Sexual system, temporal variation in sex expression, and herkogamy were evaluated in 210 plant species in the Venezuelan Central Plain (VCP). This analysis was conducted considering the life forms, habitats, flowering time, pollination systems, and dispersal syndromes of the plant species. Hermaphrodite species dominated the community (75.2%; N=158), followed by monoecious taxa (17.1%; N=36), and then dioecious (7.6; N=16). Most species were adichogamous (=homogamous) (75.2%; N=155), followed by protandrous (16.5%; N=34), and protogynous (8.3%; N=17). The frequency of herkogamous species was higher (N=124; 60.2%) than the non-herkogamous (N=82; 39.8%). The three reproductive traits interacted significantly in a way that complements their effectiveness in promoting cross-pollination and avoidance of pollen–stigma interference: hermaphrodite-adichogamous species occurred in similar frequency to herkogamous and non-herkogamous species; monoecious-adichogamous species were mostly herkogamous, and all hermaphrodite, functionally dioecious-adichogamous, species were herkogamous. Sexual system, herkogamy, and dichogamy are associated with habitats in the savanna-forest mosaic of the VCP. The proportion of dioecious species decreased from trees to annual herbs and from forest to disturbed areas. Dichogamous species were most frequent for herbaceous plants, and non-herkogamous species dominated in annual herbs. The frequency of herkogamous species decreased from forest to disturbed areas. Sexual system was significantly associated with pollination system. Most dioecious and monoecious species had generalist pollination. A three-factor log linear analysis indicated that for any combination significantly. Sexual systems and herkogamy were associated with the respective seed dispersal syndrome. Most dioecious and herkogamous species were dispersed by frugivores, while monoecious plants tended to be dispersed by granivores and wind. Flowering time of dioecious species peaked during the dry–rainy transition period, whereas that of monoecious species was greatest during the rainy season. Therefore, specific biotic and abiotic conditions may enforce the occurrence of unisexuality in the community. In a similar way, dichogamous species tend to flower during the rainy season, associated with herbaceous life form and wind pollination. These results are discussed in the context of evolutionary and ecological trends.  相似文献

It has profound implications for species invasions and fitness, how weeds achieve reproductive success. We present the first study on the reproductive biology of Stellera chamaejasme, a toxic perennial weed which is abundant in the alpine meadows on the eastern Tibetan Plateau of China since the 1960s. S. chamaejasme has synchronogamy and herkogamous flowers, which last for about 11 days. Flowers can be yellow, white or reddish. Our results suggest that this species is self-incompatible and depends entirely on pollen vectors for seed production. All the pollinators observed were Lepidopteran species; however, the pollinator assemblage was significantly different among populations and likely independent on floral colour. Reproductive success and invasion of the weed might be a complex function of floral traits, breeding system and pollination ecology. Generally, plants with generalized pollination system are more invasive. However, our results suggest that specialized flowers and self-incompatibility in the present case may not prevent invasion of the weed.  相似文献

Outcrossing rates varied from 0% to 69% among Jamaican populations of Turnera ulmifolia. A correlation between increasing herkogamy and outcrossing rate occurred among populations. Predictions from sex-allocation theory were tested by estimating allocation to reproductive functions. Significant differences in allocation patterns occurred among populations, but they were not correlated with outcrossing rates. The fitness consequences of inbreeding were assessed in high- and low-density greenhouse experiments for nine populations with variable outcrossing rates. No evidence for inbreeding depression occurred in early portions of the life history, but multiplicative fitness functions provide evidence for inbreeding depression. We tested the prediction that selfing populations have lower levels of inbreeding depression than outcrossing populations but found no significant correlation.  相似文献

Plant-pollinator interactions promote the evolution of floral traits that attract pollinators and facilitate efficient pollen transfer. The spatial separation of sex organs, herkogamy, is believed to limit sexual interference in hermaphrodite flowers. Reverse herkogamy (stigma recessed below anthers) and long, narrow corolla tubes are expected to promote efficiency in male function under hawkmoth pollination. We tested this prediction by measuring selection in six experimental arrays of Polemonium brandegeei, a species that displays continuous variation in herkogamy, resulting in a range of recessed to exserted stigmas. Under glasshouse conditions, we measured pollen removal and deposition, and estimated selection gradients (β) through female fitness (seeds set) and male fitness (siring success based on six polymorphic microsatellite loci). Siring success was higher in plants with more nectar sugar and narrow corolla tubes. However, selection through female function for reverse herkogamy was considerably stronger than was selection through male function. Hawkmoths were initially attracted to larger flowers, but overall preferred plants with reverse herkogamy. Greater pollen deposition and seed set also occurred in reverse herkogamous plants. Thus, reverse herkogamy may be maintained by hawkmoths through female rather than male function. Further, our results suggest that pollinator attraction may play a considerable role in enhancing female function.  相似文献

Theoretical studies show that, although inbreeding depression (ID) will counterbalance the transmission advantage of selfing, it can only maintain a mixed mating system in plants when at least one of the following two conditions is met: (1) there is a positive association between selfing rates and the level of ID; and (2) ID is greater than 0.5 for the female component of fitness, while the average ID for male and female fitness is less than 0.5. This study tests whether these two conditions hold in the common morning glory, Ipomoea purpurea, which has a mixed mating system with 30% self-fertilization. Inbreeding depression was found in all but one fitness component measured in two groups of plants with distinct anther-stigma distances (ASD), a character that influences selfing rates. However, when examined separately, a negative association was found between selfing rates and ID; plants with large ASD (low-selfing-rate genotypes) tended to have higher ID than ones with small ASD (high-selfing-rate genotypes). Furthermore, the overall lifetime ID for male (12.5%) and female (24%) components of fitness, averaged across two ASD groups, were lower than what is necessary for ID to maintain an evolutionarily stable mixed mating system. Therefore, although inbreeding depression contributes to balancing the transmission advantage of selfing, it is not likely to be the primary mechanism maintaining the mixed mating system of I. purpurea. Herkogamy and gynodioecy were studied in the Moroccan species ofRomulea. Several types of herkogamy are shown to occur in the different species, with each type corresponding to a characteristic perianth size. The degree of differentiation between female and hermaphrodite morphs varies among the different gynodioecious species. Herkogamy is considered to have evolved prior to the development of the gynodioecious condition. An evolutionary interpretation is proposed based on the degree of herkogamy and of gynodioecy in the different species.  相似文献

Protogyny is supposed to represent the ancestral form of dichogamy in the angiosperms, but is rare in advanced groups such as the Asteridae, in which protandry prevails by far. Here we report on an unusual form of protogyny combined with herkogamy in a Chinese species of Gesneriaceae (Asteridae–Lamiales): Oreocharis acaulis (formerly Opithandra acaulis). This is characterized by a conspicuous protrusion of the style from the flower bud and the stigma becoming receptive before corolla opening (female-only stage; preanthetic protogyny) and both sexes staying functional during anthesis (hermaphroditic stage), with the stigma presented above the anther level (approach herkogamy). The plants studied were found to be self-compatible, but autonomous self-pollination and apomixis were not observed. Successful pollination was found to depend fully on the presence of insect pollinators (Bombus sp.). The visiting frequency was higher in the hermaphroditic stage (in which also more nectar was produced) than in the female-only stage. The out-crossed flower buds opened earlier and had a shorter flowering period than selfed flowers. Similarly, the outcross-pollen germinated earlier and the pollen tube growth was faster than in self-pollen. Anthers, pistil and corolla of O. acaulis obviously form an integrative functional unit in which the elongated style plays a key role both in pollen-dispensing and pollen-deposition. The combination of preanthetic protogyny with herkogamy has probably arisen through selection for promoting out-crossing and prolonging the exposition time of the receptive stigma in order to capture a higher amount of pollen grains. This may be understood as a strategy to cope with scarcity of pollinators in the plants’ habitat.  相似文献

雌雄异位和花部行为影响植物的传粉和交配格局。二者的适应意义一直是植物生殖生态学和进化生物学研究的热点之一。该文概述了近年来雌雄异位和花部行为适应意义的研究进展,包括对雌雄异位适应意义的最早期、最传统的认识——避免自交和当前的主流观点——避免雌雄干扰;花内性别干扰的形式及其例证;花部行为在避免雌雄功能干扰、避免自交、实现延迟自交、应对不良环境等方面的适应意义。讨论了使雌雄异位程度减小的锦葵科一些植物中的单体雄蕊柱头运动可能涉及到的适应意义。针对目前在雌雄异位和花部行为适应意义研究上存在的不足,结合国际上研究二者适应意义的发展趋势正在从前期以描述性的研究为主转变到应用现代分子生物学手段(尤其是分子标记,如SSR、SNP、AFLP等)和传统方法相结合,以及随着田间实验和控制条件能力的发展正由经典的野外调查、观察为主过渡到包括花操纵在内的人工试验和野外试验相结合,提出了今后研究中应注意的问题。有必要借用多学科的手段,以可作为研究雌雄异位和花部行为的有着研究基础的植物为材料,设计和操纵不同的对比试验,系统而深入地探讨雌雄异位和花部行为的适应意义。  相似文献

In spite of their tiny dimensions (3×5 mm2), the strongly honey-scented flowers of Guazuma ulmifolia (Malvaceae–Byttnerioideae) provide six sexual chambers. A central female unit is surrounded by five interconnected male compartments. At the onset of anthesis the strap-shaped odoriferous petal appendages form an open star with the female chamber in the centre. Hereafter, they wilt, intermingle and finally lock access to the stigma. Meanwhile, wilting sepals liberate new entrances from the back between the petal claws. They give way to nectar-offering male chambers. In each of them a well-lit (but closed) window lures the visitor into a standard position for passive pollen uptake. Finally, the insects have to back out of one of the rear entrances. It remains unknown how the minute visitors (maximum height ca. 0.5 mm) – if ever – overcome the distance to another Guazuma tree.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of stigma-anther separation (SAS) in flowers of the self-incompatible tropical tree Ipomoea wolcottiana (Convolvulaceae). We measured the deposition of self pollen on the stigma and the growth of pollen tubes. We also evaluated phenotypic selection on female fertility using univariate regressions of SAS with fruit production. SAS varied among individuals in two years, with a range of 0–6 mm. There was a negative correlation between SAS and the number of self pollen grains on the stigma; trees with SAS of 0–2 mm received averages of ca 80–130 self grains. The effect of loading the stigma with self-pollen was tested by allowing isolated flowers to self-pollinate, then cross-pollinating by hand: there was a negative correlation between the pollen load and the proportion of grains forming pollen tubes. The highest proportion of grains forming tubes was found with loads of <10 grains, while the minimum frequency of tubes occurred with loads of >50 grains. The results suggest that more self pollen deposition leads to fewer tubes from outcross pollen. There was a significant effect of SAS on fruit production in both years. The analyses suggested stabilizing selection; very small SAS is disadvantageous due to the high load of self pollen, while very large SAS probably led to damage to the style during pollinator visits. We suggest that herkogamy may be a key character for determining the success of fruit production in self-incompatible hermaphroditic species.  相似文献
