The Guadix-Baza Basin in Spain covers an area of approximately 3000 km2 and yields a sedimentary sequence ranging from Lower Miocene to Pleistocene. Twenty five meters of Lower Pleistocene lacustrine sediments have been located in the NE part of the Basin at about 1000 meters in altitude. This sequence which overlies dolomitic mud flat deposits consists of limestones, calcareous and dolomitic mudstones, dolostones, silty clays, sands and gravels. Salinity fluctuations and short dry episodes, related to lake level oscillations, have been recorded by textural, mineralogical and faunal changes throughout the sequence. Ostracods, which are the most commonly encountered fossils, permit to detect recurrent changes in water salinity and regime, and solute composition. The faunal changes indicate an alternation of slightly saline and bicarbonate-rich water (when ostracods and gastropods occur) with a saline NaCl-dominant water (in which ostracods, Cerastoderma bivalves and non-marine foraminifers are found). The frequent and recurrent hydrochemical changes in the Baza Basin in the Early Pleistocene point to a climate of high contrast like in the Mediterranean region today but with a greater availability of water within the system compared to the present situation in the area.  相似文献

A rich and varied meiofauna inhabits a Cornish mudflat near the mouth of the Tamar River in southwestern England. Population densities range from 117 to 943 individuals · g–1 (wet) sediment (1.4–11.4 × 106 individuals · m–2), with foraminifera, harpacticoid copepods and nematodes appearing in nearly equal numbers and comprising most of the meiofauna. Seasonally, meiofaunal numbers rise and fall with solar radiation and vary inversely with river discharge. Two species, the atestate allogromiid A and the calcareous Haynesina germanica (Ehrenberg), far outnumber other foraminifera; their population densities and growth rates reach maxima in spring and summer.Monthly rates of sediment respiration are locally variable, but clearly increase from winter (4.13 ml O2 · m–2 · h–1 in December) to spring (38.87 ml O2 · m–2 · h–1 in April). Experiments and calculations ascribe approximately 30% of this total to the meiofauna (including microfauna and microflora), 50% to bacteria and less than 20% to chemical oxidation. A tentative energy budget for the mudflat suggests that secondary production by meiofauna is small as compared with coastal environments elsewhere, and that meiofaunal production (426 Kcal · m–2 · y–1) is nearly twice meiofaunal respiration (252 Kcal · m–2 · yr–1).  相似文献

A method for identifying ecophenotypic variants is tested, using two morphological variants of the benthic foraminifer Reophax dentaliniformis Brady from the Baltic Sea. Results show that the example does not correspond to the model for ecophenotypic variation. This is interpreted as showing that the two forms are genetically differentiated and that the gene flow between them is restricted by the water circulation pattern in the Baltic.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Planktonic sarcodines, suspended in the water column, are conveniently grouped into three categories based on functional morphology: (1) gymnamoebae and their relatives, which lack major living or nonliving compartmentalizing barriers, (2) foraminifera, and testate amoebae enclosed by a test or shell with one or more major openings, but lacking extensive cytoplasmic compartmentalizing barriers, and (3) radiolaria, which exhibit distinct compartmentalization of the cytoplasm into functional zones. Differences in feeding strategies and trophic activity of members in the three groups reflect in part these differences in functional morphology. Members of all three groups form symbiotic associations with Monera and protists, including algae, thus partially offsetting interspecific trophic competition among species occupying the same water mass. Physiological and morphological adaptations supporting a symbiotic association are presented. C14-labeling studies of endosymbiotic radiolarian species show a substantial contribution of carbon to the host. Rates of calcification (planktonic foraminfera) and silica deposition (radiolaria) are reported, based on morphometric analyses and isotopic labeling studies. Major distributional patterns in space and time for each of the three groups, and some ecological principles explaining these regularities, are presented as related to population growth dynamics, niche differentiation, water-mass properties, and the role of symbionts in supporting highly diverse communities of species within the same locale in the water column.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. During gametogenesis mother individuals of Hastigerina pelagica (d'Orbigny) undergo significant morphological changes. Thirty h before gamete release, the cytoplasm changes from pale orange to bright red, possibly due to transport of stored lipids from the inner region to more peripheral parts of the cytoplasm. During the next 10 to 15 h the bubble capsule which surounds the calcareous shell is discarded. After all bubbles have disappeared, the individual sheds its spines by resorbing the spine bases close to the shell surface. A single mother nucleus divides into some hundreds of thousands of gamete nuclei within a span of ~ 20 h. A bulge of cytoplasm is extruded from the aperture and increases in size during the next 5 to 10 h. This bulge consists of cytoplasmic strands in which gametes and spherical bodies are embedded. The gametes and spherical bodies mature and are released during the afternoon and early evening. The gametes have 2 unequal acronematic flagella. A previously undescribed structure in foraminiferal reproduction is the spherical body which consists of a large vacuole surrounded by a thin cytoplasmic layer in which several nuclei, various typical cell organelles and multiple flagella are present. The spherical bodies are believed to play a role as receptacles of waste material, possibly including residual digestive enzymes, thereby protecting the gametes from lysis during the reproductive process. Fusion of gametes and further development into the next generation have not been observed.  相似文献

A first and detailed foraminiferal biostratigraphic work on the lower part of the Zongshan Formation (Limestone I and Calcareous Marl I sequence) in the Chaqiela section, Gamba, southern Tibet, allows the recognition of three latest Coniacian to middle Campanian planktic foraminiferal biozones: Dicarinella asymetrica Total Range Zone, Globotruncanita elevata Partial-Range Zone, and Contusotruncana plummerae Interval Zone. The base and top of the Santonian Stage in the Chaqiela section were placed at the lowest occurrence (LO) of Globotruncana linneiana and the highest occurrence (HO) of Dicarinella asymetrica, respectively. The deposition of the latest Coniacian to middle Campanian sediments of the lower Zongshan Formation in the Chaqiela section seems to have been continuous or at least without any major gap based on the planktic foraminiferal biozones and events.  相似文献

Cyclostratigraphical analysis of the foraminiferal assemblages from the Early Toarcian at the Mochras Farm Borehole (Wales) was conducted in order to evaluate the incidence of cyclic palaeoenvironmental changes on the foraminiferal community. Different variables such as type of morphogroup, evolutionary strategy, habitat, particular taxa, diversity and abundance were studied using the Lomb–Scargle periodogram implemented in the computer program SLOMBS. A well‐developed cyclostratigraphical pattern is recognized, with the presence of several cycles (in metres) at 3.4–4/7.2–7.5/10.1–10.6/32.1–33.3/104.2–111.2/128.2/166.7, belonging to the high‐, middle‐, middle‐/low‐, and low‐frequency bands. The incidence and relevance of the cycles is found to be related to particular variables marking the global and local character of the involved processes. Cyclic changes in the organic matter input are found to be the most relevant palaeoenvironmental factor, oxygenation being secondary. A correspondence with specific Milankovitch cycles is, at present, difficult to determine.  相似文献

Shells of calcifying foraminifera play a major role in marine biogeochemical cycles; fossil shells form important archives for paleoenvironment reconstruction. Despite their importance in many Earth science disciplines, there is still little consensus on foraminiferal shell mineralization. Geochemical, biochemical, and physiological studies showed that foraminiferal shell formation might take place through various and diverse mineralization mechanisms. In this study, we contribute to benthic foraminiferal shell calcification through deciphering crystallite organization within the shells. We base our conclusions on results gained from electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) measurements and describe microstructure/texture characteristics within the laminated shell walls of the benthic, symbiontic foraminifera: Ammonia tepida, Amphistegina lobifera, Amphistegina lessonii. We highlight crystallite assembly patterns obtained on differently oriented cuts and discuss crystallite sizes, morphologies, interlinkages, orientations, and co-orientation strengths. We show that: (i) crystals within benthic foraminiferal shells are mesocrystals, (ii) have dendritic-fractal morphologies and (iii) interdigitate strongly. Based on crystal size, we (iv) differentiate between the two layers that comprise the shells and demonstrate that (v) crystals in the septa have different assemblies relative to those in the shell walls. We highlight that (vi) at junctions of different shell elements the axis of crystal orientation jumps abruptly such that their assembly in EBSD maps has a bimodal distribution. We prove (vii) extensive twin-formation within foraminiferal calcite; we demonstrate (viii) the presence of two twin modes: 60°/[0 0 1] and 77°/~[6 –6 1] and visualize their distributions within the shells. In a broader perspective, we draw conclusions on processes that lead to the observed microstructure/texture patterns.  相似文献

Larger foraminifera of the Late Paleocene–Early Eocene lower slope to toe-of-slope deposits of the southern Galala, Egypt, are described. Sulcocassidina nakkadyi n. gen. et sp. (base) and Vacuolicassidella dakhlensis n. gen. et sp. (top) represent a phylogenetic line related to the family Cassidinidae (new family), superfamily Miscellanacea (new superfamily) in the latest Paleocene (shallow benthic zone 4) of the southern Galala, Egypt. In addition, Oscucassidella cassis n. gen. et sp., Pellatispiroides youssefi n. gen. et sp. and Chordcassidella ainshamsiana n. gen. et sp. are described and illustrated. Genus: Pomerolina n. gen. (Type species: Alveolina meandrina Carter, 1861, is newly erected and it belongs to Cassidinidae. In this family, the chambers are initially arranged streptospirally, whereas in later stages they are planispirally enrolled. Lateral chamberlets (retral process) are separated from the laminae by a passage and a marginal crest is added during growth.  相似文献
