Closely related living mammal species present numerous difficulties of recognition and delineation, not least because populations as well as individual organisms fulfill both genetic and economic functions. However, since species are often distributed geographically across multiple ecosystems or environments, it is evident that species as wholes, except where coterminous with the local populations of which they are composed, cannot be said to play unitary ecological roles. Aspects of the economic activity of organisms thus may not be admitted as elements in species recognition. Those who study the behavior of mammals in their natural habitats must therefore focus upon behaviors which preserve the genetic integrity of species if they wish to contribute to the systematic question of species identification. «Isolation» concepts of species are not served by data of this kind, since they emphasize interspecies discontinuities; the «recognition» concept of species, however, specifically focuses upon behaviors of this kind as they contribute to the «Specific-Mate Recognition System». Among primates such behaviors are likely to involve signalling of various kinds; where this is visual it is reasonable to expect to find morphological or chromatic correlates; where such cues are auditory or, to a lesser extent, olfactory, it is less probable that such correlates will be found to exist. 相似文献

In order to test the Methanochondrion concept, uptake of adenine nucleotides in various membrane preparations of Methanobacterium thermoautotrophicum was studied. The uptake showed properties which are in general interpreted as indicative of a transport mechanism: (i) kinetics in the time range of minutes, (ii) temperature dependence, (iii) substrate specificity and (iv) failure to remove the substrate by extensive washing.However, nucleotide transport as an interpretation of this uptake can definitely be excluded. Not only an exchange mechanism of the mitochondrial type, but also a general exchange or an uniport mechanism was ruled out. In contrast, the nucleotide uptake was shown to be actually a tight and specific binding of ADP and ATP to binding sites at the interior side of the cell membrane. This was conclusively demonstrated in protoplasts obtained from M. thermoautotrophicum cells. In these protoplasts which do not contain internal membranes also nucleotide binding was observed, but only after disruption of the plasma membrane by osmotic lysis, which leads to the exposure of binding sites. 相似文献

The biological species concept deals both with the meaning of the sexual species as a harmonious gene pool and with its protection against deleterious outbreeding (effected by isolating mechanisms). According to the Darwin-Muller-Mayr theory isolating mechanisms are acquired by incipient species during alloparty. Isolating mechanisms are not the result of ad hoc selection, but of a change of function of properties acquired during the preceding isolation of the incipient species. The role of behavioral properties (recognition) among the isolating mechanisms has long been recognized and described by naturalists but was rejected as basis of a species definition for a number of valid reasons. 相似文献

Replidated experiments indicate an association between thermal tolerance of juvenile bluegill sunfish and adaptive pigmentation to background color. Bluegills exposed to black backgrounds were able to survive higher temperatures longer than those exposed to blond backgrounds, when water temperatures were raised at a rate of 0.1°C/h from 24 to 36°C. Plausible explanations are considered which involve heat radiation effectiveness (by the fish) related to the black body concept, and stress associated with adaptive pigmentation. 相似文献

A definition of vegetation science is given, spanning 6 levels of integration and stressing the interrelations among them. The problems of realism are discussed. The selection of levels is related to the adequate correspondence between conceptualization and research aims. Pattern and process are introduced as the central concepts of vegetation science. The perception of reality is dependent on the spatial and temporal scale chosen. The concept of noise is discussed in relation to stochasticity and randomness of events. Traces of essentialism are found both in classification of communities and habitat ecology. Classification is important, particularly the coexistence of alternative classification approaches. Organicism as a basis of vegetation research is rejected because the organismic view is inadequate on higher integration levels. The concept of function is redefined in a non-teleologic way.Present vegetation ecological research is inductivistic. One possible alternative to inductivism is falsificationism. The major domain of this approach is hypothesis testing, which will become more important. Progress can only be reached by a maximum degree of communication among scientific individuals.Predictive ecology is partly based on historic explanation, partly on complementary approaches. Characters of vegetation worthwhile to be predicted are listed and the necessary requirements for vegetation science to become predictive are discussed. A major requirement is the development of succession and life-history theory. A further elaboration of the individualistic concept will be a main task of vegetation science in the near future. 相似文献

A simple behavioral model is used to investigate whether differences in the specific-mate-recognition system (SMRS), occur within species of the Drosophila genus. This model takes into account, and overcomes, the distorting effect of vigor differences on experimental results. Analysis shows significant deviations from the expected values under the assumption of identical SMRSs in around one fifth of the multiple-choice experiments performed with natural strains of twelve different Drosophila species. Different selection procedures raise the number of significant assortative mating results between strains of D. melanogaster and D. pseudoobscura from 3.0% to 32.8%. Finally, sub- or semispecific taxa show variations in their SMRS even more frequently (74.5%). Differences in male vigor and female receptivity are also found. These results show that a classification of Drosophila species based on SMRS stability, as proposed by the “Recognition concept of species”, is virtually impossible. 相似文献

Populations of the puritan tiger beetle Cicindela puritana in the eastern United States were found to be highly threatened at the Connecticut River, whereas several large populations on the western shore and newly discovered populations on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay appeared to be less endangered. We assessed if the disjunct C. puritana subgroups are genetically distinct and therefore should be treated as separate units for conservation purposes. A total of 13 individuals from the Connecticut River and 27 individuals from the Chesapeake Bay were each analysed by sequencing of up to 837 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA per individual. Five different haplotypes could be distinguished. In a phylogenetic analysis of these DNA sequences that included four related Cicindela species as out-groups, haplotypes from the Chesapeake Bay represent a distinct clade. The conservation status of these populations was evaluated using a phylogenetic approach based on cladistic analysis and the framework of the phylogenetic species concept. According to this analysis, beetles from the Connecticut River and the Chesapeake Bay have to be considered as independent units. Populations from the eastern and western shore of Chesapeake Bay are not split in more than one unit using the same criteria, although they exhibited some degree of genetic subdivision. The results from the mtDNA analysis were corroborated by ecological parameters in that the Chesapeake Bay populations can be distinguished from all congeners by their different tat association. 相似文献

Sporophytes of Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye and E. fasciculatus Harvey were collected in the vicinity of Roscoff Brittany, France. Gametophytes derived from meiospores were used for intra- and interspecific crosses. Intraspecific gamete combinations gave viable zygotes, which developed into fertile sporophytes. Interspecific crosses were unsuccessful. Gamete fusions did not occur between female gametes of E. fasciculatus and male gametes of E. siliculosus. Hybrid zygotes were formed in the reciprocal combination but died soon after germination. We conclude that the two species of Ectocarpus at Roscoff represent distinct taxonomic entities, which are separated by pre- and postzygotic compatibility barriers. These biological findings are confirmed by the differential occurrence of the chemotaxonomic marker betaine-lipid diacetylglycerylhydroxymethyltrimethyl-β-alanine, which is present in our cultures of E. fasciculatus but absent in E. siliculosus. 相似文献

A coalescence model for predicting the fate of neutral divergence among closely related taxa distinguishable as separate DNA sequence clusters is presented here. The model simulates iteratively the positive feedback between sequence divergence and sexual isolation among taxa, where increases in sequence divergence result in reduced recombination, and reduced recombination results in increased sequence divergence. Iteration of this feedback is continued until sequence divergence either converges on a steady state or reaches a runaway process. The eventual outcome of sequence divergence was shown to depend on four estimable population-genetic parameters: the expected intrataxon sequence diversity, the baseline rate of intertaxon recombination, the sensitivity of the recombination rate to sequence divergence, and the neutral mutation rate. The model can be used to determine whether neutral divergence among actual taxa is destined to stop at an equilibrium level, or whether neutral divergence will reach a runaway process. Application of the model to the group of taxa containing Bacillus subtilis and its closest relatives showed these taxa to be on a trajectory of unbounded neutral divergence from one another. 相似文献

This paper reviews and extends the knowledge of anostracan penile morphology and its taxonomic significance. Since Linder‘s
pioneering classification(based partly on male genital characters), the morphology of both basal and distal penile parts has
been applied repeatedly to reorganize or establish higher anostracan taxa, or to extend their diagnoses. In general, the configuration
of both basal and distal penile structures follows a constant pattern in well-defined genera. Size and shape of processes
and spinulation on the basal (in Linderiella and Chirocephalidae) and the distal parts (in Parartemia), however, may show
inter-specific differences. Variability in penile structures in the current genus Brachinella indicates the need for a taxonomic
revision of this genus. Similar intra-generic penis morphology may contribute to hybridizability of congeners and validate
Dubois‘genus concept for use in anostracans.
