Summary

The ultrastructure of early stages of the mussel, Hyriopsis (Limnoscapha) myersiana (Lea, 1856), was observed by scanning electron microscopy from the glochidial period until the onset of the juvenile stage 10 days later. Further observations were performed for an additional 13 days to assess juvenile development. Glochidia extracted from the brood chambers have a hookless, semi-oval and equivalve calcareous shell with numerous pores in the internal surface, pits in the external surface and cuticular spines in the ventral region. Keratin fibers with a random arrangement in the cuticle of the glochidial shell were also detected. The appearance of the foot within 10 days of in vitro glochidial culture was considered the main feature of metamorphosis to the juvenile stage. Another change during the following 13 days was the formation of a new periostracum exhibiting growth lines under the old glochidial shell. This development occurs mainly in the anterior region and is followed by hardening of the periostracum matrix by calcium deposition. Periostracum growth gradually became apparent in the lateral and posterior regions at the end of this period. The retraction of spines and the alteration of the external surface of the old shell are also described. It is speculated that transcuticular filaments identified in the juvenile stage may have sensory or metabolic exchange functions. The prominent foot, gradually covered by long dense cilia, shows rhythmical movements which suggest a role in feeding. Similarly, cilia present in the mantle may also be involved in the capture of food, while microvilli may facilitate absorption of dissolved materials. Longer cilia, sparsely distributed in the mantle, may function as chemo- or tactile sensors.  相似文献

Atlantic coast in mice. Preliminary studies showed that seawater contains heavy metals from domestic, agricultural and industrial wastes. Marine bivalves concentrate these pollutants by filtration and serve as vectors in human exposure. The objective of this study was to determine the concentration of heavy metals; cadmium (Cd); chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected in two coastal sites; Jorf Lasfar (JL) (neighbouring a phosphate processing platform) and Oualidia (OL) (a vegetable growing area) located at 120 and 190 km south of Casablanca, respectively. Another objective was to test and compare the toxicity of these mussels on mice. The results indicated the presence of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, and Pb) in mussels at different concentrations, depending on the collection period. Higher concentrations were obtained at JL than at OL: for example, Cd concentrations were 80 +/- 15 to 199 +/- 28 versus 23 +/- 5 microg/g mussel dry weight, respectively. Cramming with mussel powder did not increase Cd, Cr, or Pb concentration in either liver or kidneys of treated mice. The relative kidney weights were reduced. Increased glucose urea was observed in animals' urine. Treatment with mussels from OL induced significant reduction (20%) in mice body weight, together with an increase in creatinuria. These results indicate that mussels collected from OL are more harmful than those obtained from JL are. All these mussels should not be recommended for human consumption.  相似文献

The supply of larvae to the shore is important for population replenishment and intertidal community dynamics but its variability at most scales is not well understood. We tested the relationship between nearshore mussel larval abundance and intertidal settlement rates over several years at multiple spatiotemporal scales in Oregon and New Zealand. Abundance of competent larvae nearshore and intertidal recruitment rates were simultaneously quantified using collectors mounted at different depths on moorings 50-1100 m from shore, and at adjacent rocky intertidal sites. Total mussel larval abundance and oceanographic conditions were also measured in some locations. At all scales, abundance of nearshore mussel larvae was unrelated to intertidal recruitment rates. In the intertidal, patterns of mussel recruitment were persistent in space, with sites of consistently high or low recruitment. In contrast, nearshore competent larval abundance showed generally similar abundances among sites except for a high, and spatially-inconsistent, variability in Oregon during 1998 only. On moorings, recruitment tended to be greater on midwater collectors than shallower or deeper. Finally, on moorings larval abundance in traps and recruitment on collectors was unrelated. These results suggest that (1) among sites, the size of the nearshore larval pool is relatively uniform while onshore recruitment varies and is unrelated to larval abundance, (2) temporal variability in nearshore larval availability is not strongly expressed onshore, (3) vertical stratification of competent larvae nearshore is strong and may influence transport and recruitment, and (4) within-coast variability in onshore recruitment is strongly driven by processes occurring locally within the surf zone that need to be studied to understand coastal recruitment dynamics.  相似文献

In the framework of the national monitoring program for marine biotoxins in bivalve molluscs for 2002 and 2003, a total of 862 samples were examined to investigate the presence of domoic acid (DA). Samples mainly consisted of mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) and venus clams (Venus verucosa) from various Greek harvesting areas. In 2002, 83% of all samples examined contained less that 1 μg DA/g, while in 2003 this percentage was 95%. In both years, DA was only detected in springtime without any sample exceeding the regulatory level. In 2002, the highest value was 14.0 μg/g in mussels, while in 2003 these were 4.2 μg/g in mussels and 5.6 μg/g in venus clams. This is the first report regarding the presence of ASP toxins in Greek shellfish.  相似文献

Mussels, barnacles, and rockweeds often form a distinct mosaic of patches on rocky intertidal shores, and it has been suggested that these communities may represent alternative community states. One way that alternative community states can arise is if early successional events are scale-dependent, but it is not known if juvenile survivorships of mussels and barnacles are, in fact, scale-dependent. Scale-dependence of barnacles (Semibalanus balanoides (L.)) and mussels (Mytilus edulis L.) was tested in the Gulf of Maine, USA. In winter 1997, clearings of 1, 2, 4 and 8 m in diameter and uncleared controls were made in stands of the rockweed Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jolis at 12 sites spread evenly across four bays on Swan's Island, ME. Summer and fall-winter survivorship of barnacles, which recruited in spring 1997, were estimated by tracking the 1997 cohort until late winter 1998. Survivorship of mussels was estimated from following the fate of transplanted juveniles over 4 days in late August 1997. Both barnacles and mussels showed better survival in 4 and 8 m clearings than in small clearings and controls. There was also significant variation in survivorship among sites. Densities of gastropods in the clearings did not reflect survivorship patterns of barnacles and mussels. Barnacle survivorship increased in fall and winter, and in large clearings was comparable to survivorship in barnacle-dominated habitats. Mussel survivorship was low in all clearing sizes suggesting that mussel beds develop slowly.  相似文献

The clearance rates (CR in l g−1 h−1) and net absorption efficiencies (AE) of three co-occurring mytilid species were estimated to determine the effects of variation in ambient seston quantity (total particulate matter, TPM, mg l−1) and quality (particulate organic matter, POM, mg l−1; percent organic matter, PCOM=POM/TPM) on these physiological functions. CRS estimates were significantly different among the species (Mytilus galloprovincialis>Perna canaliculus=Aulacomya maoriana), but were not correlated with differences in species-dependent mean body size (P. canaliculus>M. galloprovincialis>A. maoriana). AE estimates were independent of mean body weight, and did not differ among the species. For all three species, CR responded in a simple linear manner to seston organic content, either in terms of POM (for A. maoriana and M. galloprovincialis), or PCOM (for P. canaliculus). The AE response, although also of a simple linear type, was species-dependent and involved interactions of two or three seston components: TPM, POM and PCOM for A. maoriana; POM and PCOM for M. galloprovincialis; and TPM and PCOM for P. canaliculus. For all three species, seston variation explained 15-20% of the variation in CR and 52-59% of the variation in AE. Comparisons among the species indicated that two very different responses to variation in seston quantity and quality exist. First, significant differences in CR result from species-dependent differences in the magnitude of the response to seston variation. Second, species-dependent responses to variation in seston variation resulted in the similarity of the AE responses. Thus, the three species appear to have evolved different strategies for dealing with seston variation, but with the end result that their AE responses do not differ. Finally, no evidence was found of a negative association between CR and AE for any of the three species, suggesting that under the seston conditions experienced in this work, these species do not have the physiological compensatory capacity to reduce CR in order to increase AE. The importance of a comparative (i.e., multi-species) approach utilising ambient seston is emphasised by the findings of this research if we are to understand better the feeding and digestive physiologies of suspension-feeding organisms such as mussels.  相似文献

According to the EU Regulation 854/2004, sampling plans must be set up to monitor production areas for the level of okadaic acid (OA) equivalents in live mussel. The level of these toxins, which are produced by harmful algal blooms, must not exceed 160 μg/kg of raw meat (Regulation 853/2004/EC). A sampling plan assessment consists in obtaining an OC (Operating Characteristic) curve showing both consumer and producer risks. The first risk is the risk of opening a shellfish area for harvest while the contamination level is above the threshold; whereas the second risk is the risk of closing a shellfish area having a contamination level under the threshold.For sampling plan validation purposes, a classical mathematical method was improved for the prediction of variance as function of the mean contamination level thanks to prior knowledge of the theoretical distribution fitting the observed OA levels among individual mussels. Indeed, knowing that, thanks to a regression analysis of literature data, for the lognormal distribution the scale parameter was observed to be directly proportional to the location parameter, the regression bias could be lowered. Literature data from Norway and Sweden showed different levels of variability between contamination events and depuration. However, the highest variability level was chosen to propose a best fit sampling plan in order to have a better approach of reality. We examined the spatial heterogeneity in three sessile rocky shore organisms, the mussel Perna perna, the barnacle Octomeris angulosa (Sowerby) and the red alga Gelidium pristoides (Turn.) at a range of continuous local scales along horizontal transects within mid- and upper mussel beds of South African shores. We also examined the relationships between variability of organisms and topographic features (rock depressions, slope, aspect), and between mussel, barnacle and algal variability over the same scales. To estimate spatial heterogeneity, we analyzed scaling properties of semivariograms using a fractal approach. Relationships between different variables at the different scales were examined by cross-semivariograms. Spatial dependence of P. perna variability increased with spatial dependence of topographic variability, so that scaling regions of mussel and topographic distributions corresponded well. This relationship often improved with larger local scales (mussel cover increased with depressions, steeper slope and aspect towards waves), while at smaller spatial scales, variability in mussel cover was less well explained by variability in topography. The variability of the barnacle O. angulosa exhibited spatial dependence, even on topographically unstructured shores. In contrast, the distribution of the alga G. pristoides revealed high fractal dimensions, showing spatial independence on topographically unstructured shores. Algae also showed a very strong negative relationship with mussels at most local scales, and a negative relationship with barnacles in upper zones, especially at larger local scales. Barnacles may show clear spatial dependence because of hydrodynamics (at larger local scales) and the need to find a future mate in close proximity (at smaller local scales), while algae may show a strong negative relationship with mussels because of competition for space.  相似文献

The introduced mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis is progressively increasing in abundance along the south coast of South Africa. Quantitative 0.1 m2 samples were collected in the mid-zone of an indigenous Perna perna mussel bed in the 1980s prior to the arrival M. galloprovincialis (12) and in the 2000s during the M. galloprovincialis invasion (16). In addition, in situ counts of M. galloprovincialis were done on eight occasions between 1993 and 2005, and in the low- and high-zones on four occasions. In the mid-zone M. galloprovincialis was absent until 1987, its mean densities were low (< 15 individuals/0.1 m2) between 1993 and 1996, but thereafter increased steadily, peaking in 2004 (at 721 individuals/0.1 m2), before declining in 2005 (331 individuals/0.1 m2). The greatest densities of M. galloprovincialis were recorded at the high-zone (1121 individuals/0.1 m2) and the smallest in the low-zone. As M. galloprovincialis numbers increased, there was an associated, but smaller decline in P. perna numbers and the overall density of mussels increased significantly (P < 0.05). No major change was recorded in the size composition of P. perna. The density of associated fauna differed significantly (P < 0.01) between sampling dates with the lowest and highest values being recorded near the ‘beginning’ (2001) and ‘end’ (2005) of the invasion period respectively. These differences were largely due to variations in the density of barnacles, and the toothed barnacle Chthamalus dentatus appeared to be the only associated faunal species that was directly affected by the M. galloprovincialis invasion, experiencing a significantly (P ≤ 0.05), but temporary decline in density and biomass values.  相似文献

One of the predicted consequences of climate change is an increase in the occurrence of extreme rainfall and a subsequent increase in frequency of high flow events in rivers. High flow events have the potential to impact estuarine communities like mussel assemblages due to decreased salinity and/or the transport of sediments, organic matter and nutrients from the terrestrial environment to the estuary. The impact of two high flow events was investigated using mussels located within the Conwy estuary, North Wales, using the ‘Beyond BACI’ approach. Three study sites were chosen, the potentially impacted site (Conwy) and two control sites located outside the estuary. Sampling took place over 18 months with samples being collected before and after each event. On each sampling occasion, the following data were collected: the total haemocyte count (THC) and condition index (CI) of the mussels and the diversity (Hloge) of their associated macrofauna. A significant effect of the first event (22nd October 2004) was found on the CI of the Conwy mussels, whereas a significant effect of the second event (10th October 2005) was found on mussel THC. No effect of either event was found on the diversity of the associated fauna. The results of this study suggest that any increase in the number or intensity of heavy precipitation or high flow events have potential implications for the health and resilience of estuarine mussel populations.
