A range of granular sludges was taken from industrial anaerobic sludge blanket reactors treating a wide variety of wastewaters and a comparison was made between the polymers which were extractable from the granules and their internal structures. The study of the internal structure, using sequential staining of ultra-thin sections, showed the complexity of granular sludges. Much of the area was occupied by Gram-negative cells and the area which stained positive for protein was found to increase nearer the centre of the granules. This was accompanied by a decrease in the carbohydrate positive areas. Positive areas for lipid were widespread throughout the granules. Changes in the internal structure were observed when the type of wastewater treated by the granules was changed and a comparison between sludges treating the same type of wastewater showed that factors other than the nature of the substrate must be considered as parameters which will affect the structure of the granules. Although an appreciable variation in the granule strengths was noted, it was not possible to relate these differences, on an overall basis, to either the internal structure or the chemical composition of the extracted polymers. However, an examination of data for granules produced during the treatment of nominally similar wastes did suggest that there would be a relationship between polymer composition and granule strength in these cases.  相似文献

Two kinds of biocarriers were adopted and a combined process of “AMC (Anaerobic microorganism carrier)-UASB and PBG (Porous bio-gel)-MBBR” was operated at the pilot scale for the treatment of real textile wastewater. The influence mechanism of the two carriers on the start-up, pollutant removal and sludge reduction were investigated within 118 days of operation. The dominant functional bacteria in anaerobic and aerobic systems were identified by high-throughput sequencing, and the possible ways and related mechanisms of nutrient removal and sludge reduction were analyzed based on the data. 37.0 ± 7.5 % and 53 ± 12.7 % of COD removal efficiencies were achieved in anaerobic system and aerobic system, respectively. Ammonia nitrogen concentration decreased from 20 to 45 to 3.49 ± 0.54 mg/L after treatment. An anaerobe was found to be closely related to color removal, which existed in both anaerobic and aerobic systems, achieving 84.0 % of color removal. With the operation of the system, the sludge yield decreased gradually. The sludge yields of anaerobic and aerobic systems were calculated individually and compared with similar studies. Aging biofilms were characterized to explore the factors associated with biofilm renewal.  相似文献

The structures of microbial communities in lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors for treating municipal wastewater with different ratios of COD soluble/ COD total were studied using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) of 16S rRNA genes. The microbial structure of the inoculum sludge obtained from a full-scale UASB reactor of treating potato processing wastewater was compared with the structures of sludges collected from three lab-scale UASB reactors after eight months feeding with raw municipal wastewater, with CEPS (chemically enhanced primary sedimentation) pretreated municipal wastewater, and with a synthetic municipal sewage, respectively. Computer-aided numerical analysis of the DGGE fingerprints showed that the bacterial community underwent major changes. The sludges for treating raw and CEPS pretreated wastewater had very similar bacterial and archaeal communities (82% and 96% similarity) but were different from that for treating the synthetic sewage. The feasibility of treating low-strength wastewater with an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, using a poly(vinyl alcohol)-gel carrier, at various temperatures and hydraulic retention times (HRTs) was examined. The temperature was decreased from 35°C to 25°C and then to 15°C. The HRT was reduced from 2.0 h to 0.22 h. The COD removal rate reached 28 kg-COD m(-3)d(-1) at 35°C, 16 kg-COD m(-3)d(-1) at 25°C, and 6 kg-COD m(-3)d(-1) at 15°C. The COD removal rate was reduced by half for each temperature reduction of 10°C.  相似文献

Treatment of a fresh leachate with high-strength organics and calcium from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration plant by an up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was investigated under mesophilic conditions, emphasizing the influence of organic loading rate (OLR). When the reactor was fed with the raw leachate (COD as high as 70,390-75,480 mg/L) at an OLR of 12.5 kg COD/(m3 d), up to ∼82.4% of COD was removed suggesting the feasibility of UASB process for treating fresh leachates from incineration plants. The ratio of volatile solids/total solids (VS/TS) of the anaerobic sludge in the UASB decreased significantly after a long-term operation due to the precipitation of calcium carbonate in the granules. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation shows that Methanosaeta-like species were in abundance, accompanied by a variety of other species. The result was further confirmed by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) and sequencing.  相似文献

To improve the performance of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating raw domestic wastewater under temperate climates conditions, the addition of a sludge digester to the process was investigated. With the decrease in temperature, the COD removal decreased from 78% at 28 °C to 42% at 10 °C for the UASB reactor operating alone at a hydraulic retention time of 6 h. The decrease was attributed to low hydrolytic activity at lower temperatures that reduced suspended matter degradation and resulted in solids accumulation in the top of the sludge blanket. Solids removed from the upper part of the UASB sludge were treated in an anaerobic digester. Based on sludge degradation kinetics at 30 °C, a digester of 0.66 l per liter of UASB reactor was design operating at a 3.20 days retention time. Methane produced by the sludge digester is sufficient to maintain the temperature at 30 °C.  相似文献
