In 1992 and 1993, potato cultivars Cara, Estima, Pentland Dell, Pentland Javelin and Torridon were assessed in all possible pairings in three consecutive drills, such that one member of the pair (the cultivar) was the centre-drill, and the other member (the neighbour) was in the two adjacent drills. Each year the trial was a randomised complete block design with four replicates. Inter-cultivar competition was present for height, total tuber yield, ware yield and dry matter content, but not for emergence and maturity. Cultivar heights and dry matter contents under inter-cultivar competition and in pure-stands were highly correlated, whereas for total and ware yields, the rankings of cultivars in pure-stands were different from those under competition. Pure-stand yields were predicted for the two years separately because of year × cultivar and year × neighbour interactions. When the average total yield of the outer-drills was used as a covariate to adjust centre-drill yields to pure-stands, predicted yields were closer to those observed than were yields under competition, but there was little improvement in the correlations. In contrast, not only were the predicted values even closer to the observed ones when based on individual neighbour effects, the correlations were much higher (r = 0.76–0.94). Unfortunately, in plant breeding trials with large numbers of entries, precise estimation of individual neighbour effects would require an unrealistically large number of replicates. Hence, for the final stages of yield assessment of new cultivars, it is still desirable to use multiple-drill plots and to discard the outside drills where inter-cultivar competition can occur.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to assess the significance of inter-plot competition in a yield trial of potato cultivars. Seventeen cultivars were deliberately chosen and assessed for yield in single-drill and four-drill plots. Inter-plot competition for fresh-weight yield was a significant factor in the single-drill plots. It was modelled using a common competition coefficient with a covariate based on neighbour fresh-weight yields. In contrast, there was no statistically significant inter-plot competition for specific gravity. After adjustment for inter-plot competition, varietal ranking in estimated monoculture yield differed little from that based on unadjusted means. However, there was a reduction in the range of yield estimates, and a closer agreement with the observed pure-stand yields from the inner two drills of the four-drill plots. The adjustment for monoculture performance was most pronounced for the higher and lower yielding varieties, as expected from the assumption that the performance of high yielding varieties was enhanced in a competitive environment at the expense of low yielding ones. A general and flexible method of estimating competition coefficients in variety trials, together with a suitable algorithm, was developed and is explained in an appendix. It was used to check for inter-plot competition in a number of potato trials with single-drill plots and a large number of entries. Competition was found in some trials but not in others. Thus, where potato tubers are grown in single-drill plots for assessment of fresh-weight yield, adjustment should be made for inter-plot competition when evidence of inter-drill competition is found.  相似文献

Frost damage to potatoes, grapevine and citrus plants was assessed following treatment with either an acrylic polymer (Antistress?) or with a hydrophobic particle film (CM‐96–018). In large freezing tests, the application of the hydrophobic particle film consistently led to less damage whilst the acrylic polymer led to the same amount or more damage when compared to control plants. Detailed examination of the freezing of leaves of all three species using infrared thermal imaging revealed that the hydrophobic particle film delayed the entry of ice from a frozen water droplet containing ice nucleating active bacteria and in some cases for the complete duration of the frost test. In contrast, the acrylic polymer was only able to influence the time of ice nucleation of the leaves of citrus plants. It was concluded that the hydrophobic particle film shows considerable promise as a frost protectant applied to susceptible crops just prior to a freezing event.  相似文献

The goal of the research is to determine the effect of pretreated poultry manure and irrigation on the yield and quality of potatoes (Solanum tuberosum) grown in fields located on the southern steppe of the Republic of Bashkortostan. Field experiments were repeated every three years. During vegetation, potato leaves and tubers were studied at the full blossom, leaves’ decay, and potato harvest. The results showed that applying pretreated poultry manure at the rate of 120 t/ha favored higher tuber weight both on the rainfed and irrigated plots (from 0.23 to 0.82 kg/plant and from 0.24 to 1.02 kg/plant, respectively). On the rainfed and irrigated plots where poultry mature was not applied (control fields) the tubers’ weight ranged from 0.08 to 0.31 kg/plant and from 0.16 to 0.50 kg/plant, respectively. Upon application of 40 t/ha of manure, under irrigation, the highest marketable value of tubers was 78%. On the rainfed plots the same value was 72% when applying poultry manure at a dose of 120 t/ha. Soil moisture monitoring showed that the potatoes did not get adequate water during the growing season. When the soil moisture on irrigated plots was 70% less than its minimum water capacity, potato plantings were watered.  相似文献

Frost injury to plants can occur following episodic radiation frosts. In the UK this is particularly important to spring sown crops such as potatoes. Most laboratory based frost studies simulate freezing using either conductive or convective freezing chambers. Such frost tests do not simulate overnight freezing events adequately. A freezing chamber based on radiative cooling is described which mimics overnight radiative freezing. The chamber is rectangular in design (1 m × lm × 2 m high) with a radiative cooling plate at the top of the chamber cooled to -40°C to -45°C using HFC coolants, which acts as a cold black body. The sides of the chamber are also cooled to variable temperatures down to -5°C in order to prevent the chamber walls radiating to the plant material during testing. Using thermocouples to measure air temperature and plant temperature the chamber has been characterised to simulate the radiative cooling conditions found in the UK during autumn and spring. Exotherm detection upon plant freezing is simplified by virtue of the reduction in temperature fluctuation normally experienced at the plant surface during natural freezing. Radiation frosts and subsequent frost damage to potatoes have been recorded in the temperature range -4°C to –5°C. The equipment is recommended for studies of frost damage to plants normally caused by episodic radiation frost events.  相似文献

Potato cyst nematodes (PCN) have been known to occur in the UK for nearly a hundred years. They are the most problematic pests of potatoes and can cause severe yield losses. Previous work has shown the two species, Globodera rostochiensis and G pallida, to be distributed throughout the UK. This paper reports the results of the first structured and statistically unbiased survey undertaken to assess their occurrence and distribution in the potato growing land of England and Wales. The survey showed that PCN were present in 64% of sites sampled. Of the populations found, 67% were G pallida, 8% were G rostochiensis and 25% contained both species. The results show an increase in the incidence of PCN since previous studies were completed and confirm the perceived shift towards G pallida as the predominant species. Of the infestations found, 62% had a population density of less than 10 eggs g?1 soil.  相似文献

Genotype by environment interactions in a number of field trials in different years are examined in relation to tolerance of potato cyst nematodes and the subsequent yield losses. A biplot technique is used to display the interaction effects graphically and facilitate identification of any patterns in the data. Genetically modified potatoes expressing antibacterial protein T4 lysozyme may offer effective control strategies for bacterial pathogens causing severe potato diseases. Apart from this beneficial effect, it is very important to investigate such engineered potatoes carefully for potential adverse effects on potato-associated bacteria which frequently exhibit plant beneficial functions such as plant growth promotion and antagonism towards pathogens invading the plant. Two field experiments were carried out in Spain to analyze the potential effects of conventional and genetically modified T4-lysozyme producing potatoes on shoot-associated bacteria. The first baseline field trial 2002 was performed in Meliana in which three conventional potato lines, Achirana Inta, Desirée, and Merkur, were cultivated and sampled at flowering. The second field trial was conducted in Cella in 2003 in order to compare the effects of a senescent transgenic, T4 lysozyme expressing potato trait, Desirée DL 12, with its isogenic, non-transformed parental line Desirée. Structural characteristics of potato shoot-associated bacteria was assayed by 16S rRNA-based terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis and dominant community members within T-RFLP profiles were identified by sequence analysis of generated 16S rRNA gene libraries. Cultivable bacteria isolated from shoots of potatoes grown in the Meliana field trial were monitored for antibiosis against Ralstonia solanacearum, whereas isolates derived from shoots of potatoes cultivated in the Cella trial were screened for antagonism against Ralstonia solanacearum and Rhizoctonia solani, and for 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase production. Determined antagonists were identified by 16S rRNA gene analysis. All potato traits hosted a cultivar-specific community of bacteria with antagonism against the pathogens and/or potential to produce ACC deaminase. Several antagonists obtained from the Cella field potatoes were also observed as ACC deaminase producers. Community profiling revealed a greater diversity differentiation between the senescent T4 lysozyme expressing and parental Desirée lines grown in the Cella field as compared to the variations between the three flowering conventional lines cultivated in the Meliana field trial. Effects of the two varying field sites and different vegetation stages were greater than those of T4 lysozyme when investigating the community composition of bacteria colonizing the shoots of the Desirée line cultivated in both field trials.  相似文献

Genotypes of Solanum tuberosum, assessed for their differential response to a protoplast regeneration protocol, were identified. This enabled comparisons to be made in relation to their abilities to regenerate into dividing cells and colonies. Protoplasts from genotypes with contrasting regeneration responses were plated as single or mixed genotype cultures at various plating densities in replicated, randomised experiments, and the effect on the regeneration of particular cell types observed. Protoplasts from single genotype cultures showed intergenotypic variation in the extent of cell regeneration and there were significant effects of genotype mixing and density × genotype mixing interactions. Overall, the effect of mixing was beneficial to a regenerating culture but significant density genotype mixing interactions showed only a positive benefit at the lowest plating density. The protoplast mixing phenomenon was not correlated with the behaviour of the same genotypes at the plantlet level in experiments with in vitro meristem cultures.  相似文献
