesis: chipmunks found only2.3% of 108 caches of Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi) seeds thatwe buried in ash but found 98% of caches in sand. However, chipmunksmade as many or more of their own caches in ash compared withsand (48% for T. amoenus, 73% for T. quadrimaculatus.) Whenforaging for seeds cached in ash by themselves and by otherindividuals, they found significantly higher proportions oftheir own caches (62%) than of caches made by others (25%).However, when foraging in sand, they found high proportionsboth of their own caches and those of others (86 versus 81%).These results suggest that olfaction is less effective in ashthan in sand, that spatial memory enables chipmunks to recovertheir own caches in ash, and that caching in ash may allow animalsto avoid pilferage of stored food. As chipmunks are importantdispersers of seeds, changes in their foraging patterns or competitiveinteractions after fire could significantly affect pine regeneration.  相似文献

Predicting how individual taxa will respond to climatic change is challenging, in part because the impacts of environmental conditions can vary markedly, even among closely related species. Studies of chipmunks (Tamias spp.) in Yosemite National Park provide an important opportunity to explore the reasons for this variation in response. While the alpine chipmunk (T. alpinus) has undergone a significant elevational range contraction over the past century, the congeneric and partially sympatric lodgepole chipmunk (T. speciosus) has not experienced an elevational range shift during this period. As a first step toward identifying the factors underlying this difference in response, we examined evidence for dietary changes and changes in cranial morphology in these species over the past century. Stable isotope analyses of fur samples from modern and historical museum specimens of these species collected at the same localities indicated that signatures of dietary change were more pronounced in T. alpinus, although diet breadth did not differ consistently between the study species. Morphometric analyses of crania from these specimens revealed significant changes in cranial shape for T. alpinus, with less pronounced changes in shape for T. speciosus; evidence of selection on skull morphology was detected for T. alpinus, but not for T. speciosus. These results are consistent with growing evidence that T. alpinus is generally more responsive to environmental change than T. speciosus, but emphasize the complex and often geographically variable nature of such responses. Accordingly, future studies that make use of the taxonomically and spatially integrative approach employed here may prove particularly informative regarding relationships between environmental conditions, range changes, and patterns of phenotypic variation.  相似文献

Factors affecting reproduction in captive Asian chipmunks, Tamias sibiricus, were examined by means of a survey of chipmunk breeders in Great Britain. Sixteen breeders were asked about the conditions under which their chipmunks were kept and their success in breeding them. Results covered 205 female-years of pairing. Breeding was promoted by large cage size and early weaning of young, and inhibited by the presence of other rodent species nearby and by extended photoperiod. A diet of seeds and nuts, with some fresh fruits and vegetables, appeared to be adequate for breeding. Breeding occurred in 80–91& of female-years when neither extra lighting nor other rodents were present, irrespective of cage size. Weaning age affected the occurrence of second litters in a year. Second litters were born less often (0–13&) of breeding (female-years) if young of the first litter remained with the mother 8 weeks or longer. Second litters were more frequent (14–45& of breeding female-years) if first litters were removed by 6.5 weeks of age, and this frequency increased with cage size. Litter size also increased with cage size (means ranged from 3 to 7). Overall breeding success increased with cage size and decreased with the presence of other rodents. In most colonies without other rodents near, mean success rate ranged from 3.1 to 8.5 young/female-year. In colonies with other rodents present mean success rate varied from 0 to 3.3 young/female-year. It is suggested that the mechanisms that control population size in the wild also act to inhibit or promote breeding in captivity.  相似文献

Sexual size dimorphism is ultimately the result of independent, sex-specific selection on body size. In mammals, male-biased sexual size dimorphism is the predominant pattern, and it is usually attributed to the polygynous mating system prevalent in most mammals. This sole explanation is unsatisfying because selection acts on both sexes simultaneously, therefore any explanation of sexual size dimorphism should explain why one sex is relatively large and the other is small. Using mark-recapture techniques and DNA microsatellite loci to assign parentage, we examined sex-specific patterns of annual reproductive success and survival in the yellow-pine chipmunk (Tamias amoenus), a small mammal with female-biased sexual size dimorphism, to test the hypothesis that the dimorphism was related to sex differences in the relationship between body size and fitness. Chipmunks were monitored and body size components measured over three years in the Kananaskis Valley, Alberta, Canada. Male reproductive success was independent of body size perhaps due to trade-offs in body size associated with behavioral components of male mating success: dominance and running speed. Male survival was consistent with stabilizing selection for overall body size and body size components. The relationship between reproductive success and female body size fluctuated. In two of three years the relationship was positive, whereas in one year the relationship was negative. This may have been the result of differences in environmental conditions among years. Large females require more energy to maintain their soma than small females and may be unable to maintain lactation in the face of challenging environmental conditions. Female survival was positively related to body size, with little evidence for stabilizing selection. Sex differences in the relationship between body size and fitness (reproductive success and survival) were the result of different processes, but were ultimately consistent with female-biased sexual size dimorphism evident in this species.  相似文献

We measured plasma levels of testosterone, corticosterone, and cortisol in free-living male yellow-pine chipmunks to demonstrate the patterns of seasonal variation and to assess the effects of capture and handling on hormone levels. We achieved the latter by modifying our standard trapping technique (blood samples collected within 1–3 h of capture) to obtain blood samples that allowed measurement of hormone levels within 3 min of capture (basal) and again 30 min later. By alternating the modified and standard trapping techniques over 7 months of the active season we demonstrated that seasonal patterns of variation in steroid hormone levels can be accurately described with the simpler, standard trapping technique. Basal and 30-min post-capture testosterone levels were high during mating and dropped to a persistently low level thereafter. Conversely, both cortisol and corticosterone were at their seasonal low during mating and climbed to peak levels in June following reproduction. Plasma glucocorticosteroid levels increased during the 30 min after capture and handling at all times of the active season, and these elevated levels were similar to the levels obtained by standard trapping. Testosterone levels during the mating period also increased in response to capture and handling. The contrasting patterns of seasonal variation in glucocorticosteroid and testosterone levels and the changes induced by capture and handling suggest that when testosterone concentration is high, adrenocortical activity is suppressed. Abstract

The ultrasonically detected daily activity of 10 male and 10 female eastern chipmunks was measured before, during, and after two days of food and water deprivation. Under ad libitum ingestion conditions, eastern chipmunks were not found to be strongly diurnal with only 60% of their total activity occurring in the light Food and water deprivation altered total daily activity as well as the circadian patterning of activity.  相似文献

Information on the widespread function of the suprachiasmatic (SCN) pacemaker has increased dramatically in the past decade for laboratory rodents and for humans. Interest is now also growing in the adaptive value of SCN pacemakers in wild species of free-living mammals in natural pristine habitat. The squirrel family, Sciuridae, is highly diverse in North America. Radiation into many specialized groups has evolved in response to the temporal and spatial characteristics of specific habitats. The sciurids thus offer possibilities for comparison of SCN function for closely related species from very different habitats. Results from field and laboratory investigations concerning the ecological significance of the SCN are reported here for three ground squirrel species. The semi-fossorial antelope squirrels of the American southwest deserts were arrhythmic in above ground activities after deletion of the SCN pacemaker. In a desert enclosure, predation rates rose dramatically for lesioned animals in comparison to intact controls. The semi-arborial chipmunks were prone to capture by mustelid burrow predators such as weasels after SCN-deletion, even though the chipmunks did not exhibit any above ground activity at night. The telltale cue for the predator was apparently arrhythmic restlessness within the complex home burrow. The semi-fossorial golden-mantled squirrels of the Cascade Mountains of western United States rely on profound, long-lasting hibernation for over-wintering. Periods of torpor alternate with brief euthermic arousal episodes lasting less than 24 h throughout the 5- to 8-month winter phase. Deletion of the SCN in golden-mantled squirrels resulted in aberrations of hibernation arousal patterns that were metabolically expensive and put individuals at risk of starvation immediately after emergence in spring.  相似文献
