The feeding ecology of western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) living in the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park, northern Congo, was surveyed for one full year. This is the first record to make clear the seasonal changes in the feeding habits of gorillas in a whole year, living in the primary lowland forest almost completely undisturbed. Fecal contents, feeding traces, and direct observation were analyzed with reference to a fruit availability survey. Although the gorillas fed largely on fruits in the forest, their basic diet was fibrous parts of plants, including shoots, young leaves, and bark. Terrestrial herbaceous vegetation, such as monocotyledons of the Marantaceae and aquatic herbs having much protein content and minerals, were frequently eaten even in the fruiting season. As these highly nutritious fibrous foods were superabundant all year, the major foods of the Ndoki gorillas seemed to be those plants. However, they selected fruits as their alternative food resources in the fruiting season. Gorillas foraged on many fruit species, while showing strong preferences for some particular species. The swamp forest, including marshy grasslands, was an important and regular habitat for the Ndoki gorillas.  相似文献

The reproductive activity and the physiological state of the calanoid copepods Calanus helgolandicus and Calanoides carinatus were investigated off the coast of NW Spain during autumn to evaluate the effect of short food resources on both populations. Phytoplankton biomass was low, and neither phytoplankton size distribution nor composition was suitable to support high reproductive rates. Accordingly, egg production rates (EPR) were much lower than maximum rates for both species, pointing to food limitation. The reproductive index (RI), which represents the proportion of females with mature gonads, was < 50% at each of the three zones into which the sampling area was divided (coast, shelf and ocean). Potential recruitment rates were very low except at some nearshore stations, where the highest concentrations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), diatoms, dinoflagellates and large cells were found. EPR of C. helgolandicus and C. carinatus were correlated with phytoplankton biomass and unaffected by temperature. Phytoplankton carbon ingestion explained ca. 50% of the variability in EPR for both species. At most of the stations, herbivory was insufficient to cover the carbon requirements for reproduction and respiration, so females probably fed on heterotrophic prey to meet their demands. However, given the low fecundity observed, this omnivorous diet did not seem to be optimum for reproduction, and a severe food limitation is thus suggested. Furthermore, the high C/N values measured point to a notable lipid storage, but given the low EPR found, lipid reserves were probably invested into female maintenance rather than into gonad maturation. C. helgolandicus and C. carinatus populations did not mirror phytoplankton biomass distribution, but they correlated well when considering only copepodites V (CV). The CV could be preparing for the overwintering, storing lipid reserves to ensure a successful diapause, and they could also be advected by the poleward current detected during the study. Females showed a diel feeding rhythm, with highest ingestion rates during night. From our results, it follows that C. helgolandicus and C. carinatus females did not perform diel vertical migrations. We suggest that this behaviour is likely due to the food-limiting conditions, which make it more advantageous to remain at the surface during daytime.  相似文献

Aim To analyse the geographical patterns in the composition and diversity of otter's (Lutra lutra L.) diet and their relationship with climatic characteristics. Location European freshwater habitats under Mediterranean and temperate climatic regimes. Methods Thirty‐seven otter diet studies were reviewed, twenty‐one from temperate and sixteen from Mediterranean areas. All studies were based on spraint analysis and their results expressed as relative frequency of occurrence of seven main prey categories. Principal Component Analysis was performed to extract the main gradients of diet composition. Pearson's correlation and t‐tests were used to assess the relationship between diet characteristics (composition, diversity and taxonomic richness) and geographical and climatic variables. Results A clear latitudinal gradient in diet composition was observed. Otter diet was more diverse and featured more prey classes in southern localities, while the species was more piscivorous towards the north, where it predated upon a higher number of fish families. This pattern was similar when temperate and Mediterranean localities of Europe were compared. Mediterranean otters behaved as more generalist predators than temperate ones, relying less on fish, and more on aquatic invertebrates and reptiles. Main conclusions Geographical differences in otter feeding ecology in Europe seem to be related with the two contrasted climatic conditions affecting prey populations. The otter can act as a highly specialized piscivorous predator in temperate freshwater ecosystems, which do not suffer a dry season and have a comparatively stable water regime compared to Mediterranean ones. However, the unpredictable prey availability in Mediterranean areas, affected by strong spatial and temporal water shortages, favours a diversification of the otter's diet.  相似文献

Summary Aphelenchus avenae and various unidentified bacteria and actinomycetes were cultured from soil samples taken from a pine-forest and a wheat-field. Variables Influencing the Effect of a Meal on Brain Tryptophan   总被引:7,自引:5,他引:2  
Previous work from our laboratory points to plasma free tryptophan being a useful predictor of brain tryptophan concentration in many circumstances. Other work, in particular various studies on the acute effects of food intake, has emphasized the roles of plasma total tryptophan and of plasma large neutral amino acids that compete with tryptophan for transport to the brain. We have now studied associations between the above variables under different dietary conditions. Rats were allowed to feed for restricted periods during a 12-h light-12-h dark cycle. In the first study, rats were given access to a carbohydrate diet for 2 h midway through the light cycle and following an 18-h fast. The resultant rise of brain tryptophan was explicable largely by the associated fall in large neutral amino acids. In a second study, rats were adapted to a regimen whereby they were allowed access to the standard laboratory diet for 4 h during the dark cycle for 3 weeks. A postprandial decrease in brain tryptophan was associated with a fall in free tryptophan and of its ratio to competing amino acids. The brain change could be attributed neither to changes in plasma total tryptophan (which increased) nor to changes of its ratio to the competers (which remained unchanged). Results as a whole are thus consistent with changes of plasma free tryptophan and large neutral amino acid concentrations affecting brain tryptophan concentration under different dietary circumstances. It is suggested that these influences serve to maintain brain tryptophan when dietary supplies are defective.  相似文献

The circadian rhythm and feeding behaviour (bite rate) of 16 Scottish Blackface ewes of which eight were fitted with a lightweight (863 g) GPS collar were examined. The collar consisted of a leather harness and a 0.5 l aluminium box and represented 2.2% of the average body mass of the study ewes. No differences in circadian rhythm and bite rate were found between ewes fitted with the collars and ewes that were not. The relevance of using collar weight as a proportion of body mass as a guide to gauge its impact on the feeding behaviour of small ruminant (35–75 kg) herbivores is questioned.  相似文献

Healthy albino male rats were exposed to a simulated high altitude (HA) equivalent to 25000 ft (7620 m) for 6 h daily, continuously for 21 days to study the feeding behaviour. The 24-h food and water intake and body weight once in 3 days were recorded. Blood samples were drawn once a week from the retro-orbital venous plexus for blood sugar analysis. All the parameters were recorded before, during and after exposure to simulated HA. The results show a decrease in 24-h food and water intake and decreased gain in body weight during hypoxic exposure, which showed a tendency to come back to control during the post-exposure period. The blood sugar reflected a state of mild hyperglycaemia during exposure to HA.  相似文献

InLymnaea stagnalis, oral uptake of ambient medium was studied using51Cr-ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid. In normal snails Cr-ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid uptake showed two components: a high uptake rate within the first hour followed by moderate uptake proportional with time. The tracer accumulated mainly in the digestive system. All animals showed initial, transient uptake. Moderate uptake proportional with time did not occur in snails in which the buccal ganglia had been extirpated, in which both the buccal ganglia had been extirpated and the oesophagus was sectioned, or in snails provided with an oesophageal fistula. These snails did not accumulate tracer in the intestinal system. This type of tracer accumulation clearly represented oral ingestion of surrounding water. The oral water ingestion rate ranged from 8 to 12 μl·h−1·g−1. Assuming complete absorption, this accounts for 20–30% of the urine production rate. At low external concentrations the contribution of oral water ingestion to Na+ balance is negligible. However, its importance will grow with increasing external concentrations and becomes a major factor at higher concentrations. The ingestion rate increased almost sixfold when starving snails were allowed to feed. It is suggested that oral water ingestion is a consequence of making bite cycles and swallowing.  相似文献

The ocypodid crab Dotilla wichmanni is a common inhabitant of tropical sandy shores, where it feeds at low tide by sorting the material deposited by the ebbing tide. Feeding occurs in the immediate vicinity of the burrow by means of systematically sampling the sand surface. While feeding, the crabs move along trenches radiating from the burrow and produce pseudofaecal pellets which are amassed over the already excavated area. When disturbed, the crabs rapidly vanish into the burrow, where they remain hidden for a while. Upon re-emerging, they recommence feeding moving along the same trench as before retreat. The crabs, however, were found to assume the same feeding direction held before retreating even if any sign that could be derived from their previous activity was removed experimentally. To uncover the orientation cues used in this behaviour, the area near the burrow was manipulated in particular ways. The crabs were found to rely mainly on the skylight polarization pattern, while visual landmarks near the feeding area may play a role when astronomic cues provide no useful information, such as under overcast skies. Previous studies have demonstrated that bivalve molluscs respond to changing food conditions through processes such as preferential selection and ingestion of particulate matter. Little is known, however, about the underlying mechanisms accountable for these responses. To further explain feeding processes at the level of the pallial organs, we determined pallial cavity residence times, or the amount of time it took particles to travel from the inhalant aperture to the stomach, in two species of bivalves, Crassostrea virginica and Mytilus edulis, under conditions of differing particle quality, particle concentration, and temperature. From these residence times, particle-handling times on the labial palps were determined. Diets of three different qualities were tested, including Rhodomonas lens cells, particles prepared from ground Spartina sp. detritus, and a 50/50 mixture of both. Bivalves were delivered one of the three diets along with 10-μm fluorescent polystyrene beads (tracer), removed from feeding chambers at intervals from 30 s up to 20 min, and placed in liquid nitrogen to halt particle transport. Digestive systems of bivalves were then dissected and examined for the presence of tracer beads. Particle-residence times in the pallial cavity and handling times on the labial palps of C. virginica were significantly affected by changes in diet type. Particle-handling times on the palps decreased with increasing diet quality and ranged from 2.2 min (100% R. lens) to 22.8 min (100% ground Spartina sp.), accounting for 88% and 99%, respectively, of the total time particles spent in the pallial cavity. In contrast, diet quality had little effect on particle-residence times in the pallial cavity of M. edulis. However, residence times were affected by temperature and diet concentration. Temperature significantly affected residence times at particle concentrations of both 20 and 100 particles μl−1, whereas particle concentration affected residence times at 20 °C, but not at 5 °C. Particle-handling times on the labial palps ranged from less than 1 to 5.5 min, depending on temperature and concentration, accounting for 50% to 82%, respectively, of the total time particles spent in the pallial cavity. We suggest that (1) observed interspecific differences in particle handling on the labial palps may be due to differences in palp morphology and function, and (2) particle sorting and selection on the labial palps is a rate-limiting step of pre-ingestive feeding processes in by bivalves.  相似文献
