Rhythms of fragrance emission in flowers   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
A method for the sampling of volatiles emitted by individual flowers is described. Sampling over periods of 3 h allowed the examination of diurnal changes in quantity and quality of fragrance. In the species studied, Odontoglossum constrictum Lindl., Citrus medica L., Hoya carnosa R. Br., and Stephanotis floribunda Brongs., the fragrance was characterized by a few major components accompanied by a larger number of minor components. Flowers of all species produced volatiles in a rhythmical, diurnal fashion. Whereas in detached flowers of O. constrictum and C. medica rhythmicity could be observed for up to four cycles, flowers of H. carnosa showed this phenomenon only when attached to the plant. Maxima of emission were observed during the day in C. medica and O. constrictum whereas in H. carnosa it occurred during the night. In S. floribunda a conspicuous asynchronism of the emission of different volatiles was observed, resulting in the rhythmical change of fragrance quality.  相似文献

Several chemical constituents are important to the fragrance of cooked rice. However, the chemical compound 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (AP) is regarded as the most important component of fragrance in the basmati- and jasmine-style fragrant rices. AP is found in all parts of the plant except the roots. It is believed that a single recessive gene is responsible for the production of fragrance in most rice plants. The detection of fragrance can be carried out via sensory or chemical methods, although each has their disadvantages. To overcome these difficulties, we have identified an (AT)40 repeat microsatellite or simple sequence repeat (SSR) marker for fragrant and non-fragrant alleles of the fgr gene. Identification of this marker was facilitated through use of both the publicly available and restricted access sequence information of the Monsanto rice sequence databases. Fifty F2 individuals from a mapping population were genotyped for the polymorphic marker. This marker has a high polymorphism information content (PIC = 0.9). Other SSR markers linked to fragrance could be identified in the same way of use in other populations. This study demonstrates that analysis of the rice genome sequence is an effective option for identification of markers for use in rice improvement.  相似文献

The now famous virgin headspace experiment from late Braja D. Mookherjee and Subha Patel, and its use in the creation of scent 'Virgin No 1' by Christophe Laudamiel and Christoph Hornetz for the novel by Patrick Süskind, and the movie by Tom Tykwer 'Perfume--The Story of a Murderer' (Constantin Film-Thierry Mugler Parfums-IFF, 2006) is discussed. Another fragrance from the luxury coffret, 'Salon Rouge', is described as well, illustrating how molecules and natural ingredients can be utilized, not only to create innovative or artistic fragrance compositions, but also to provide fundamental consumer education, improving the public image both of Chemistry and Perfumery.  相似文献

Rust fungi are obligate biotrophic pathogens that differentiate a series of specialized cells to establish infection. One of these cells, the haustorium, which serves to absorb nutrients from living host cells, normally develops only in planta. Here, we show that the rust fungus Uromyces fabae (Pers.) Schroet. stimulates volatile emission of its host, broad bean (Vicia faba L.). Volatiles were identified and shown to be perceived by the fungus in in vitro assays that excluded the host. Three of them, nonanal, decanal, and hexenyl acetate promoted the development of haustoria on artificial membranes. In contrast, the terpenoid farnesyl acetate suppressed this differentiation. In assays using whole plants, farnesyl acetate reduced rust disease not only on broad bean but also on several cereals and legumes including soybean. This natural substance was effective against all rusts tested when directly applied to the host. This demonstrated that farnesyl acetate may serve as a powerful novel tool to combat rust fungi including Phakopsora pachyrhizi that currently threatens the production of soybeans world-wide.  相似文献

Baeyer-Villiger monooxygenases (BVMOs) are presented as highly selective and efficient biocatalysts for the synthesis of aroma lactones via kinetic resolution of 2-substituted cycloketones, exemplified with two δ-valerolactones, the jasmine lactones and their ε-caprolactone homologs. Analytical scale screens of our BVMO library ensued by preparative whole-cell biotransformations led to the identification of two enzymes (cyclohexanone monooxygenase from Arthrobacter BP2 and cyclododecanone monooxygenase from Rhodococcus SC1) perfectly suited for the task at hand: easily accessible racemic starting materials were bio-oxidized to almost enantiopure ketones and lactones in good yields (48-74%) and optical purities (ee 93% to >99%, E>100).  相似文献

Anthocyanins are the major pigments contributing to carnation flowercoloration. Most carnation varieties are sterile and hence molecular breedingis an attractive approach to creating novel colors in this commercially importantcrop. Characterization of anthocyanins in the flowers of the modern carnationcv. Eilat revealed that only the orange pelargonidin accumulates, due to a lackof both flavonoid 3,5-hydroxylase and flavonoid3-hydroxylase activities. To modify flower color in cv. Eilat, we usedantisense suppression to block the expression of a gene encoding flavanone3-hydroxylase, a key step in the anthocyanin pathway. The transgenic plantsexhibited flower color modifications ranging from attenuation to complete lossof their original orange/reddish color. In the latter, only traces ofpelargonidin were detected. Dramatic suppression of flavanone 3-hydroxylaselevel/activity in these transgenes was confirmed by northern blot, RT-PCR andenzymatic assays. The new phenotype has been stable for over 4 years ofvegetative propagation. Moreover, transgenic plants with severe colormodification were more fragrant than control plants. GC-MS headspace analysesrevealed that transgenic anti-f3h flowers emit higherlevels of methyl benzoate. The possible interrelation between pathways leadingto anthocyanin and fragrance production is discussed.  相似文献

Fragrance development in rice has been reported due to a 8-bp deletion in the exon 7 of badh2 gene located on Chromosome 8S. Multiplex markers targeting the functional InDel polymorphism was earlier reported for genotyping fragrance trait, but the marker was observed to be inconsistent and difficult to use. We have developed a simple, co-dominant, functional marker for fragrance trait, which can be resolved in an agarose gel and validated in Basmati and non-Basmati aromatic rice varieties and in a mapping population segregated for fragrance trait. The marker targets the InDel polymorphism in badh2 gene and amplifies 95 and 103 bp fragments in fragrant and non-fragrant genotypes, respectively. The newly developed marker was highly efficient in discriminating all fragrant and non-fragrant genotypes and showed perfect co-segregation with the trait of fragrance in the mapping population. We recommend the use of this simple, low-cost marker in routine genotyping for fragrance trait in large scale breeding materials and germplasm.  相似文献

All members of the investigated genusCoryanthes (subtribeStanhopeinae) are pollinated by male euglossine bees. The different fragrance profiles are the primary reproductive isolating mechanisms, because the flowers are interfertile. The fragrance patterns of 17 species ofCoryanthes were analyzed by gas chromatography as a means to improve the classification of this genus. A first amine (2-N-methylaminobenzaldehyde) was found to be the main fragrance compound of an as yet unclassifiedCoryanthes species.  相似文献

The high volatility and water solubility of many natural perfumery alcohols leads to their rapid loss in fabric-care and personal-care applications. A dramatically enhanced substantivity is achieved by the use of fragrance precursors as controlled-release systems. In the first part of this article, we present multi-odorant precursors, in which the enzymatic cleavage of esters or carbonates of fragrant alcohols triggers subsequent steps leading to the release of fragrant ketones, lactones, and additional fragrant alcohols. In the second part, a study on oligocarbonates of fragrant alcohols is presented. Therein, the outstanding enzyme-independent performance of gluconolactone oligocarbonate 27 for the long-lasting release of (Z)-hex-3-en-1-ol is highlighted. We show that these polyfunctional compounds undergo complex rearrangements and intramolecular substitution reactions which lead to the observed release kinetics.  相似文献
