Twelve microsatellite loci were isolated from the Peruvian tropical plant‐ant, Azteca ulei cordiae (Hymenoptera: Dolichoderinae). High levels of within‐population variation were observed at most loci, with number of alleles ranging from four to 18, and heterozygosity from 0.118 to 1 per population sample. Cross‐species amplification of these loci was also successfully tested in several other species of the same ant genus Azteca.  相似文献

Tapinoma wilsonisp. n. is described and illustrated from Saudi Arabia based on the worker caste collected from Al Baha, Saudi Arabia. It closely resembles Tapinoma lugubre Santschi 1917, from Zimbabwe in body measurements but can be distinguished from the latter species by the yellowish brown color; the yellowish pubescence, the two pairs of hairs present on the anterior part of the head; and the distinctly concave anterior clypeal margin. Biological and ecological notes of the new species are presented. An identification key to the workers of the Arabian species of the genus Tapinoma is given.  相似文献

Interactions between potentially mutualistic partners can vary over geographic areas. Myrmecophytes, which are plants harbouring ants, often do not exhibit sufficient intraspecific variability to permit comparative studies of myrmecophytic traits over space or time. Humboldtia brunonis (Fabaceae), a dominant, endemic myrmecophyte of the Indian Western Ghats, is unique in exhibiting considerable variability in myrmecophytic traits, e.g. domatia presence, as well as domatia occupancy and associated ant diversity throughout its geographic range. Although its caulinary domatia are occupied by at least 16 ant species throughout its distribution, young leaves and floral buds producing extrafloral nectar (EFN) are protected by ants from herbivory only in the southernmost region, where Technomyrmex albipes (Dolichoderinae) is the most abundant ant species. The extent of protection by ants was positively related to local species richness of ants and their occupancy of domatia. On the other hand, the highest abundance of interlopers in the domatia, including non‐protective ants, the arboreal earthworm Perionyx pullus, and other invertebrates, occurred in sites with the least protection from herbivory by ants. Whereas domatia morphometry did not vary between sites, domatia occupied by protective ants and invertebrate interlopers were longer and broader than empty ones at all sites. The lowest percentage of empty domatia was found at the southernmost site. There was a progressive decline in ant species richness from that found at the sites, to that feeding on H. brunonis EFN, to that occupying domatia, possibly indicating constraints in the interactions with the plants at various levels. Our study of this dominant myrmecophyte emphasizes the impact of local factors such as the availability of suitable ant partners, domatia occupancy, and the presence of interlopers on the emergence of a protection mutualism between ants and plants. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 538–551.  相似文献

Young plants of the commercially important timber species Hopea odorata Roxb. are seriously damaged by the psyllid Trioza hopeae Burckhardt & Vu in nurseries in South Central and Southern Vietnam. Farmers routinely use Class 1 toxic insecticides to control the psyllids but these pose serious health risks in the urban environment. As a precursor to developing a pest management strategy, we studied the life cycle of T. hopeae and trialed several control measures. Trioza hopeae is polyvoltine with overlapping generations peaking in mid wet season. Females laid approximately 135 eggs; however, there was a natural attrition rate of about 80% in first‐instar nymphs due to the nymph's inability to find a suitable feeding site. Feeding nymphs induced pit galls on young H. odorata leaves and were present on all trees examined during the study. The pre‐adult life cycle lasted approximately 13 days and adult life span approximately seven days. Several toxic insecticides were found to be effective for controlling T. hopeae, but a novel non‐toxic alternative was equally as effective. We discuss these methods and potential biological control measures.  相似文献

This study reports new information on interactions between two sympatric ant species, the plant-ant Azteca alfari (Dolichoderinae) living in association with the myrmecophyte Cecropia obtusa (Cecropiaceae) and Camponotus blandus (Formicinae), a ground-nesting, arboreal-foraging species. Workers of A. alfari forage only on the foliage and the upper parts of the trunk of their host Cecropia, while C. blandus nests in the ground but frequently forages and patrols pioneer tree foliage, including Cecropia. The activity pattern of A. alfari and the number of C. blandus on Cecropia obtusa was monitored hourly during a two-day period in a disturbed area in French Guiana. The maximum activity of C. blandus occurred between 8:30 and 12:30, at which time A. alfari had retreated within the domatia and were least present on the trunks. Even though aggressive confrontations were observed, C. blandus workers often initiate confrontations but do not prey on A. alfari nor exploit food bodies produced by Cecropia, the principal food source of A. alfari. Hence hostility appears to be the result of territoriality. Differences in their foraging rhythms are proposed as promoting resource and territory partitioning in this ant assemblage. 通过对臭蚁亚科7属16种昆虫(凹头臭蚁属philidris因未采集到除模式标本以外的标本,故未包含在其中)线粒体DNA的COⅠ、COⅡ和Cyt b基因部分序列(1 801 bp)进行测定,并从GeneBank下载Leptomyrmex unicolor相应基因片段序列,以江华多刺蚁Polyrhachis jianghuaensis和聚纹双刺猛蚁Diacamma rugosum作外群,重建了中国臭蚁亚科系统发育关系.研究结果支持(狡臭蚁属Technomyrmex+(酸臭蚁属Tapinoma+光胸臭蚁属Liometopum)的关系,虹臭蚁属Iridomyrmex+凹臭蚁属Ochetellus为姐妹群,强烈支持臭蚁属Dolichoderus的单系性,8种臭蚁的遗传关系稳定:((((((平背臭蚁D.flatidorsus+黑腹臭蚁D.taprobanae)+(皱头臭蚁D.rugocapitus+费氏臭蚁D.feae)+双疣臭蚁D.thoracicus)+凹头臭蚁D.incisus)+西伯利亚臭蚁D.sibiricus)+毛臭蚁D.pilosus).系统发育树显示细臭蚁属Leptomyrmex在臭蚁亚科进化过程中的分类地位不确定,没有与同族的虹臭蚁属和凹臭蚁属聚在一起,而是与穴臭蚁属Borhriomyrmex聚在一起互为姐妹群,这与传统的形态分类观点不一致,还有待于进一步研究.  相似文献

Symbiotic interactions between butterfly larvae and ants, termed myrmecophily, require a range of behavioural and morphological adaptations (ant‐organs). Here, using light and scanning electron microscopy, we describe the complete life cycle of two species of Theope (Lepidoptera: Riodinidae) that have contrasting ways of life. Theope thestias larvae are facultatively tended by several ant species, whereas Theope pieridoides have obligate symbiotic interactions with Azteca ants that inhabit a myrmecophytic tree. Morphological differences associated with their different degrees of intimacy with tending ants are visible from hatching. In T. thestias, the untended first‐instar larva has elongated bifurcated setae and a few tiny perforated cupola organs (PCOs), whereas in T. pieridoides, the ant‐tended first instar has short dendritic setae, larger and more numerous PCOs, and functional tentacle nectary organs (TNOs). Throughout ontogeny, T. pieridoides always shows more conspicuous ant‐organs than T. thestias, with the exception of balloon setae, which are larger and more numerous in T. thestias. In addition, mature T. pieridoides larvae have an anterior set of ant‐organs, including a new type, here described and termed anterior glandular openings (AGOs). Based on the behavioural responses of ants in contact with these structures, a new interpretation for the mechanism whereby Theope larvae can manipulate the behaviour of their tending ants is proposed. Until now, three ecological syndromes can be defined among Theope species: (1) oligophagous larvae with facultative myrmecophily; (2) monophagous larvae with obligate myrmecophily; and (3) polyphagous larvae with obligate myrmecophily. These results suggest that differences in the degree of specificity in the ant–plant interactions may have an important role in the evolution of host‐plant use in Theope. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Facultative associations are commonly encountered between ants and lycaenids, although the nature and patterns of associations are typically unclear. This study investigated a facultative symbiosis involving the lycaenid Theclinesthes albocincta (Lycaenidae), its host plant Adriana quadripartita and Australian native ants. Ants in the genera Ochetellus and Iridomyrmex were most frequently found in association with T. albocincta larvae, although Iridomyrmex ants were found in much lower abundance than were ants in Ochetellus. The abundances of Ochetellus and Iridomyrmex were highly correlated with larval abundance, but not egg abundance. Observations and experiments recorded oviposi- tion on male inflorescences on more than 95% of occasions, but oviposition was not greater on inflorescences with ants present. Behavioral assays showed that Iridomyrmex ants were aggressive towards female butterflies on significantly more occasions than were Ochetellus ants. These findings indicate potential evolutionary relationships between T. albocincta and two genera of ants that were abundant within the habitat.  相似文献
