We have reviewed 43 studies related to dendroclimatology in Kazakhstan, and additionally 13 studies related to other subfields of dendrochronology, which have been published during the past 40 years. This review also includes studies published in Russian, Kazakh, German and Chinese languages, which are not easily accessible to international researchers.Dendroclimatic studies in Kazakhstan began back in the days of the Soviet Union and were actively conducted in the southern and northern parts of the country. With the collapse of the Soviet Union dendroclimatic studies stopped and resumed only 15-20 years later. Within the last 5 years, the intensity and quality of dendroclimatic studies increased significantly. Several research groups have investigated climate-growth relationships of Scots pine, Silver birch, Siberian larch, Siever’s apple and Schrenk spruce. Schrenk spruce was the most widely studied of these species, and several climatic reconstructions have been published based off their climate-growth relationships. Results of most studies on Schrenk spruce demonstrated good consistency, allowing the general patterns of climate-growth relationships to be accurately traced. Unfortunately, studies on other tree species have either lower level or represented just by one or two studies. It would therefore be premature to make any generalizations on these species at the current stage.We conclude that there is a good potential and good base for continuing dendroclimatic studies in Kazakhstan. There is a need to close several research gaps which limit our knowledge, such as chronologies’ length, application of new methods, species composition and spatial coverage. Closing these gaps let us significantly improve the dendrochronological network of Kazakhstan and provide important data for further hydrological and climate studies in Kazakhstan.  相似文献

The Madjars are a previously unstudied population from Kazakhstan who practice a form of local exogamy in which wives are brought in from neighboring tribes, but husbands are not, so the paternal lineages remain genetically isolated within the population. Their name bears a striking resemblance to the Magyars who have inhabited Hungary for over a millennium, but whose previous history is poorly understood. We have now carried out a genetic analysis of the population structure and relationships of the Madjars, and in particular have sought to test whether or not they show a genetic link with the Magyars. We concentrated on paternal lineages because of their isolation within the Madjars and sampled males representing all extant male lineages unrelated for more than eight generations (n = 45) in the Torgay area of Kazakhstan. The Madjars show evidence of extensive genetic drift, with 24/45 carrying the same 12‐STR haplotype within haplogroup G. Genetic distances based on haplogroup frequencies were used to compare the Madjars with 37 other populations and showed that they were closest to the Hungarian population rather than their geographical neighbors. Although this finding could result from chance, it is striking and suggests that there could have been genetic contact between the ancestors of the Madjars and Magyars, and thus that modern Hungarians may trace their ancestry to Central Asia, instead of the Eastern Uralic region as previously thought. Habitat associations and distribution of breeding Sociable Lapwings were examined in 2004–2008 in central Kazakhstan to develop and assess hypotheses relating to the species' decline and high conservation threat status. At a landscape scale, breeding colonies were strongly positively associated with villages and rivers. Habitat suitability models had very high predictive power and suggested that only 6.6–8.0% of the 30 000-km2 study area was potentially suitable for Sociable Lapwings. Models developed to describe the spatial distribution of nests in one region of Kazakhstan in one year predicted well the distribution of nests in another region, suggesting good generality. At a colony scale, nests were most likely to be found in the most heavily grazed areas, with a high cover of animal dung and bare ground. Despite the low density of human settlements in the study area, most Sociable Lapwing nests were < 2 km from a village. Patterns of grazing were assessed by fitting GPS loggers to cattle. There was a strong positive correlation around villages between grazing intensity and the density of Sociable Lapwing nests, with clear evidence of a threshold of grazing density that needs to be reached before birds will breed. This high degree of synanthropy, perhaps unique in a critically endangered bird, is likely to result from post-Soviet changes in steppe management and offers both threats and opportunities to the species' conservation.  相似文献

This paper analyses Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan as nationalizing states, focusing on four domains: ethnopolitical demography, language repertoires and practices, the polity and the economy. Nationalizing discourse has figured centrally in these and other ‘post-multinational’ contexts. But nationalizing projects and processes have differed substantially across cases. Where ethnonational boundaries have been strong, quasi-racial and intergenerationally persistent, as in Kazakhstan, nationalization (notwithstanding inclusive official rhetoric) has served primarily to strengthen and empower the core nation. Where ethnonational and linguistic boundaries have been blurred and permeable, as in Ukraine, nationalization has worked primarily to reshape cultural practices, loyalties and identities, thereby in effect redefining and enlarging the core nation. Where boundaries have been strong, yet show signs of being intergenerationally permeable, as in Estonia and Latvia, nationalization was initially oriented towards protecting, strengthening, and empowering the core nation as a sharply bounded collectivity, but has subsequently become more assimilationist and culturalist.  相似文献

The composition and distribution of the species of the genus Scalaspira Conrad, 1862 in the Eocene-Oligocene of western Kazakhstan are revised. Following Tembrock we assign this genus to Buccinidae and synonymize Aquilofusus Kautsky, 1925 with it. The stratigraphic interval studied contains at least eight species. Three species are new: S. alexeevi (Middle? and Upper Eocene, Chegan Formation), S. korobkovi, and S. kumsuatensis (Upper Oligocene, Karatomak Beds).  相似文献

The topic of abortion has been extensively researched, and the research has produced a large number of arguments and discussions. Missing in the literature, however, are discussions of practices in some areas of the Developing or Third World. In this paper, we examine the morality of sex selection abortions in Kazakhstan's Kazakh culture, and argue that such abortions can be ethically justified based, in part, on the unique perspectives of Kazakh culture.  相似文献

Pohlsepia mazonensis gen. et sp. nov. from the Mazon Creek Konservat Lagersta¨tte (Carboniferous) of Illinois is an exceptionally preserved soft-bodied fossil coleoid, with well-defined body and arms. Lacking an internal shell and possessing eight subequal and two modified arms, Pohlsepia can be compared with both the living cirrate octopods and the decabrachian sepiardarids, both of which lack a well-developed internal skeleton. Given its sac-like body, lack of a well-defined head and presence of fins, Pohlsepia can be safely compared with modern cirrate octopods. It is the oldest known completely soft-bodied coleoid and as such has great significance with respect to the phylogeny of the group, given that both the octobrachian and decabrachian clades have previously been thought to have evolved in the Jurassic. A computer-based parsimony analysis of the brachiopod genus Orbirhynchia (Late Albian–Middle Campanian) is described. The resulting cladogram indicates that the genus divided into two distinct lineages soon after its appearance in the Late Albian. One group is known only from marly and sandy facies of Cenomanian age, while the second, more diverse, group appeared later in the Cenomanian but persisted into the Campanian. These two groups exhibit distinct morphological trends which may be related to different ecological niches, perhaps with respect to local sedimentary environment. Summary DNA fingerprinting of nestlings ofFalco cherrug was used to determine indirectly the survival of the corresponding adult parent birds, which are difficult to catch in sufficient numbers. This approach is possible because Saker falcons show a high degree of site and mate tenacity. DNA profiles of nestlings from the same territory but from different years were compared. Three patterns of band-sharing coefficients between broods from the same territory were found: if band-sharing coefficients within and between broods from consecutive years were similar but significantly different from those of unrelated birds, it indicated that all young were full sibs and that neither adult was replaced between years. If band-sharing coefficients between broods at the same site indicated no relatedness across years and were equal to those of unrelated birds, then both breeding partners apparently had changed. If the band-sharing coefficients between broods of the same territory and consecutive years were significantly lower than those of full sibs, but higher than those of unrelated birds, the loss of one adult bird was indicated. The analysis of 32 broods (years 1993 to 1997) provided a minimal estimate for annual adult survival of 82% for a wild population of Saker Falcons in Kazakhstan.
Abschätzung der jährlichen Überlebensraten des Sakerfalken(Falco cherrug) mittels DNA-Fingerprinting
Zusammenfassung Um die Gefährdung und Populationsdynamik des Sakerfalken (Falco cherrug) beurteilen zu können, benötigen wir genaue Angaben zu Mortalität und Überlebensraten. Während es bei dieser Art relativ einfach ist, Nestlinge zu fangen, ist es nahezu unmöglich, eine ausreichend große Zahl an Altvögeln zu markieren, um durch Wiederfang oder Ringfundmeldungen die jährliche Überlebensrate zu ermitteln. Durch DNA-Fingerprinting von Jungfalken haben wir versucht, die minimale Überlebensrate von Altfalken indirekt zu bestimmen. Dieser Forschungsansatz wird dadurch möglich, daß die Sakerfalken eine hohe Philopatrie aufweisen und jedes Jahr im selben Revier brüten. Wenn man mehrere Jahre lang Blutproben der Jungvögel aus denselben Revieren sammelt, so kann man mittels DNA Fingerprinting indirekt ermitteln, ob die jeweiligen Altvögel identisch waren oder gewechselt haben: Vergleicht man die Band-Sharing-Koeffizienten (BSK) von Jungvögeln von zwei oder mehr Jahren aus demselben Revier, so ergeben sich drei Muster: Wenn die BSK-Werte innerhalb der Bruten und zwischen den Bruten identisch aber signifikant verschieden von denen nicht verwandter Vögel sind, so handelt es sich bei den Jungvögeln um Vollgeschwister; demnach sind die Altvögel identisch geblieben, d. h. sie haben von einem Jahr zum nächsten überlebt. Wenn die BSK-Werte zwischen zwei Bruten aus demselben Revier einen Wert annehmen, wie man ihn für unverwandte Tiere ermittelt, so müssen die Eltern gewechselt haben. Liegen die Werte zwischen zwei Bruten signifikant höher als die von nicht verwandten Tieren, aber niedriger als diejenigen von Vollgeschwistern, so ist vermutlich 1 Altvogel gewechselt worden. Die Analyse von 32 Bruten des Sakerfalken aus Kasachstan zeigt, daß die minimale jährliche Adultüberlebensrate bei 82% liegt.

This article argues against scholarship that views barter and monetized transactions as fundamentally similar practices of exchange. Drawing on an ethnography of small-holder mobile pastoralism in south Kazakhstan, I compare instances in which flock owners chose to sell sheep with examples of barter and explain the calculations behind each choice. In barter exchange, sheep replaced money as both medium of exchange and store of value and the material qualities of sheep meant this shift had profound consequences for the kinds of social relations associated with the transaction. In a context of chronic money shortages, barter of sheep freed participants from future obligations, while monetized exchange locked them into the most prolonged and risky of relations.  相似文献
