Impact of a parasitic plant on the zonation of two salt marsh perennials   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Animal, fungal, and bacterial consumers can have dramatic effects on the structure of plant communities, often by consuming dominant competitors and indirectly increasing the abundance of inferior competitors. We investigated the role of a consumer plant, the parasite Cuscuta salina, on plant zonation in a western salt marsh. Cuscuta had a strong host species preference in experiments, disproportionally infecting Salicornia virginica, the dominant competitor in most of the marsh. In plots with Cuscuta, which infected 18% of our study area over a 3-year period, Salicornia cover decreased and the cover of Arthrocnemum increased substantially in comparison to plots without Cuscuta. Deep in the Salicornia zone, the cover of Arthrocnemum in Cuscuta-infected plots increased by 558% in 1 year relative to uninfected plots. At the ecotone, the cover of Arthrocnemum in Cuscuta-infected plots increased by only 41% during the same time interval. These data suggest that the relative benefit of a consumer to a less-preferred, subordinate competitor may be strongest where competition is the most asymmetrical as predicted by recent theoretical models. By weakening the competitive dominant, which in the absence of the parasite can create virtual monocultures, Cuscuta enhanced community diversity and altered the ecotone between Salicornia and Arthrocnemum. Cuscuta patches were highly dynamic at the ecotone between Salicornia and Arthrocnemum, and thus the changes we measured in our sample plots were likely to be representative of large portions of the marsh. Forest soils and streams receive substantial inputs of detritus from deciduous vegetation. Decay of this material is a critical ecosystem process, recycling nutrients and supporting detrital-based food webs, and has been attributed, in part, to leaf litter species composition. However, research on why speciose leaf litter should degrade differently has relied on a bottom-up approach, embracing interspecific variation in litter chemistry. We hypothesized that preferential feeding by an aquatic detritivore interacts with species-specific leaf palatability and slows decay of speciose leaf litter. We addressed this by offering four single- and mixed-species leaf resources to field densities of a leaf-shredding consumer. Mixing leaf species resulted in slower total leaf decomposition. Decreases in mixed-species decomposition was partly explained by preferential feeding by the consumers in one case, but the lack of preferential feeding in other mixtures suggested an interactive effect of feeding and microbial degradation. Loss of riparian tree biodiversity may have implications for in-stream consumer-resource interactions.  相似文献

Presence of habitat-forming macroalgae is supposed to mitigate effects of altered resources on benthic microalgae and their consumers. In a field experiment in a microtidal area of the Western Baltic Sea, we tested the interactive effects of nutrient enrichment, artificial shading, and habitat complexity on microalgal biomass and diversity as well as invertebrate abundance and richness. Habitat complexity comprised three levels, the presence of macroalgal canopy of Fucus vesiculosus, the presence of macroalgal propagules, and the absence of both (=control). Microalgal biomass (and richness) was significantly reduced by canopy presence (−88%, compared to control) and shading (−42%), with the highest biomass in the absence of both canopy and macroalgal propagules at ambient light. Within the microalgal assemblage, higher biomass was related to lower evenness (higher dominance). Density of two main invertebrate groups (snails and amphipods) strongly increased with canopy presence (on average from 53 to 154 individuals m−2 stone area for snails, and from 234 to 1203 individuals m−2 for amphipods) and so did invertebrate richness (from 4.3 to 10.3). Additionally, snail density doubled with increasing light availability. The snail responses to light and canopy were independent, the former relating to higher availability of microalgal prey, the latter to more structure. Microalgal taxon richness and biomass decreased with increasing invertebrate richness and with density of snails and amphipods. Our experiment thus showed that the presence of habitat-forming macroalgae alters biomass and diversity across trophic levels in benthic coastal communities as well as their response to resource manipulations.  相似文献

Many theories of consumer control of communities have come from studies conducted in relatively benign, temperate zone rocky intertidal systems. Here, we examine gastropod grazing and the maintenance of bare space on a dry, wind-swept rocky shore of Patagonia, Argentina. Two limpet species are the primary intertidal grazers. Siphonaria lessoni dominates mid and high intertidal zones, while Nacella magellanica dominates the lower zone. In all zones, limpet densities are positively correlated with bare space and the occurrence of cracks. Tethering experiments revealed that: (1) physical stress sets the upper distribution limit of both limpets, (2) predators, such as oyster catchers, regulate Nacella populations and may restrict them to cracks and vertical surfaces, and (3) desiccation stress appears to drive similar crack distribution patterns of Siphonaria in the upper intertidal. Experimental removal of limpets in each intertidal zone indicated that limpets have: (1) no detectable effect in the high intertidal where physical forces dominate community organization, (2) weak impacts at mid-elevations as grazing only limited the abundance of fleshy algae with physical forces again dominating community structure, and (3) relatively stronger, but still weak impacts in the low zone. These results suggest that grazing impacts on Argentine rocky shores are weak in comparison to the physical stresses (e.g. high winds, low humidity) that largely determine structure in this system. The dominance of physical forcing in this system occurs despite having similar grazer densities to other temperate, but comparatively wet, rocky shorelines (e.g. British Isles) where top-down control is strong.  相似文献

Stewart and DeMarco’s economic theory of patient decision-making applied to the case of diabetes is flawed by clinical inaccuracies and an unrealistic depiction of patients as rational traders. The theory incorrectly represents patients’ struggles to optimize their management as calculated trade-offs against the costs of care, and gives an unrealistic, inflexible account of such costs. It imputes to physicians the view that their patients’ lack of compliance is unreasonable, but physicians are accustomed to the variety of human factors which contribute to suboptimal compliance, and work with patients to minimize their influence. By depicting patients as rational traders rather than human beings with a range of motivations and burdens, the economic theory distorts the proper function of informed consent.  相似文献

The structure of rocky intertidal communities may be influenced by large-scale patterns of productivity. In this study we examine the in situ rates of production by intertidal epilithic microalgae (chlorophyll a production per unit area per month), intertidal nutrient concentrations (nitrates, nitrites, phosphates and silicates), and standing stocks of different functional-form groups of macroalgae around the South African coast, and their relationships to consumer biomass. Clear gradients of in situ intertidal primary production and nutrient concentrations were recorded around the South African coast, values being highest on the west coast, intermediate on the south and lowest on the east coast. Primary production by intertidal epilithic microalgae was correlated with nutrient availability and could also be related to nearshore phytoplankton production. The dominance patterns of different functional forms of macroalgae changed around the coast, with foliose algae prevalent on the west coast and coralline algae on the east coast. However, overall macroalgal standing stocks did not reflect the productivity gradient, being equally high on the east and west coasts, and low in the south. Positive relationships existed between the average biomass of intertidal intertebrate consumers (grazers and filter-feeders) and intertidal productivity, although only the grazers were directly connected to in situ production by epilithic intertidal microalgae. The maximum body size of a widely distributed limpet, Patella granularis, was also positively correlated with level of in situ primary production. The maximal values of biomass attained by intertidal filter-feeders were not related to intertidal primary production, and were relatively constant around the coast. At a local scale, filter-feeder biomass is known to be strongly influenced by wave action. This implies that the local-scale water movements over-ride any effects that large-scale gradients of primary production may have on filter-feeders. The large-scale gradient in intertidal productivity around the coast is thus strongly linked with grazer biomass and individual body size, but any effect it has on filter-feeder biomass seems subsidiary to the local effects of wave action.  相似文献

The goal of this research work was to assist consumers in considering environmental aspects of food consumption. A simplified, modular LCA approach has been used to evaluate the impacts from the consumers’ point of view. Comparative LCA’s have been calculated for five single aspects of decisions: type of agricultural practice, origin, packaging material, type of preservation, and consumption. The inventory for one module includes the environmental impacts related to one particular product characteristic. The modular LCA allows one to investigate the trade-offs among different decision parameters. It could be shown that most of the decision parameters might have an influence on the overall impact of a vegetable product. Greenhouse production and vegetables transported by air cause the highest surplus environmental impact. For meat products, the agricultural production determines the overall environmental impact. The total impact for vegetable or meat purchases may vary by a factor of eight or two-and-a-half. Different suggestions for consumers have been ranked according to the variation of average impacts, due to a marginal change of behaviour. Avoiding air-transported food products leads to the highest decrease of environmental impacts.  相似文献

Livestock impact is one of the main causes of habitat loss globally. However, the effects of livestock on flora and fauna diversity have been contradictory, observing cases with positive, neutral, and negative effects. We performed a meta-analysis of the scientific information published in the last 15 years, using Google Scholar and WoS for the search. The inclusion criteria were if the studies presented a) changes in abundance, richness, biomass, plant cover, and consumers; b) included replicas; c) the size of the sample; d) study on domestic cattle, and e) reported the mean and standard deviation of effects of each treatment. We found 2450 scientific publications of which we selected 67 publications that reported the effects a) of grazing on the richness, abundance, cover, and biomass of plants (producers), and b) on richness and abundance of primary and secondary consumers, comparing grazed and non-grazed (or weakly grazed) environments. Grazing did not significantly affect the abundance of the plants or animals studied, regardless of whether they were primary or secondary consumers. The magnitude and direction of the observed effects on plants and consumers could be influenced by livestock type, the natural environments evaluated (forests, grasslands, or scrublands), the spatial and temporal scales involved, and the plant species origin (i.e., native versus non-native). The significant effect of livestock on plants and consumers, also can be differentiated in the characteristics of the species (e.g., life-history traits, etc.) that go beyond their position in the food chains. Evaluating the livestock grazing effect in more than one trophic level helps understand how grazing affects the species according to their way of life, in contrast to evaluations of a single trophic level.  相似文献

Through a Privacy Calculus (i.e. risk–benefit trade-off) lens, this study identifies factors that contribute to consumers’ adoption of personalised nutrition services. We argue that consumers’ intention to adopt personalised nutrition services is determined by perceptions of Privacy Risk, Personalisation Benefit, Information Control, Information Intrusiveness, Service Effectiveness, and the Benevolence, Integrity, and Ability of a service provider. Data were collected in eight European countries using an online survey. Results confirmed a robust and Europe-wide applicable cognitive model, showing that consumers’ intention to adopt personalised nutrition services depends more on Perceived Personalisation Benefit than on Perceived Privacy Risk. Perceived Privacy Risk was mainly determined by perceptions of Information Control, whereas Perceived Personalisation Benefit primarily depended on Perceived Service Effectiveness. Services that required increasingly intimate personal information, and in particular DNA, raised consumers’ Privacy Risk perceptions, but failed to increase perceptions of Personalisation Benefit. Accordingly, to successfully exploit personalised nutrition, service providers should convey a clear message regarding the benefits and effectiveness of personalised nutrition services. Furthermore, service providers may reduce Privacy Risk by increasing consumer perceptions of Information Control. To enhance perceptions of both Information Control and Service Effectiveness, service providers should make sure that consumers perceive them as competent and reliable.  相似文献

The newly examined Lower Cambrian strata in the Laisvall-Storuman area, central Swedish Caledonides, yield diverse and stratigraphically significant phytoplanktic organic-walled microfossils (acritarchs) associated with the olenellid trilobites of Holmia sp. that appear to be at the lowermost horizon ever recorded in the Caledonides. The acritarchs, recovered throughout the Grammajukku Formation, are taxonomically reviewed in the context of regional and global trends of phytoplankton diversity. The assemblages are assigned to acritarch zones Skiagia ornata-Fimbriaglomerella membranacea and Heliosphaeridium dissimilare-Skiagia ciliosa , corresponding to the Schmidtiellus mickwitzi and Holmia kjerulfi trilobite zones. The records of acritarch radiations and appearances of trilobites and other faunas in Baltica, and on a more interregional scale, are biochronologically correlated, revealing tightly coupled evolutionary events among primary producers and consumers. The timing of early diversifications of trilobites in various faunal provinces is discussed and the relative age of the oldest known non-mineralized arthropods from the Zawiszyn Formation in Poland is estimated.  相似文献
