It is widely believed that, when extrinsic conditions are similar, the likelihood of species invading established assemblages decreases with increasing species richness of the recipient community. Here we show that, for a sessile marine invertebrate community, invasion of patches increases with richness of the patch. We show that invasions can increase with local species richness by two distinct mechanisms. In the first, opportunistic colonisers with traits typical of invasive species colonise species-rich patches at higher rates because speciose patches are dominated by small colonies and mortality rates of small colonies are greater than that of large ones. Thus, mortality provides bare space for opportunists to colonise more frequently in species-rich patches. In the second, some species avoid colonising open areas of free space but preferentially associate with established colonies of particular other species, and a given preferred associate is more likely to occur in species-rich than in species-poor patches. These patterns are the result of particular properties of individual species and local species dynamics, and show that reduced risk of invasion is not necessarily an intrinsic property of species-rich communities. We conclude that resistance to invasion will be determined by the properties of the particular component species and emergent dynamics of the recipient community, and not by an aggregate community property such as richness. 相似文献

One of the central goals of mathematical epidemiology is to predict disease transmission patterns in populations. Two models are commonly used to predict spatial spread of a disease. The first is the distributed-contacts model, often described by a contact distribution among stationary individuals. The second is the distributed-infectives model, often described by the diffusion of infected individuals. However, neither approach is ideal when individuals move within home ranges. This paper presents a unified modeling hypothesis, called the restricted-movement model. We use this model to predict spatial spread in settings where infected individuals move within overlapping home ranges. Using mathematical and computational approaches, we show that our restricted-movement model has three limits: the distributed-contacts model, the distributed-infectives model, and a third, less studied advective distributed-infectives limit. We also calculate approximate upper bounds for the rates of an epidemic's spatial spread. Guidelines are suggested for determining which limit is most appropriate for a specific disease. 相似文献

Positive interactions among native plant species are common in alpine habitats, particularly those where one species (nurse plant) generates microclimatic conditions that are more benign than the surrounding environment, facilitating the establishment of other species. Nonetheless, these microclimatic conditions could facilitate the establishment of non-native species as well. A conspicuous component of the alien alpine flora of the central Chilean Andes is the perennial herb Taraxacum officinale agg. (dandelion). In contrast to other alien species that are restricted to human-disturbed sites, T. officinale is frequently observed growing within native plant communities dominated by cushion plants. In this study we evaluated if T. officinale is positively associated with the cushion plant Azorella monantha. Via seedling survival experiments and gas-exchange measurements we also assessed the patterns of facilitation between cushions and dandelions, and explore the potential mechanisms of invasion by dandelions. T. officinale grows spatially positively associated with cushions of A. monantha. Survival of seedlings, as well as their net-photosynthetic rates and stomatal conductance, were higher within cushions than in open areas away from them, suggesting that the microclimatic modifications generated by this native cushion facilitates the establishment and performance of a non-native invasive species. Our results, as well as other recent studies, highlight the role of native communities in facilitating rather than constraining non-native plant invasions, particularly in stressful habitats such as alpine environments. 相似文献

The threat to biodiversity due to invasive alien species is considered second only to that of habitat loss. Given the large
number of species that are currently invading ecosystems all over the world, we need to distinguish invaders with minor effects
from those with large effects in order to prioritize management efforts. Ecological niche models can be used to predict the
potential distribution of an invasive species from occurrence records and environmental data layers. We used the Ecological
Niche Factor Analysis (ENFA), a presence-only predictive modelling approach, to describe the invasive ring-necked parakeets’
realized niche and to identify areas suitable for the parakeet in northern Belgium. ENFA proved to be a robust and reliable
modelling technique, able to gauge the ecological requirements of an invasive species without the need to include historical
information on the starting point of the invasion. ENFA shows that the parakeets tend to occupy relatively rare habitats compared
to the main environmental conditions in northern Belgium, although they show some tolerance for environmental conditions inside
parks and forests. The general distribution of the ring-necked parakeet is governed primarily by the amount of older forest
patches, parks and built-up area in the landscape—reflecting the parakeets’ need for suitable nesting cavities and its reliance
upon urban areas to forage. Our resulting habitat suitability maps show that the parakeets have ample room to further increase
their range in northern Belgium. Our results indicate some concern for increased competition between parakeets and the nuthatches,
native cavity nesters known to suffer from competition with parakeets, as some regions known as nuthatch strongholds are highly
likely to be invaded by the parakeets. 相似文献

We examined the diet of the alien Nile tilapia and bluegill, redear sunfish, and largemouth bass over a two-year period in coastal Mississippi. Nile tilapia diet was visually separated from the three natives based on group-average linkage cluster analysis. Sequential two-way nested analysis of similarities indicted there was no season effect (Global R = 0.026, P = 24.3%), but there was a moderate size class effect (Global R = 0.457, P = 0.1%) and a strong species effect (Global R = 0.876, P = 0.1%). Pairwise tests indicated species fed on different components of and locations within the environment, with bluegill, redear sunfish and largemouth bass (all R ≤ 0.683, P = 0.1%) having the most similar dietary components and Nile tilapia (all R ≥ 0.953, P = 0.1%) having the most distinct. Multivariate dispersion indicated that largemouth bass (1.425) and bluegill (1.394) had the most diverse diets compared to redear sunfish (0.906) and Nile tilapia (0.918). Similarities of percentages indicated that diets were separated based on prey: bluegill and redear sunfish consumed chironomids and insects; largemouth bass consumed fish and insects; and Nile tilapia fed most often on sediment resources such as nematodes, rotifers, bryozoans and hydrozoans. Nile tilapia had the highest frequency of mud, sand and detritus in their stomachs, suggesting they fed directly on bottom sediments. These data and the fact that Nile tilapia has a 1.3–7.6 times longer intestine on average than its body length, support our contention that this alien species feeds at the base of the food web and is well adapted to survive and proliferate in non-native environments. 相似文献

In theory and practice, many ecological communities possessing a stable coexistence steady state may, in actuality, be difficult to assemble species-by-species, due to temporarily low densities of one or more preexisting species after the introduction of a new community member. This article elucidates some of the conditions under which these transient near-extinctions are likely to occur. These conditions are given in terms of such geometric quantities as the position of the new coexistence state after an invasion, relative to the original coexistence state, and the severity of the post-invasion community’s oscillations, as well as more directly biological quantities such as the demographic rates of the invader and the potential victim of a crash. Through graphical reasoning, numerical examples, and preliminary experimental results, the importance of these conditions is demonstrated. 相似文献

Seed weight, percentage germination, seedling growth, and nutrient concentrations (Mg, Na, K, Zn, Cu and P) of whole seeds, and of seed coats and embryos separately of two tree species, the native Prosopis cineraria and the invasive alien P. juliflora from semi-arid and arid areas of north and north-west India, were analysed to understand the differences in their ecology. Seeds of P. cineraria were heavier than those of P. juliflora. Percent germination was similar in the two species, but seedling growth was faster in P. juliflora than in P. cineraria. Nutrient concentrations of seeds of the two species were similar (except Cu). Nutrient concentrations in the embryo were higher in P. cineraria, while those in the seed coat were higher in P. juliflora. The relative allocation of nutrients to seed coat was higher in P. juliflora than in P. cineraria. Nutrient-rich embryos and slow growth, along with a staggered seed germination pattern in the native P. cineraria could be linked to delayed establishment as well, in the substratum. Faster growth of the nutrient-poor embryos in P. juliflora along with its simultaneous seed germination pattern, and creation of a favourable microenvironment through leaching of nutrients from a nutrient-rich seed coat can facilitate immediate and successful establishment of this alien species in the invaded habitats. 相似文献

The niches invaded by exotic species are generally not entirely vacant, and one possible factor affecting the success of the
invader to establish a permanent large population may be the ability of the former to outcompete native species. Eudiaptomus gracilis, which was not present in Italy before the 1980s, is becoming established in an increasing number of Northern Italian lakes,
ultimately replacing the endemic E. padanus. Coexistence of the two species in Lake Candia lasted only 7 months, suggesting that species replacement was determined either
by environmental changes or by strong competition. To assess whether the potential for interspecific competition existed and
to identify species' traits which could explain the competitive superiority of E. gracilis, we examined field seasonal patterns, reproductive parameters and body size of the two species. E. padanus abundance was probably reduced by predation and parasitism, which favoured the displacement of the species shortly after
invasion by E. gracilis. The temporarily underexploited niche provided an opportunity for the successful establishment of the invader. The reproductive
patterns of the two species were found to be similar in most of their features, with the exception of a markedly larger clutch
size and a smaller egg volume in the resident species. By contrast, the invader showed a higher adult:egg ratio and a lower
death rate. Thus, despite the greater fecundity of E. padanus, the competitive success of the invader might be attributable to interspecific differences in developmental rates and/or
juvenile mortality. 相似文献

The ability of predators to control the abundance of non-native species has been little explored in marine systems. Native predators may be used to control non-native species or may confer invasion resistance to communities if predation rates on invaders are density-dependent. We studied the response of southern California native predators to the density of Musculista senhousia (Benson in Cantor, 1842), a small, fast growing mussel that has been introduced from Japan to several coastlines worldwide. We performed field experiments to determine if M. senhousia proportional mortality is density-dependent and if eelgrass Zostera marina L. habitat structure influenced mussel density-dependent mortality. We also evaluated the effect of seagrass habitat structure on the aggregative and functional responses of the predatory gastropod Pteropurpura festiva (Hinds, 1844) to Asian mussel density. In the summer of 2002, P. festiva aggregated in plots with high mussel density and was responsible for nearly all predation on M. senhousia. However, M. senhousia proportional mortality was inversely density-dependent at all levels of eelgrass above-ground and below-ground habitat structure. Asian mussel proportional mortality also was inversely density-dependent and was not influenced by eelgrass habitat structure in the spring of 2004 when wading birds were the chief predator of mussels. In contrast to results for mussel proportional mortality, the aggregative and functional responses of P. festiva varied with seagrass habitat structure. P. festiva density increased with Asian mussel density in plots with low simulated habitat structure, but the relationship between P. festiva density and Asian mussel density was parabolic at zero, intermediate and high levels of habitat structure. In field enclosures, P. festiva exhibited a Type I (linear) functional response to Asian mussel density at low levels of eelgrass structure, and a Type II (hyperbolic) functional response to mussel density at high levels of eelgrass structure. Our results and those of others suggest that the degree to which local benthic communities in southern California are resistant to Asian mussel invasion depends on habitat structure, mussel settlement rates, and the density and diversity of predators. 相似文献

Clonal analysis of the Arabidopsis root confirms that position, not lineage, determines cell fate 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The cellular organization of the Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. root meristem suggests that a regular pattern of cell divisions occurs in the root tip. Deviations from
this pattern of division might be expected to disrupt the organization of cells and tissues in the root. A clonal analysis
of the 3-d-old primary root meristem was carried out to determine if there is variability in division patterns, and if so
to discover their effect on cellular organization in the root. Clones induced in the seedling meristem largely confirmed the
predicted pattern of cell divisions. However, the cellular initials that normally give rise to the different cell files in
the root were shown to exhibit some instability. For example, it was calculated that a lateral root cap/epidermal initial
is displaced every 13 d. Furthermore, the existence of large marked clones that included more than two adjacent cell layers
suggests that intrusive growth followed by cell division may occur at low frequency, perhaps in response to local cell deaths
in the meristem. These findings support the view that even in plant organs with stereotypical cell division patterns, positional
information is still the key determinant of cell fate.
