Arachnids of the order Opiliones (harvestmen), which includes around 6000 specìes, have a pair of scent glands that open at the sides of the body, producing substances used as defence. Several types of behavioural, morphological and chemical defensive mechanisms have been identified in the order as a whole, although some of these tactics were restricted to particular groups. Only around 60 species have been studied from this perspective so far, more than half of which belong to the largest harvestman family within the order Laniatores, the Gonyleptidae, and have only recently been studied in an evolutionary perspective, showing the usefulness of defensive characters in taxonomy and evolutionary biology. Within Laniatores, the Grassatores clade includes the Gonyleptidae and 20 additional families, mostly poorly or not previously studied. We describe the morphology of the structures involved in fluid displacement during chemical defence in 15 of these families (data on two additional families are available from the literature) and discuss the evolution of such traits based on an available phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships within Grassatores, using the representatives of Triaenonychidae (a non‐Grassatores family of Laniatores) for comparison. We conclude that most non‐gonyleptoid Grassatores share (maybe plesiomorphically) a series of characteristics, mostly strongly different from what is observed within the gonyleptoids, and that smaller groups seem to share diagnostic features related to chemical defence, as is the case of stygnids, cosmetids and triaenonychines, and especially of manaosbiids and cranaids, whose defensive morphologies largely resemble those of derived gonyleptids. The following main synapomorphies were detected: (a) Grassatores: the presence of a deep and well‐defined descending channel; (b) Samooidea+Zalmoxoidea+Assamioidea+Gonyleptoidea: lateral pegs along the lateral channel; (c) Samooidea+Zalmoxoidea: deep channels forming an H on the dorsal scute; (d) Gonyleptoidea: ozopore cutting dorsally (reversing in Agoristenidae and Stygnidae to a laterally placed oval ozopore), a wide and smooth lateral channel, reversing to a lateral channel whose bottom is covered with either small plates (Agoristenidae) or high tubercles (Stygnidae), and apophyses of coxa II close to or covering the ozopore.  相似文献

1. Larvae of tortoise beetles present exaggerated body parts in association with an abdominal shield, which is made of faeces and exuviae that are deposited on the urogomphi throughout ontogeny. Growth trajectories and scaling relationships of these functional structures associated with the shield, if any, are unknown. 2. This study of Gratiana spadicea first tested, under field conditions, whether there is adaptive value associated with the shield regarding protection against predation and sunlight. Then, under laboratory conditions, the growth trajectory and allometric relationships among body parts were investigated, including scoli, individual and apparent furcae, and shield. The influence of food deprivation on the development of these structures was also determined. 3. Findings from previous studies were confirmed, suggesting that the adaptive value assigned to the shield is related to protection against predators. The present study demonstrated for the first time that the shield acts as a parasol in cassidines, decreasing the exposure of their larval body to sunlight. The scoli and apparent furca are exaggerated structures of G. spadicea, the development of which involves allometric growth and greater energetic investment (positive allometry) during ontogeny. There was proportionally less energetic investment for somatic construction of individual furca (negative allometry) due to the accumulation of the exuviae. 4. The possible consequences, in terms of developmental costs and survivorship benefits associated with the evolution of such exaggerated structures, are discussed.  相似文献

Mythimna unipuncta is a species with low susceptibility to the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxin, and this insect occasionally causes devastating damage to maize. In the study region, M. unipuncta‐developed larvae were observed moving from a non‐Bt crop to a nearby Bt crop. Although the first response of many caterpillars to xenobiotics, such as the Bt toxin, is to reduce food intake and prolong development, few studies have focused on the causes and consequences of this response in terms of resistance evolution. To clarify the causes of this response, this work compared changes in the feeding behaviour, cytochrome P450 expression and juvenile hormone titre during the last larval instar of M. unipuncta after Bt ingestion. Four P450 enzymes related to the xenobiotic metabolism of the CYP9 and CYP6 families were identified. Developed larvae fed the Bt diet reduced their food intake and CYP9 expression, experienced prolonged development and presented an altered juvenile hormone balance. The CYP9s were not increased in the larvae that consumed Bt, as previously expected, although their highest expression was observed when larval feeding increased. The high recovery capacity of the larvae contributed to their development when they were fed a non‐Bt diet. The efficiency of responses that act jointly as a defence mechanism against Bt might favour the development of field resistance to the toxin. Therefore, these responses should be further investigated for resistance management programmes.  相似文献

The founder of the MiAMP1 protein family was originally isolated from Macadamia integrifolia and had antimicrobial activity in vitro. MiAMP1 was the first plant protein with a structure containing a βγ-crystallin precursor fold, a structural superfamily associated with antimicrobial proteins in other kingdoms. In recent times, expanding plant genomics information has revealed that genes encoding homologues of MiAMP1 are conserved across the plant kingdom from lycophytes, gymnosperms to early angiosperms (e.g. Amborella, Papaver) and some monocots (e.g. Zantedeschia, Zea, Sorghum). Many studies of plant–pathogen interactions in gymnosperms have demonstrated a potential role for MiAMP1 family members in defence against fungal pathogens. This commentary describes the discovery and diversity of this protein family and considers current evidence supporting, and future opportunities for substantiating, a role in defence in primitive plants, and why this role may have diminished in higher plants.  相似文献

It emerged recently that there is an inter‐relationship between drought and ultraviolet‐B (UV‐B) radiation in plant responses, in that both stresses provoke an oxidative burst. The purpose of this investigation was to compare the effects and interaction of drought and UV‐B in wheat and pea. The absence of changes in relative leaf water content (RWC) after UV‐B treatments indicate that changes in water content were not involved. RWC was the main factor resulting in reduced growth in response to drought. Increases in anthocyanin and phenols were detected after exposure to UV‐B. The increases do not appear to be of sufficient magnitude to act as a UV‐B screen. UV‐B application caused greater membrane damage than drought stress, as assessed by lipid peroxidation as well as osmolyte leakage. An increase in the specific activities of antioxidant enzymes was measured after UV‐B alone as well as after application to droughted plants. Proline increased primarily in drought‐stressed pea or wheat. Proline may be the drought‐induced factor which has a protective role in response to UV‐B. The physiological and biochemical parameters measured indicate the UV‐B light has stronger stress effectors than drought on the growth of seedlings of both species. The two environmental stresses acted synergistically to induce protective mechanisms in that pre‐application of either stress reduced the damage caused by subsequent application of the other stress.  相似文献

1. In a laboratory study of maturation feeding of female pine weevil Hylobius abietis on current and 1‐year‐old stem bark of transplants of Scots and Corsican pine, Norway and Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, and hybrid larch, the length of the pre‐oviposition period was influenced by the species on which weevils fed. The shortest pre‐oviposition period was on hybrid larch (11.8 days) and the longest on Douglas fir (15.5 days). 2. The species on which weevils fed also affected fecundity but there was evidence of a species–year interaction. Over a period of 36 days, most eggs were laid by weevils feeding on current stem of Norway spruce and Corsican and Scots pine and fewest on current stem of Sitka spruce. 3. Significant maternal effects on egg size were observed both in relation to female size and conifer species. The largest eggs were laid on Corsican pine and the smallest on Douglas fir, with no evidence of a trade‐off between number of eggs laid and their size. 4. There was a positive relationship between egg and larval size and between larval size and survival on logs of four conifer species. Residual resistance mechanisms in the bark of recently cut stumps and larval competition are discussed briefly in relation to the importance of the observed maternal effects on weevil population dynamics.  相似文献

Cyanogenesis (i.e. the evolution of HCN from damaged plant tissue) requires the presence of two biochemical pathways, one controlling synthesis of the cyanogenic glycoside and the other controlling the production of a specific degradative beta-glucosidase. The sole cyanogenic glycoside in Eucalyptus nobilis was identified as prunasin (D-mandelonitrile beta-D-glucoside) using HPLC and GC-MS. Seedlings from three populations of E. nobilis were grown under controlled conditions and 38% were found to be acyanogenic, a proportion far greater than reported for any other cyanogenic eucalypt. A detailed study of the acyanogenic progeny from a single open-pollinated parent found that 23% lacked a cyanogenic beta-glucosidase, 32% lacked prunasin and 9% lacked both. Of the remaining seedlings initially identified as acyanogenics, 27% contained either trace amounts of beta-glucosidase or prunasin, while 9% contained trace amounts of both. Results support the hypothesis that the two components necessary for cyanogenesis are inherited independently. Trace amounts are likely to result from the presence of non-specific beta-glucosidases or the glycosylation of the cyanohydrin intermediate by non-specific UDP glycosyl transferases.  相似文献

Diterpene resin acids are a significant component of conifer oleoresin, which is a viscous mixture of terpenoids present constitutively or inducibly upon herbivore or pathogen attack and comprises one form of chemical resistance to such attacks.
