What causes extended lows in microtine cycles?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary Synchronous declines of sympatric shrew and microtine populations in boreal regions of Fennoscandia have been claimed as evidence that predation deepens and extends the low phase of the microtine population cycles. Assuming that shrews and microtines have the same maximum intrinsic rate of increase, and that the predators kill the shrews and microtines that they encounter unselectively, this hypothesis predicts that sympatric shrew and microtine populations will decline and increase simultaneously. In this study conducted at 60°56N in southeast Norway, as well as in 13 of 15 other studies at sites in Fennoscandia, the shrew populations declined simultaneously with the sympatric microtine populations, but recovered sooner. The shrew-microtine ratio among animals trapped peaked about 2 years after the peak in the microtine population. The same pattern was found in the diet of raptors in Fennoscandia. Since the maximum intrinsic rate of increase does not seem to be higher in shrews than in microtines, the pattern suggests that either predation is not causing the extended lows in the microtine populations, or that the proportion of predators that selectively kill microtines fluctuates during the microtine cycle. The most likely candidates for selective killers are weasels.  相似文献

We studied the distribution patterns and microhabitat use in gastrointestinal helminths of the shrews Sorex araneus and S. caecutiens in Finland. The distribution of species prevalences was bimodal, and in S. araneus the abundance (mean intensity) was positively associated with commonness (prevalence), as assumed by the core-satellite species hypothesis (Hanski 1982). However, the positive correlation between prevalence and intensity was observed only when the effects of helminth body size and taxonomic group (cestodes vs nematodes) on intensity were controlled for. The nematodes of the genus Longistriata occurred predictably as core species, whereas the identity of the core cestodes was more variable between host species and regions. Helminth body size and taxonomic group were not related to the degree of aggregation in shrew populations, but helminth body size seemed to explain the differences in the distribution patterns of helminths between shrews and voles. The core species did not show more segregation in microhabitat use than randomly selected species. In fact, the two core nematodes showed largely overlapping intestinal distributions. We conclude that linear intestinal space is not a key resource for shrew nematodes, but it may be for shrew cestodes.  相似文献

Emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases of wildlife origin have led pre-emptive pathogen surveillances in animals to be a public health priority. Rodents and shrews are among the most numerically abundant vertebrate taxa and are known as natural hosts of important zoonotic viruses. Many surveillance programs focused more on RNA viruses. In comparison, much less is known about DNA viruses harbored by these small mammals. To fill this knowledge gap, tissue specimens of 232 animals including 226 rodents, five shrews and one hedgehog were collected from 5 counties in Kenya and tested for the presence of DNA viruses belonging to 7 viral families by PCR. Diverse DNA sequences of adenoviruses, adeno-associated viruses, herpesviruses and polyomaviruses were detected. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that most of these viruses showed distinction from previously described viruses and formed new clusters. Furthermore, this is the first report of the discovery and full-length genome characterization of a polyomavirus in Lemniscomys species. This novel polyomavirus, named LsPyV KY187, has less than 60% amino acid sequence identity to the most related Glis glis polyomavirus 1 and Sciurus carolinensis polyomavirus 1 in both large and small T-antigen proteins and thus can be putatively allocated to a novel species within Betapolyomavirus. Our findings help us better understand the genetic diversity of DNA viruses in rodent and shrew populations in Kenya and provide new insights into the evolution of those DNA viruses in their small mammal reservoirs. It demonstrates the necessity of ongoing pathogen discovery studies targeting rodent-borne viruses in East Africa.  相似文献

Shrew species of the subfamily Soricinae have unusually high metabolic rates when compared to Crocidurinae shrews and other similar-sized mammals. The aim of this study was to clarify whether the high basal metabolic rate of Soricinae shrews is reflected in a high capillary density in their muscles. To this end, the capillary supply of four limb muscles and diaphragm of the common shrew (Sorex araneus) was quantified from cross-sectioned muscles. The capillary densities of the limb muscles were 2575 ± 329, 3111 ± 299, 2812 ± 197 and 2752 ± 173 capillaries mm−2 fibre area in gastrocnemius lateralis, g. medialis, plantaris and soleus, respectively. Capillary density of the shrew diaphragm (6691 ± 1057) was double that of the limb muscles. This value is among the highest ever measured in mammals. In general, the capillary supply in the hind limb of the common shrew is about 3–4 times higher than commonly found in the leg muscles of the laboratory rat or other bigger mammals, but similar to those in Crocidurinae shrews and some small rodents. Thus the high resting metabolism of the common shrew is not associated with an extraordinarily high capillary density. The apparent disparity between basal metabolic rate and muscle capillary supply in S. araneus is probably due to the small aerobic scope of shrews in the subfamily Soricinae. The purpose of the present study was (1) to test the ability of six alternative methods to detect random and non-random patterns of overall association in artificial presence/absence data sets, and (2) to analyse overall associations and effects of sampling heterogeneity in four empirical presence/absence data sets of helminths of the common shrew Sorex araneus. In the null model, the expected distribution was created by means of a randomisation procedure. Application of methods on artificial data sets indicated a generally low probability of type I statistical error. All methods were more likely to detect positive non-randomness than negative non-randomness of comparable strength, which may partly explain the predominance of positive overall associations in empirical data sets. The analyses based on artificial data sets indicated slight differences between methods in their ability to detect non-randomness of known strength (type II error). However, some of the methods failed to detect strong overall association when the artificial assemblages consisted of roughly equal numbers of positive and negative pairwise interactions. The structure of the artificial data sets always disappeared when the expected distribution was constrained to account for “sampling heterogeneity”, i.e. varying prevalence of species among subsamples. The patterns of overall association in real helminth communities were variable, depending on the locality and association method used, but not usually on the simulation constraint used. Of the four empirical data sets analysed, one showed an unequivocal positive structure, in one the structure depended on the method used, and two data sets from the same locality were unequivocally unstructured (random). 中国动物区系中的鼩(鼠青)类,或称赤齿鼩类,包括31个种;除此之外,东北省份还可能存在另外2个种。生物地理类群包括:1)东北寒温带针叶林(泰加)-Neomys fodiens,Sorex caecutiens,S.daphaenodon,S.gracillimus,S.isodon,S.mirabilis,S.roboratus,S.tundrensis以及S.unguiculatus;2)在山区针叶林中具有孤立居群的东北寒温带针叶林-Sorex minutissimus;3)中国喜马拉雅地区-Chimarrogale himalayica,Nectogale elegans,Sorex bedfordiae,s.thibetanus,Soriculus caudatus,S.leucops,S.macrurus,及S.nigrescens;4)中国特有种,或接近于特有种-Anourosorex squamipes,Blarinella quadraticauda,Chimarrogale styani,So-rex asper,S.cansulus,S.cylindricauda,S.excelsus,S.sinalis,Soriculus fumidus,S.hypsibius,S.lamula,S.parca,S.salenskii,及S.smithii。Sorex minutus的生物地理位置(仅见于天山)目前尚不清楚。  相似文献

The aim of our study was to compare the shrew community diversity and structure in gradients of tropical forest degradation and restoration. Four plots within each of six habitats of the Ziama Biosphere Reserve were surveyed, including primary forest, secondary forest, cultivated fields, recently (less than 3 years) abandoned fields, young (10–12 years) forest restoration plots, and old (34 years) restoration plots. From August to November 2003, we pitfall-trapped 2,509 shrews representing 11 species. Shrew species richness and composition was similar in the six habitat surveyed, while shrew species abundance varied between habitats. Canopy height and cover, density of stems and trees and understorey density were shown to constitute important parameters influencing the abundance of several shrew species. After clear-cutting, restoration of key attributes of the forest vegetation structure was possible in 10–34 years, either by natural regeneration or by planting of seedlings. The relative abundance of most shrew species was similar between restoring forest (i.e., young restoration plots or fallows) and primary forest. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of these two methods of forest restoration, one of the most suitable management practices to restore forest while preserving shrew biodiversity could be to perform an alternation of native seedling plantation lines and fallows.  相似文献

A survey of 96 sites in a range of riparian habitats in the catchments of five rivers during June–August 1998 used the bait tube method to investigate the geographical distribution and habitat occurrence of Water Shrews (Neomys fodiens) in the Weald of South‐East England. Water Shrews were found at 42% of sites, and were widely distributed in all river catchments except the Mole. They occurred in many riparian habitats, including rivers, streams, canals and ditches, with a range of physical and biotic characteristics. There were no signs of habitat avoidance in response to human disturbance but Water Shrews were absent from the river catchment with lowest water quality. Logistic regression analysis was used to model the effect of habitat variables on the presence of Water Shrews, with current speed, water depth, bank incline and bank‐side vegetation identified as important variables. Fast‐flowing shallow waters had a significant positive effect on their presence, whereas scarce herbaceous vegetation and a bank of low incline had a significant negative effect. These habitat variables appear to be reliable indicators of the probability of finding Water Shrews at a particular site, and have implications for habitat management and conservation.  相似文献
