Sediments of the southern Baltic Sea were analysed for content of steryl chlorin esters, the chlorin compounds discovered recently in the marine environment. The chlorin esters occur in the Baltic sediments in substantial amounts and form a considerable fraction of the total chlorin content. Among the physicochemical parameters studied the highest correlation with the steryl chlorins showed organic carbon content in sediments and the content of fraction of sediments smaller than 10 μm. A significant correlation was observed between the steryl chlorins content and other chlorins as chlorophylla, phaeophytina, pyrophaeophytina as well as with β-carotene, the distinctly less significant correlation was with phaeophorbidea. This indicates an other way of formation of the steryl chlorins from algae than zooplankton grazing.  相似文献

Melanin synthesis in the dematiaceous, polymorphic hyphomycete Wangiella dermatitidis, a human pathogen, was investigated by biochemical and physiological techniques. Mutants with a decrease or loss in melanin synthesis were induced and isolated. Melanin precursors were obtained from the mutants, purified, and then identified by comparison with authentic compounds from Verticillium dahliae. Isolation of scytalone, vermelone, flaviolin, and 1,8-dihydroxynaphthalene from the mutants of Wangiella dermatitidis, and cross-feeding of the mutants with those of Verticillium dahliae indicated that melanin synthesis in this organism took place by the pentaketide pathway. Melanin that formed in cell walls of an albino mutant treated with scytalone was identical in appearance to that in cell walls of the wild-type strain. This also suggested that pentaketide synthesis of melanin occurred in the fungus.  相似文献

The cell pigments produced by strains of Xanthomonas spp. (including representatives of all five presently recognized taxospecies of these phytopathogenic bacteria) have been isolated as isobutyl esters, purified, and characterized in terms of electronic absorption, chromatographic and co-chromatographic, and mass spectrometric properties. This comparative examination reveals that these bacteria produce brominated aryl-polyene pigments which are given the trivial name xanthomonadins. The several xanthomonadins usually occur as mixtures which have been resolved by chromatography and sorted into several Pigment Groups, thus enabling a more rational approach in our on-going systematic study of their exact chemical structures and biosynthesis. From what is presently known, some of the xanthomonadins might differ from xanthomonadin I, the exact structure of which has previously been determined in material from Xanthomonas juglandis ICPB XJ103, by their being monobrominated (rather than dibrominated, as is xanthomonadin I), by their having the equivalent of one methyl group less than does xanthomonadin I, and/or in other ways. The pigments of Xanthomonas ampelina (a little known and possibly questionable member of this genus) seem somewhat different from the pigments of the other Xanthomonas spp. The ability to form these distinctive xanthomonadin pigments is a useful chemotaxonomic marker for the genus Xanthomonas, since such pigments are not known to be formed by taxonomically or ecologically adjacent bacteria. Sufficient characterization of this assemblage of xanthomonadin pigments is presented so that they can be isolated and identified routinely on the basis of the aforementioned properties.  相似文献

Under far-red (>650 nm) illumination Anacystis nidulans grows poorly and develops a low chlorophyll content. During continued culture over many generations there are increases in growth rate and in the chlorophyll/phycocyanin ratio, usually occurring in concomitant and stepwise fashion. From such selection cultures six clones have been established which differ from the parent in pigment content and show improved growth rate in far-red light. From the evidence at hand the six clones are presumed to be spontaneous mutants selected under the photosynthetically restrictive condition of far-red illumination.  相似文献

Pigment analyses by TLC were carried out during and after the peak of a Peridinium bloom in Lake Kinneret (Israel). During the experimental period considerable changes occurred in the absolute and relative amounts of the various pigments, especially carotene, diadinoxanthine, peridinin, chlorophyll a and chlorophyl c. The ratio between total Carotenoid to total chlorophyll content is also followed. Our findings show that considerable changes in pigment composition in natural phytoplankton can occur while the species composition remains constant.  相似文献

Anacystis nidulans (Synechococcus) was maintained in a medium of low phosphate concentration (0.1 mM) and grew with a normal doubling time of 5 hrs at 30°C. Such cultures ahd a normal pigment composition and alkaline phosphatase was detectable at low specific activities only.The onset of phosphate-limited growth occurred when the phosphate concentration in the medium fell to a value below 4 M (the limit of accurate determination by the assay method used) and resulted in increases in alkaline phosphatase activity, reaching a final 10 to 15 fold increase in specific activity after a period of several hours. Marked changes in the overall pigment composition occurred in this period of growth restriction. The addition of phosphate to such cultures resulted in a halt in synthesis of the enzyme and the restoration of normal pigmentation before growth resumed at the normal rate.Several organic phosphate esters could replace inorganic phosphate for growth and were also hydrolyzed by the partially purified enzyme, but growth rates were characteristically lower and the specific activity only 3 to 4 fold higher than in cultures grown in phosphate excess.Studies with the partially purified enzyme suggested that it differed in some of its properties from other alkaline phosphatases described in the literature.Abbreviations Used pNP pnitrophenol - pNPP pnitrophenylphosphate  相似文献

Chlorophyll b is found in photosynthetic prokaryotes and primary and secondary endosymbionts, although their light-harvesting systems are quite different. Chlorophyll b is synthesized from chlorophyll a by chlorophyllide a oxygenase (CAO), which is a Rieske-mononuclear iron oxygenase. Comparison of the amino acid sequences of CAO among photosynthetic organisms elucidated changes in the domain structures of CAO during evolution. However, the evolutionary relationship between the light-harvesting system and the domain structure of CAO remains unclear. To elucidate this relationship, we investigated the CAO structure and the pigment composition of chlorophyll-protein complexes in the prasinophyte Micromonas. The Micromonas CAO is composed of two genes, MpCAO1 and MpCAO2, that possess Rieske and mononuclear iron-binding motifs, respectively. Only when both genes were introduced into the chlorophyll b-less Arabidopsis mutant (ch1-1) was chlorophyll b accumulated, indicating that cooperation between the two subunits is required to synthesize chlorophyll b. Although Micromonas has a characteristic light-harvesting system in which chlorophyll b is incorporated into the core antennas of reaction centers, chlorophyll b was also incorporated into the core antennas of reaction centers of the Arabidopsis transformants that contained the two Micromonas CAO proteins. Based on these results, we discuss the evolutionary relationship between the structures of CAO and light-harvesting systems.  相似文献

The phytochemical composition in two Tunisian globe artichoke cultivars (bracts, leaves, and floral stems) was evaluated in the plant byproducts. The results indicated that the bracts contain the highest levels of total phenols, o‐diphenols, and flavonoids, whereas tannins seem to be more abundant in the leaves. Bracts from the ‘Violet d'Hyères’ cultivar possessed more total phenols (160.8 mg/g DW), flavonoids (64.9 mg/g DW), and anthocyanins (15.3 μg/g DW) than the ‘Blanc d'Oran’ bracts (134.5 mg/g DW, 51.2 mg/g DW, and 8.3 μg/g DW, resp.). Sixty‐four volatile compounds were identified in the headspace of globe artichoke material, particularly in the bracts. The volatile profile showed that sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and non‐terpene derivatives were the main volatiles emitted by the bracts in both cultivars. These results suggest that globe artichoke byproducts might represent a potential source of natural compounds, which could be used as nutraceuticals or as ingredients in the design of functional foods.  相似文献

Cyanobacteria are versatile tetrapyrrole synthesizers that can regulate their tetrapyrrole content and composition in response to environmental signals. The present investigation analyses the interplay between light and dark regimes (continuous light, light-dark cycles (16:8) and continuous darkness) and aerobic, air-tight, and anaerobic environments (argon-enriched), on the relative composition of various pigments and growth attributes of Calothrix elenkenii as a prelude to exploiting C. elenkenii's bioindustrial potential as a source of pigments. Incubation in an anaerobic environment stimulated hormogonia formation and induced colouration/thickening of cells. Aerobically grown cultures of Calothrix, under continuous illumination produced the maximum amount of total phycobiliproteins and sugars, although chlorophyll accumulation and nitrogenase activity were highest in the light-dark environment. However, the beta-carotene content was observed to vary under anaerobic conditions with different light-dark regimes. This C. elenkenii strain can be a valuable source of pigments under optimized environmental conditions.  相似文献

 To investigate the effects of ozone exposure and soil drought, singly and in combination, on gas exchange, antioxidant contents and pigments in current-year needles of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] 4-year-old seedlings were fumigated in growth chambers with either charcoal-filtered air or with 100 nl l–1 ozone for 106 days. After 3 weeks a 20% reduction in gas exchange was observed in ozone-treated seedlings. However, no further decrease occurred in spite of continued ozone exposure. Whole needle ascorbate and apoplastic ascorbate increased until the end of the experiment and contents were 62% and 82%, respectively, higher than in ozone-free controls. This increase in ascorbate might have protected net photosynthesis from further decline. Ozone pre-treated plants and ozone-free controls were subjected to soil drought for 38 days which caused stomatal narrowing. Thereby ozone uptake was reduced when compared to well watered seedlings. At the end of the experiment drought alone, and even more in combination with ozone, had also caused an increase in ascorbate. Glutathione increased only in drought-stressed seedlings. The redox states of the ascorbate and the glutathione pools were not affected by any treatment. Superoxide dismutase activity declined under both stresses but was most reduced by ozone alone. While chlorophyll and neoxanthin contents remained unchanged, carotenes were significantly decreased upon drought. The combination of O3 and drought induced increased lutein contents, an increased pool size of the xanthophyll cycle as well as an increased epoxidation status of the xanthophyll cycle. These results suggest that spruce needles seem to be able to acclimate to ozone stress but also to drought stress by increasing their ascorbate pools and protecting pigments.
