A number of recent neuroimaging studies using self referential tasks have investigated whether self referential processing depends on a unique neural basis that operates specifically in the medial prefrontal cortex. However, these studies have provided contradictory results despite the use of similar methodologies. We hypothesized that these discrepancies are partially related to the task-difficulty that presents dissociations reaction times in the self- and other-referential tasks. We therefore measured brain activity during self and other referential tasks to determine if such activity can be dissociated according to the reaction times (fast versus slow) for the trait words. Activation differed across self and other only in the slow word condition. The self referential condition with slow reaction time produced greater activation in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, whereas the other referential condition with slow reaction time produced activation of the middle temporal gyrus. Results suggested that the task-difficulty might affect whether or not brain activities within MPFC would be dissociated between self- and other-referential processing.  相似文献

Facile fabrication of building blocks with precisely controlled dimensions is imperative in the development of functional devices and materials. We demonstrate the assembly of nanoscale viral building blocks of controlled lengths using a biologically motivated strategy. To achieve this we exploit the simple self-assembly mechanism of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), whose length is solely governed by the length of its genomic mRNA. We synthesize viral mRNA of desired lengths using simple molecular biology techniques, and in vitro assemble the mRNA with viral coat proteins to yield viral building blocks of controlled lengths. The results indicate that the assembly of the viral building blocks is consistent and reproducible, and can be readily extended to assemble building blocks with genetically modified coat proteins (TMV1cys). Additionally, we confirm the potential utility of the TMV1cys viral building blocks with controlled dimensions via covalent and quantitative conjugation of fluorescent markers. We envision that our biologically inspired assembly strategy to design and construct viral building blocks of controlled dimensions could be employed to fabricate well-controlled nanoarchitectures and hybrid nanomaterials for a wide variety of applications including nanoelectronics and nanocatalysis.  相似文献

Measurement of cortisol concentration can contribute important information about an individual's ability to adjust to various environmental demands of both physical and psychosocial origin. However, one uncertainty that affects the possibilities of correctly interpreting and designing field studies is the lack of observations of the impact of seasonal changes on cortisol excretion. For this reason, the month‐to‐month changes in diurnal cortisol concentration, the awakening cortisol response (ACR), maximum morning concentration, and fall during the day were studied in a group of 24 healthy men and women 32 to 61 yrs of age engaged in active work. On one workday for 12 consecutive months, participants collected saliva at four time points for determination of cortisol: at awakening, +30 min, +8 h, and at 21:00 h. Data were analyzed by a repeated measures design with month (12 levels) and time‐of‐day (4 levels) as categorical predictors. Cortisol concentrations were analyzed on a log scale. The diurnal pattern of cortisol was similar across months (interaction between month and time of day: p>0.4). The main effects of month and time‐of‐day were statistically significant (p <0.001). Highest concentrations were observed in February, March, and April, and lowest concentrations were observed in July and August. There were no statistically significant effects in any of the other measures, or between men and women. In conclusion, a seasonal variation in salivary cortisol concentrations was detected in an occupationally active population. Thus, seasonal variation needs to be taken into account when designing and evaluating field studies and interventions and when making comparisons across studies.  相似文献

The physiological phenotype of Aspergillus nidulans was determined under different environmental conditions through the quantification of the intracellular and extracellular metabolite pools and clear evidence of the presence of a novel fungal metabolic pathway, the phosphoketolase pathway, was obtained. Induction of the phosphoketolase pathway resulted after blocking the EMP pathway through the deactivation of glyceraldehyde-3-P dehydrogenase (G3PD). Deactivation of G3PD in cultivations of A. nidulans on glucose and xylose led to a 10-fold decrease in the specific growth rate; however, growth could still be sustained solely through the phosphoketolase pathway. Metabolomics and machine learning tools were successfully used to monitor the alteration caused by the inhibition of G3PD in the metabolism of A. nidulans grown on glucose, xylose, acetate as well as mixtures of glucose or xylose with acetate. This is the first study that demonstrates in vivo that the fungal central carbon metabolism includes an active phosphoketolase pathway.  相似文献

Question: Is the successional transition from pine to hardwood, which has been inferred from chronosequence plots in previous studies, validated through a time line of satellite imagery? Location: Durham, North Carolina, USA. Methods: We examined successional trends in a time‐series of winter‐summer pairs of Thematic Mapper imagery from 1986 to 2000. We calculated the normalized difference of vegetation index (NDVI) for winter and summer, as well as the difference between summer and winter NDVI (i.e., summer increment NDVI). A set of approximately 50 forest stands of known age and phenology were used to interpret patterns in winter and summer increment NDVI over successional time, and a continuum was found to exist between pine‐dominance and hardwood‐dominance. We fitted a series of linear regressions that modeled the change in winter and summer increment NDVI as a function of initial winter and summer increment NDVI, and additional explanatory variables. Results: All regressions were highly significant (P < 0.0001, R2= ca. 0.3). Predicted dynamics are in accord with successional theory, with pixels moving from evergreen dominance to deciduous dominance along a line of fairly constant summer NDVI. A large disturbance event that occurred over the course of this study, Hurricane Fran, appeared to slow rates of succession in the short term (1–3 years), but increase the rate of conversion to hardwoods over longer time spans. Conclusions: We conclude that temporal sequences of remote sensing images provide an excellent opportunity for broad‐scale monitoring of successional processes, and that continuous metrics of that change are essential to accurate monitoring.  相似文献

Questions: Density dependence is thought to restrict exponential growth as well as give rise to size structure in populations. Size hierarchy in trees from tropical dry deciduous forests is studied to ask (1) whether nature of competition is symmetric or asymmetric and (2) what is the self thinning trajectory under a natural gradient of tree density. Location: Western India. Methods: Density was measured as the number of trees in 10‐m radius circular plots (n= 96) and size was measured at DBH. Size variation was evaluated by the Gini coefficient (n= 1239 trees). Results: Size inequality between neighbours decreased with density but in a non‐linear manner. In the backdrop of existing theory this indirectly suggests that competitive interactions may be symmetric over a ‘depletive’ resource such as below‐ground water (rather than a ‘pre‐emptive’ resource such as light), which is very plausible in a semi‐arid environment. The self thinning coefficient derived from the relationship between stem diameter and density (γ~?1/4), is higher than expected from existing models of allometric plant growth (γ=?1/3) which are based on above‐ground interactions alone. Seen in conjunction, these results suggest that above‐ground structures, such as stem size, do not adequately represent the outcome of competitive interactions when below‐ground resources, such as water, may be more important under semi‐arid conditions. Conclusions: The non‐linear relationship between size inequality and density indicates that there exists a density threshold beyond which investment in above‐ground biomass becomes sluggish in semi‐arid, deciduous forests. Since current allometric models do not incorporate below‐ground biomass for trees, these data suggest that a more comprehensive allometric growth model may have higher predictive power and wider applicability.  相似文献

目的:研究老年性白内障患者生活质量与自我效能感、自我感受负担和社会关系质量的相关性。方法:纳入我院于2018年8月~2020年12月期间接收的老年性白内障患者116例作为研究组,另选取同期来我院检查眼睛视力的100例志愿者作为对照组,两组均填写中文版低视力者生活质量量表(CLVQOL)、自我感受负担量表(SPBS)、一般自我效能感量表(GSES)、社会关系质量量表等评分量表。经Pearson线性相关分析CLVQOL评分与SPBS、GSES和社会关系质量的关系。结果:共发放问卷216份,收回有效问卷212份,回收率为98.15%。研究组的身体机能、精神心理、症状与视功能、社会活动、总分低于对照组,组间对比差异有统计学意义(P<0.05)。研究组身体因素、情感因素、经济因素、总分高于对照组(P<0.05)。研究组个体对环境挑战的认知、个体对自我的认知、个体对控制感的认知以及总分低于对照组(P<0.05)。研究组家庭承担、家庭亲密度、朋友关系、总分低于对照组(P<0.05)。Pearson线性相关分析结果显示,CLVQOL评分与GSES和社会关系质量呈正相关,而与SPBS呈负相关(P<0.05)。结论:老年性白内障患者生活质量较差,与自我效能感、自我感受负担和社会关系质量密切相关,应重视上述相关因素的改善,以提高患者生活质量。  相似文献

Sunless tanning with dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is not considered to be a sunscreen although it does absorb parts of the ultraviolet (UV) spectrum. We investigated the protection with topical application of DHA against solar UV-induced skin carcinogenesis in lightly pigmented hairless hr/hr C3H/Tif mice. Broad-spectrum UV radiation, simulating the UV part of the solar spectrum was obtained from one Philips TL12 and five Bellarium-S SA-1-12 tubes. Three groups of mice were UV-exposed four times a week to a dose-equivalent of four times the standard erythema dose (SED), without or with application of 5 or 20% DHA only twice a week. Similarly, three groups of mice were treated with DHA and irradiated with a high UV dose (8 SED), simulating a skin burn. Two groups (controls) were not irradiated, but either left untreated or treated with 20% DHA alone. The UV-induced skin pigmentation by melanogenesis could easily be distinguished from DHA-induced browning and was measured by a non-invasive, semi-quantitative method. Application of 20% DHA reduced by 63% the pigmentation produced by 4 SED, however, only by 28% the pigmentation produced by 8 SED. Furthermore, topical application of 20% DHA significantly delayed the time to appearance of the first tumor ≥1 mm (P=0.0012) and the time to appearance of the third tumor (P=2×10−6) in mice irradiated with 4 SED. However, 20% DHA did not delay tumor development in mice irradiated with 8 SED. Application of 5% DHA did not influence pigmentation or photocarcinogenesis.In conclusion, this is the first study to show that the superficial skin coloring generated by frequent topical application of DHA in high concentrations may delay skin cancer development in hairless mice irradiated with moderate UV doses.  相似文献
