Promiscuous mating systems provide the opportunity for females to bias fertilization toward particular males. However, distinguishing between male sperm competition and active female sperm choice is difficult for species with internal fertilization. Nevertheless, species that store and use sperm of different males in different storing structures and species where females are able to expel all or part of the ejaculates after copulation may be able to bias fertilization. We report a series of experiments aimed at providing evidence of female sperm choice in Euxesta eluta (Hendel), a species of ulidiid fly that expels and consumes ejaculates after copulation. We found no evidence of greater reproductive success for females mated singly, multiply with the same male, or mated multiply with different males. Female E. eluta possesses two spherical spermathecae and a bursa copulatrix for sperm storage, with a ventral receptacle. There was no significant difference in storing more sperm in spermathecae 24 h after copulation than immediately after copulation. Females mated with protein-fed males had greater reproductive success than similar females mated to protein-deprived males. Protein-fed females prevented to consume the ejaculate, retained more sperm when mated to protein-fed males than when mated to protein-deprived males. Our results suggest that female E. eluta can exert control of sperm retention of higher quality males through ejaculate ejection.  相似文献

Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is a widely distributed pest species of soft-skinned fruits. Recent studies suggest the use of sterile insect technique (SIT) as a control method for this species; however, many factors can impact effectiveness of a SIT programme, including the environmental conditions. Environmental condition is critical at the time of the release and in the days afterwards, since it may impact sterile insects’ survival and ability to mate. Thus, we verified the influence of temperature and relative humidity on mating and survival of fertile and sterile D. suzukii, when insects were food provided or deprived. Highest mating rates occurred when sterile or fertile flies provided with food were exposed to 25ºC or 81%–100% relative humidity, while temperatures of 10 and 35ºC and humidity below 60% impaired mating. Overall, mating rate among food-deprived flies was low in all temperatures and humidity levels tested, but fertile insects were more prone to mate when compared to sterile flies. Survival was negatively influenced by high temperatures, low relative humidity and food deprivation. The information present in this study is useful to be considered for release of sterile D. suzukii.  相似文献

The hypothesis that prolonged copulatory mate guarding coexistswith last male sperm precedence was tested for the sugarcanerootstalk borer weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus (L.) (Coleoptera:Curculionidae). Male D. abbreviatus showed a long copulatoryguarding. Both males and females were less likely to rematewhen prolonged guarding occurred compared with terminating copulationearly. Guarding was generally terminated by the struggling behaviorof the female. Mating experiments using normal and sterile (X-rayirradiated) males revealed a similar value of last-male spermprecedence for both irradiated and normal males. The P2 valuesof normal and sterile males were similar when all ovipositedeggs were counted over 30 days. These data made it possibleto calculate the expected gain to a male from prolonged guardingcompared with leaving a female early and seeking out an additionalmate. We show that guarding has the higher fitness. Eggs weredeposited in clutches in which normal fertilized eggs were groupedtogether and were attached to a group of sterile eggs. This,together with identifying the form of the cul-de-sac typespermatheca,allowed us to suggest a unique repositioning process, whichhas not been described elsewhere, as the likely mechanism bywhich last-male sperm precedence was achieved.  相似文献

Wolbachia are endosymbiotic bacteria known to manipulate the reproduction of their hosts by, for example, inducing parthenogenesis. In most cases of Wolbachia‐induced parthenogenesis, the infection is fixed and the entire host population consists of females. In the absence of males and sexual reproduction, genes involved in sexual reproduction are not actively maintained by selection. Accumulation of neutral mutations or selection against maintenance of sexual traits may lead to their loss or deterioration. In addition, females may lose the ability to reproduce sexually due to ‘functional virginity mutations’ that may spread concomitantly with the Wolbachia infection through a population. The parasitoid wasp Tetrastichus coeruleus (Nees) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) forms an ideal model to study the decay of sexual functionality, because it has both Wolbachia‐infected, parthenogenetic populations and uninfected, sexual populations. We compared several components of sexual functionality of arrhenotokous (sexual) and thelytokous (parthenogenetic) T. coeruleus females. First, we tested whether arrhenotokous and thelytokous females were equally attractive and receptive to males. Second, we examined whether mating is costly to females by measuring the life span of mated and virgin females. Last, we studied the morphology of the spermathecae of arrhenotokous and thelytokous females. Mated females had shorter life spans than virgin females, showing that mating carried a fitness cost. Two sexual traits of thelytokous females have degraded compared to arrhenotokous females. Arrhenotokous and thelytokous females were equally attractive to males, but thelytokous females were unreceptive to males. Furthermore, there was a clear difference in spermathecal morphology between arrhenotokous and thelytokous females. Our data do not allow distinction between the various potential causes of such degradation. Although the longevity cost of mating may indicate selection against the maintenance of costly sexual traits, accumulation of neutral mutations, functional virginity mutations, manipulation by Wolbachia, and/or the genetic distance between the two populations may all have contributed to the decay of sexual traits in thelytokous females.  相似文献

Previous research has documented low frequencies of interspecific mating in nature between the invasive vectors Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. It is also known that heterospecific male accessory gland substances transferred during mating sterilize A. aegypti but not A. albopictus females, leading to satyrization, a form of reproductive interference. This paper demonstrates that satyrization of A. aegypti by A. albopictus may occur without evidence of successful insemination. Our results show that A. aegypti females, previously exposed to A. albopictus males, are rendered refractory to subsequent conspecific mating even though their spermathecae contain no heterospecific sperm. Additional experiments demonstrating transfer of labelled semen from A. albopictus males to A. aegypti females and low production of viable eggs of females housed with conspecific males, following exposure to A. albopictus males, confirm higher incidences of satyrization than expected, based on heterospecific insemination rates. We conclude that frequencies of satyrization based on detection of interspecific sperm in spermathecae may underestimate the impact of this form of reproductive interference.  相似文献

The testes, seminal vesicles and spermathecae of 22 species of mosquitoes belonging to the genera Aedes, Anopheles, Culex, Mansonia and Toxorhynchites are investigated under the electron microscope. Modifications of the acrosome and sperm wall occur during the transit of the spermatozoon from the lower region of the testes to the spermathecae throughout the seminal vesicles. The origin and fate of the cell coat and the possible roles of somatic cell layers both in the testes and the seminal vesicles are discussed.  相似文献

利用显微光镜和超微电镜技术观察明确了扶桑绵粉蚧雌成虫卵巢及相关结构的变化,结果表明该虫的内生殖系统含1对卵巢、输卵管、储精囊和1对附腺.每个卵巢有数以百计的端滋式卵巢小管.卵巢小管缺末端纤丝,包含滋养部分和卵黄部分.储精囊表面被丰富的肌原纤维包裹,未经交配的雌虫体内储精囊在显微镜下呈透明状圆形,电镜观察囊内只含液态物质;交配后,储精囊不再维持规则的球状,囊内出现精细胞等物质;精细胞呈典型的“9+2”结构.在初孵化的雌性成虫体内,卵巢小管内的滋养细胞部分中间为营养核,以此联接滋养细胞和卵细胞.卵黄部分包含1个卵细胞.雌性成虫只有通过交配,卵巢内的胚胎才可得以顺利发育;若未经交配,卵巢内的卵细胞将出现发达的内质网结构,标志着细胞将降解而被母体重吸收.  相似文献

Sperm storage within the female reproductive tract has been reported as a reproductive strategy in several species of vertebrates and invertebrates. However, the morphological structures that allow for sperm to be stored and kept viable for long periods are relatively unknown in osteichthyes. We use histological and stereological tools to identify and quantify sperm storage structures (spermathecae) in 12 species of viviparous Poeciliidae. We found spermathecae in nine species, six of which exhibit superfetation (the ability of females to simultaneously carry within the ovary two or more broods of embryos at different stages of development). These spermathecae are folds of ovarian tissue that close around spermatozoa. We compared the number and size (volume) of spermathecae between species with and without superfetation. Species that exhibit superfetation had a significantly higher number of spermathecae than species that do not exhibit this reproductive strategy. In addition, we found that the mean volume of spermathecae and total volume of spermathecae present in the ovary are marginally higher in species with superfetation. Our results contribute to the understanding of the morphological structures that allow for sperm storage in viviparous osteichthyes and suggest a positive relationship between superfetation and the capacity of females to store sperm.  相似文献
