Orangutans are the only great ape in Asia. Since orangutan densities vary between habitat types within regions and within similar habitat types among regions, it is important to determine areas with high densities for their protection. In this paper we show that orangutan density in old-growth dryland forests in the Leuser Ecosystem, Sumatra is significantly related to the density of large strangling figs and topsoil pH. In addition, large fig density depends on topsoil pH. Provided that orangutans are present and no hunting or logging occur, topsoil pH seems a promising method for rapid assessment of potential orangutan density over large areas. 相似文献

The highly specialized akysid catfish genus Breitensteinia is revised; two new species are described. Breitensteinia cessator is described from Sumatra and western Borneo. It can be distinguished by its large, wide-set eyes and evenly scattered brown spots on the dorsal and pectoral fins. Breitensteinia hypselurus is described from western Borneo. It can be distinguished by its relatively tall neural spines on caudal vertebrae, smooth posterior edge of dorsal spine, short caudal peduncle, and fewer vertebrae. Breitensteinia insignis is sexually dimorphic. 相似文献

Although recent molecular studies have clarified the phylogeny of mongooses, the systematics of the Southeast Asian species was incomplete as the collared mongoose Urva semitorquata and some debatable taxa (Hose's mongoose, Palawan mongoose) were missing in the analyses. We sequenced three mitochondrial (cytochrome b, ND2, control region) and one nuclear (beta‐fibrinogen intron 7) fragments of the Southeast Asian mongooses to clarify the systematic position of the different species and populations occurring in this region. Our results showed that the collared mongoose is closely related to the crab‐eating mongoose Urva urva, these two species forming a sister‐group to the short‐tailed mongoose Urva brachyura. Despite Sumatran collared mongooses having a peculiar orange phenotype, we showed that they exhibited very little genetic divergence to individuals from Borneo. In contrast, the populations of the short‐tailed mongoose from Borneo were strongly divergent to those from Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra, and these might represent separate species. Within the crab‐eating mongoose, we observed little geographical genetic structure. Our study suggests that Hose's mongoose is not a valid species. The Palawan mongooses did not cluster with the other populations of the short‐tailed mongoose; they were closer to the collared mongoose and should be included in this species. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London 相似文献

Reliable estimates of great ape abundance are needed to assess distribution, monitor population status, evaluate conservation tactics, and identify priority populations for conservation. Rather than using direct counts, surveyors often count ape nests. The standing crop nest count (SCNC) method converts the standing stock of nests into animal densities using a set of parameters, including nest decay rate. Nest decay rates vary greatly over space and time, and it takes months to calculate a site-specific value. The marked nest count (MNC) method circumvents this issue and only counts new nests produced during a defined period. We compared orangutan densities calculated by the two methods using data from studies in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia. We show how animal densities calculated using nest counts should be cautiously interpreted when used to make decisions about management or budget allocation. Even with site-specific decay rates, short studies using the SCNC method may not accurately reflect the current population unless conducted at a scale sufficient to include wide-ranging orangutan movement. Density estimates from short studies using the MNC method were affected by small sample sizes and by orangutan movement. To produce reliable results, the MNC method may require a similar amount of effort as the SCNC method. We suggest a reduced reliance on the traditional line transect surveys in favor of feasible alternative methods when absolute abundance numbers are not necessary or when site-specific nest decay rates are not known. Given funding constraints, aerial surveys, reconnaissance walks, and interview techniques may be more cost-effective means of accomplishing some survey goals. 相似文献

Geographic variation in primate vocalizations has been described at two levels. First, at the level of acoustic variation within the same call type between populations and, second, at the level of presence or absence of certain call types in different populations. Acoustic variation is of interest because there are several factors that can explain this variation, such as gene flow, ecological factors and population density. Here we focus on the first level in a Southeast Asian primate, the Thomas langur. We recorded male loud calls in four populations that differed in their geographic distances from each other and had varying geographic barriers in between them, such as rivers and mountain ranges. The presence of these barriers leads to expectations of loud call variation under the gene flow model, which are examined here. We conducted a principal components analysis to condense the number of acoustic variables. With a subsequent discriminant function analysis on the six principal component scores, we found that the percentage of loud calls that were correctly assigned to a population was relatively high (50.0-76.2%) when three randomly selected loud calls from each male were used. Using the discriminant functions from this analysis to predict population membership of the remainder of the loud calls yielded lower, but still relatively high correct assignment percentages (26.2-66.7%). Analyses to examine the influence of barriers on similarities between populations confirm our expectations. We discuss that differences in loud calls are probably most parsimoniously explained by gene flow (or the lack thereof) between the populations and that future studies of genetic differences are crucial to test this hypothesis. 相似文献

Resin producing agroforestry in the Krui area of Sumatra in Indonesia is presented as an environmentally friendly, income
generating land-use system which contributes to both development and conservation objectives. We studied the change in household
income portfolios in three communities in the Krui area. The studies revealed that in the period 1995–2004 agroforestry remained
the main source of income. We predict, however, that due to declining resin productivity per hectare, and rising price and
demand for timber, an increasing number of farmers will cut their mature agroforests in the near future. At the same time
our data suggests that farmers will continue tree planting activities. In result old agroforests may vanish while new ones
will be established.

The Siak is a black water river in central Sumatra, Indonesia, which owes its brown color to dissolved organic matter (DOM)
leached from surrounding, heavily disturbed peat soils. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations measured during
five expeditions in the Siak between 2004 and 2006 are among the highest reported world wide. The DOM decomposition appeared
to be a main factor influencing the oxygen concentration in the Siak which showed values down to 12 μmol l−1. Results derived from a box-diffusion model indicated that in addition to the DOC concentration and the associated DOM decomposition
the water-depth also plays a crucial role in regulating the oxygen levels in the river because of its impact on the turbulence
in the aquatic boundary layer and the surface/volume ratio of water in the river. Model results imply furthermore that a reduced
water-depth could counteract an increased oxygen consumption caused by an enhanced DOM leaching during the transition from
dry to wet periods. This buffer mechanism seems to be close to its limits as indicated by sensitivity studies which showed
in line with measured data that an increase of the DOC concentrations by ~15% could already lead to anoxic conditions in the
Siak. This emphasizes the sensitivity of the Siak against further peat soil degradation, which is assumed to increase DOC
concentrations in the rivers. 相似文献

Quaternary rainforest refugia in south-east Asia: using termites (Isoptera) as indicators 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

In south-east Asia, during Quaternary glaciations, increased seasonality and sea level decreases of ~120 m caused considerable fragmentation of the rainforest. It is believed that most of the region's core was covered with savannah vegetation, and rainforest was confined to a few refugia. We investigated the geographical extent of the savannah vegetation and the positions of the refugia, using a combination of palynonlogical, geological, fossil and termite data. Our results show that during the Last Glacial Maximum, most of Thailand, Peninsula Malaysia, western and southern Borneo, eastern and southern Sumatra, and Java were probably covered by savannah. Rainforest refugia were probably present in northern and eastern Borneo, northern and western Sumatra and the Mentawai islands. We also discuss a possible complete history of the region. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 75 , 453–466. 相似文献

The recolonization of the Krakatau islands by termites (Isoptera), and their biogeographical origins 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The termite assemblages of the Krakatau islands and five sites in Sumatra and Java were investigated, using a standardized transect sampling method. Five species were found on the Krakatau islands that have not been collected there before. The total number of termites recorded on the islands since the 1883 volcanic eruption is now twelve species, all of which are wood feeders. No termites nesting in or feeding on the soil were found on the Krakataus, suggesting that rafting in wood is the primary method by which the termites recolonized the islands. 相似文献

Island systems are important models for evolutionary biology because they provide convenient, discrete biogeographic units of study. Continental islands with a history of intermittent dry land connections confound the discrete definitions of islands and have led zoologists to predict (i) little differentiation of terrestrial organisms among continental shelf islands and (ii) extinction, rather than speciation, to be the main cause of differences in community composition among islands. However, few continental island systems have been subjected to well‐sampled phylogeographic studies, leaving these biogeographic assumptions of connectivity largely untested. We analysed nine unlinked loci from shrews of the genus Crocidura from seven mountains and two lowland localities on the Sundaic continental shelf islands of Sumatra and Java. Coalescent species delimitation strongly supported all currently recognized Crocidura species from Sumatra (six species) and Java (five species), as well as one undescribed species endemic to each island. We find that nearly all species of Crocidura in the region are endemic to a single island and several of these have their closest relative(s) on the same island. Intra‐island genetic divergence among allopatric, conspecific populations is often substantial, perhaps indicating species‐level diversity remains underestimated. One recent (Pleistocene) speciation event generated two morphologically distinct, syntopic species on Java, further highlighting the prevalence of within‐island diversification. Our results suggest that both between‐ and within‐island speciation processes generated local endemism in Sundaland, supplementing the traditional view that the region's fauna is relictual and primarily governed by extinction. 相似文献
