Siliceous remains from Miocene lacustrine sediments near Libros (Teruel, Spain) are studied. Most of them are sponge spicules and may be assigned to Ephydatia fluviatilis. Some chrysophycean cysts and several diatom genera (Melosira, Cyclotella, Fragilaria, Navicula, Pinnularia, and Cymbella) have also been found.  相似文献

Summary The primary aggregation factor (pAF) of sponge cells is a glycoprotein that is firmly associated with the cell membrane. Polyspecific antibodies (anti-GM) prepared from sera raised against membranes of cells from the siliceous sponge Geodia cydonium were found to inhibit initial aggregation of homologous cells. The inhibition of aggregation, caused by anti-GM was neutralized by pAF. The pAF had been successfully solubilized and enriched by affinity chromatography, gel filtration and density gradient centrifugation, if checked by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of urea. The Mr of the native pAF was approximately 40 000 as estimated by gel filtration; under denaturing conditions three protein species (Mr: 16 500, 15 500 and 13 500) were identified in the pAF preparation. The pAF was precipitable by Ca++ and did not cross-react with antisera against homologous purified secondary aggregation factor and lectin. It is mainly composed of protein (48.0%) and carbohydrate (50.2%). The isolated pAF restored the aggregation potency not only of factor-depleted Geodia cells but also of cells from other Demospongiae. However, the pAF displayed no aggregation enhancing effect on urea-treated cells from species belonging to the Calcispongiae or Hexactinellida. We hypothesize that in contrast to the secondary aggregation, the initial aggregation of Geodia cells is mediated by the one-component system, the bivalent and bifunctional pAF.  相似文献

A survey of Connecticut lakes and rivers revealed the presence of 7 species of freshwater sponge: Spongilla lacustris, Ephydatia muelleri, Eunapius fragilis, Anheteromeyenia ryderi, A. argyrosperma, Corvomeyenia carolinensis, and Corvospongilla novaeterrae in order of decreasing frequency of occurrence. Corvomeyenia carolinensis has not been reported previously beyond its type locality in South Carolina. In addition, microscleres of Spongilla lacustris, Anheteromeyenia-like megascleres, Ephydatia muelleri-like megascleres, and smooth megascleres (amphioxeas), which could not be assigned to a particular species, were found in surface sediments from lake cores. Spongilla lacustris inhabiting small rivers produced brown, thick-capsuled gemmules during the summer and yellow, thin-capsuled gemmules during the fall. The thick-capsuled gemmules, but not the thin-capsuled gemmules, are tolerant of desiccation; and populations of Spongilla lacustris and Ephydatia muelleri survived severe drying of their habitats during the summer.  相似文献

Aquatic habitats in the Republic of Panamá were examined for freshwater sponges during 21 Feb. to 6 March 1986. Eunapius carteri, Trochospongilla leidyi, and Trochospongilla horrida were found in the northern canal area. This is the first report of E. carteri and T. horrida from Central America, and the first record of E. carteri from the Western Hemisphere. Taxonomic characters used to distinguish T. leidyi and T. horrida from similar South American species are discussed.  相似文献

A bdellovibrio-like bacterium was observed infecting unicellular symbiotic cyanobacteria in two coral reef sponges, Neofibularia irata and Jaspis stellifera. The infecting bacterium, which was located between the cell wall and the cytoplasmic membrane of the cyanobacteria, was similar in size and appearance to previously described bdellovibrios. This observation is believed to extend the host range of the bdellovibrios.  相似文献

The biosynthesis of non-ribosomal peptide and polyketide natural products is facilitated by multimodular enzymes that contain domains responsible for the sequential condensation of amino and carboxylic subunits. These conserved domains provide molecular targets for the discovery of natural products from microbial metagenomes. This study demonstrates the application of tag-encoded FLX amplicon pyrosequencing (TEFAP) targeting non-ribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) and polyketide synthase (PKS) genes as a method for determining the identity and diversity of natural product biosynthesis genes. To validate this approach, we assessed the diversity of NRPS and PKS genes within the microbiomes of six Australian marine sponge species using both TEFAP and metagenomic whole-genome shotgun sequencing approaches. The TEFAP approach identified 100 novel ketosynthase (KS) domain sequences and 400 novel condensation domain sequences within the microbiomes of the six sponges. The diversity of KS domains within the microbiome of a single sponge species Scopalina sp. exceeded that of any previously surveyed marine sponge. Furthermore, this study represented the first to target the condensation domain from NRPS biosynthesis and resulted in the identification of a novel condensation domain lineage. This study highlights the untapped potential of Australian marine sponges for the isolation of novel bioactive natural products. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that TEFAP approaches can be applied to functional genes, involved in natural product biosynthesis, as a tool to aid natural product discovery. It is envisaged that this approach will be used across multiple environments, offering an insight into the biological processes that influence the production of secondary metabolites.  相似文献

Analysis of the sterol fraction obtained from the Colombian Caribbean sponge Topsentia ophiraphidites revealed that this sponge is a rich source of C30 and C31 sterols. Among them, a new C31 sterol, named ophirasterol, was isolated, and its structure was established as (22E,24R)-24-(1-buten-2-yl)cholesta-5,22-dien-3beta-ol (1) by spectral means and comparison with synthetic C-24 epimers with known configuration. Other isolated C30 and C31 sterols were the known 24-ethyl-24-methyl-22-dehydrocholesterol (2), 24-isopropyl-22-dehydrocholesterol (3), 24-isopropylcholesterol (4), 24-ethyl-24-methylcholesterol (5), 24-isopropenyl-25-methyl-22-dehydrocholesterol (6) and 24-isopropenyl-25-methylcholesterol (7), and 24-isopropenyl-22-dehydrocholesterol (8).  相似文献
