Pereskia aculeata and Pereskia grandifolia have been studied widely due to their high nutritional and therapeutic values. However, little is known about the biological requirements of their seeds for the various germination factors. Thus, this experiment aimed to evaluate the thermal effects on the germination of these species at the temperatures of 24 °C, 27 °C, 30 °C, 33 °C and 36 °C. After verification of the existence of differences in the performance of germination, a non-linear regression was carried out, relating the germination to temperature and identifying its point of maximum efficiency. We found that the lowest synchronization indexes of germination were observed close to 30 °C. The best germination response of the P. aculeata and P. grandifolia was observed at 30 °C and 33 °C, respectively, with greater germination strength and fewer days to attain 63.21% of germinations. The results obtained from the germination of P. aculeata and P. grandifolia can be described by the Weindull distribution model with three parameters, as proposed by Carneiro and Guedes (1992).  相似文献

The pink, tubular, nectariferous flowers of Melocactus intortus (Cactaceae) in Puerto Rico are visited by native hummingbirds (Anthracothorax dominicus), but also by invasive honeybees (Apis mellifera) and ants (Solenopsis sp.). We sought to determine if the bees and ants significantly alter the pollination of M. intortus by measuring pollinator effectiveness. Using traditional estimates of effectiveness (visitation rate and seed set), our results show that hummingbirds were the most effective pollinators as expected. Bees and ants were less effective, and their contributions were one‐fourth to one‐tenth of that observed for hummingbirds. We then modified this measure of effectiveness by adding two components, fitness of progeny and temporal availability of visitors, both of which refine estimates of flower visitor effectiveness. With these new estimations, we found that the effectiveness values of all three animal visitors decreased; however, the role of hummingbirds as the principal pollinator was maintained, whereas the effectiveness values of bees and ants approached zero. By these new measures of overall pollinator effectiveness, the invasive honeybees and ants have little effect on the reproductive success of M. intortus.  相似文献

Aim  The aim of this study was to assess the causal mechanisms underlying populational subdivision in Drosophila gouveai , a cactophilic species associated with xeric vegetation enclaves in eastern Brazil. A secondary aim was to investigate the genetic effects of Pleistocene climatic fluctuations on these environments.
Location  Dry vegetation enclaves within the limits of the Cerrado domain in eastern Brazil.
Methods  We determined the mitochondrial DNA haplotypes of 55 individuals (representing 12 populations) based on sequence data of a 483-bp fragment from the cytochrome c oxidase subunit II (COII) gene. Phylogenetic and coalescent analyses were used to test for the occurrence of demographic events and to infer the time of divergence amongst genetically independent groups.
Results  Our analyses revealed the existence of two divergent subclades (G1 and G2) plus an introgressed clade restricted to the southernmost range of D. gouveai . Subclades G1 and G2 displayed genetic footprints of range expansion and segregated geographical distributions in south-eastern and some central highland regions, east and west of the Paraná River valley. Molecular dating indicated that the main demographic and diversification events occurred in the late to middle Pleistocene.
Main conclusions  The phylogeographical and genetic patterns observed for D. gouveai in this study are consistent with changes in the distribution of dry vegetation in eastern Brazil. All of the estimates obtained by molecular dating indicate that range expansion and isolation pre-dated the Last Glacial Maximum, occurring during the late to middle Pleistocene, and were probably triggered by climatic changes during the Pleistocene. The current patchy geographical distribution and population subdivision in D. gouveai is apparently closely linked to these past events.  相似文献

The phylogenetic distribution of two deletions, of about 350 and 250 bp respectively, within the chloroplast trnT–trnL intergenic spacer was examined. One deletion was found in all members of Cactaceae subfamily Cactoideae sampled, totaling 37 species, but not in taxa from other subfamilies or closely related families. The second was shared by a subset of Cactoideae comprising members of tribes Cereeae, Trichocereeae, and Browningieae (in part), as well as Harrisia. Close links among the former three South American tribes have been previously hypothesized. This distribution suggested that Browningieae, a tribe defined largely by shared primitive features, were not monophyletic, and that Harrisia may have been incorrectly placed outside the Browningieae–Cereeae–Trichocereeae group. We have recently described a hitherto unsuspected catechyl lignin polymer (C‐lignin) in the seed coats of Vanilla orchid and in cacti of one genus, Melocactus (Chen et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA. 2012, 109, 1772‐1777.). We have now determined the lignin types in the seed coats of 130 different cactus species. Lignin in the vegetative tissues of cacti is of the normal guaiacyl/syringyl (G/S) type, but members of most genera within the subfamily Cactoidae possess seed coat lignin of the novel C‐type only, which we show is a homopolymer formed by endwise β–O–4‐coupling of caffeyl alcohol monomers onto the growing polymer resulting in benzodioxane units. However, the species examined within the genera Coryphantha, Cumarinia, Escobaria and Mammillaria (Cactoideae) mostly had normal G/S lignin in their seeds, as did all six species in the subfamily Opuntioidae that were examined. Seed coat lignin composition is still evolving in the Cactaceae, as seeds of one Mammillaria species (M. lasiacantha) possess only C‐lignin, three Escobaria species (E. dasyacantha, E. lloydii and E. zilziana) contain an unusual lignin composed of 5‐hydroxyguaiacyl units, the first report of such a polymer that occurs naturally in plants, and seeds of some species contain no lignin at all. We discuss the implications of these findings for the mechanisms that underlie the biosynthesis of these newly discovered lignin types.  相似文献

Abstract

The ancestors of cacti were leafy trees that had hard, woody trunks. The development of the cactus body is controlled by ontogenetic mechanisms that have evolved, and now they produce a body that is leafless, succulent and has a photosynthetic cortex. Specific changes include: bark formation is postponed and the epidermis and stomata function for many years; the outer cortex is a palisade cortex with intercellular spaces; there are cortical bundles that resemble leaf veins but which have secondary xylem and phloem. Wood development has changed dramatically such that water storage is maximized (increased ray parenchyma) and danger of water stress is minimized (increased paratracheal parenchyma, loss of fibers). Several genera have polymorphic wood: the plants produce one type of wood for several years, then later they produce a different type. It is possible that the extensive evolutionary changes have resulted from mutations in the controller regions of genes, not in the structural regions.  相似文献

  • To determine seed removal influence on seed populations, we need to quantify pre‐ and post‐dispersal seed removal. Several studies have quantified seed removal in temperate American deserts, but few studies have been performed in tropical deserts. These studies have only quantified pre‐ or post‐dispersal seed removal, thus underestimating the influence of seed removal. We evaluated pre‐ and post‐dispersal seed removal in the columnar cactus Stenocereus stellatus in a Mexican tropical desert.
  • We performed selective exclosure experiments to estimate percentage of seeds removed by ants, birds and rodents during the pre‐ and post‐dispersal phases. We also conducted field samplings to estimate abundance of the most common seed removers.
  • Birds (10–28%) removed a higher percentage of seeds than ants (2%) and rodents (1–4%) during pre‐dispersal seed removal. Melanerpes hypopolius was probably the main bird removing seeds from fruits. Ants (62–64%) removed a higher percentage of seeds than birds (34–38%) and rodents (16–30%) during post‐dispersal seed removal. Pogonomyrmex barbatus was probably the main ant removing seeds from soil.
  • Birds and ants are the main pre‐ and post‐dispersal seed removers in S. stellatus, respectively. Further studies in other S. stellatus populations and plants with different life forms and fruit types will contribute to evaluate seed removal in tropical American deserts.

The role of Pleistocene climate changes in promoting evolutionary diversification in global biota is well documented, but the great majority of data regarding this subject come from North America and Europe, which were greatly affected by glaciation. The effects of Pleistocene changes on cold‐ and/or dry‐adapted species in tropical areas where glaciers were not present remain sparsely investigated. Many such species are restricted to small areas surrounded by unfavourable habitats, which may represent potential interglacial microrefugia. Here, we analysed the phylogeographic structure and diversification history of seven cactus species in the Pilosocereus aurisetus complex that are restricted to rocky areas with high diversity and endemism within the Neotropical savannas of eastern South America. We combined palaeodistributional estimates with standard phylogeographic approaches based on two chloroplast DNA regions (trnT‐trnL and trnS‐trnG), exon 1 of the nuclear gene PhyC and 10 nuclear microsatellite loci. Our analyses revealed a phylogeographic history marked by multiple levels of distributional fragmentation, isolation leading to allopatric differentiation and secondary contact among divergent lineages within the complex. Diversification and demographic events appear to have been affected by the Quaternary climatic cycles as a result of isolation in multiple patches of xerophytic vegetation. These small patches presently harbouring P. aurisetus populations seem to operate as microrefugia, both at present and during Pleistocene interglacial periods; the role of such microrefugia should be explored and analysed in greater detail.  相似文献
