In South America, the order Atheriniformes includes the monophyletic genus Odontesthes with 20 species that inhabit freshwater, estuarine and coastal environments. Pejerrey Odontesthes argentinensis is widely distributed in coastal and estuarine areas of the Atlantic Ocean and is known to foray into estuaries of river systems, particularly in conditions of elevated salinity. However, to our knowledge, a landlocked self-sustaining population has never been recorded. In this study, we examined the pejerrey population of Salada de Pedro Luro Lake (south-east of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) to clarify its taxonomic identity. An integrative taxonomic analysis based on traditional meristic, landmark-based morphometrics and genetic techniques suggests that the Salada de Pedro Luro pejerrey population represents a novel case of physiological and morphological adaptation of a marine pejerrey species to a landlocked environment and emphasises the environmental plasticity of this group of fishes.  相似文献

Parts of the Arctic charr population of the subarctic Lake Visjön in north-west Sweden migrate upstream during the spring to two small, recently eutrophied and very productive lakes. Large repeat migrants arrive first, followed by young first-time migrants. Charr in the small lakes grow more rapidly than those resident in L. Visjön. In early September mature fish leave the lakes, followed by immature fish later in September and in October. Overwintering and spawning takes place in L. Visjön. Migratory females attain maturity at age 4 years and resident females at age 6 years. The migrant fish return annually until they are 5–6 years old. This limit may be due to reduced relative growth benefits of the habitat shift for larger individuals. The rapid development of these regular habitat shifts could be explained by an internally fixed exploratory behaviour in these Arctic charr that makes the detection and utilization of distant feeding resources possible. Migrants will possess a considerably higher fitness, if survival rates for migratory and resident fish are equal.  相似文献

Variation in the vertebral number of the puyen grande Galaxias platei was examined for specimens from 22 localities that span the entire distribution range of the species (from 40° to 55° S). The mean vertebral number (NMW) increases towards high latitudes, i.e. Jordan's rule is applicable to this species. Owing to the wide geographic variation of the species, not only in latitude but also in altitude, the most explicative variable for NMW was mean winter air temperature, showing negative dependence. Morphological data suggest that the increment in vertebral number lies in the pre‐pelvic region of the trunk and in the caudal region, but not in the segment between pelvic‐fin insertion and the origin of the anal fin. As these alterations in body shape have important consequences for hydrodynamics and swimming performance, vertebral number variation in G. platei also holds implications for both individual and population fitness.  相似文献

A freshwater population of the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus, was sampled during summer and autumn 1979, from the Bronx River, New York. Other occurrences in freshwater of this common estuarine cyprinodontid fish have been noted in Pennsylvania, New Hampshire and Canada. In the Bronx River, this species is a significant part of the fauna and is one of the few species found throughout the river system. Specimens were examined to determine the growth and diet. It appears that this freshwater population does not differ from its brackish water conspecifics with respect to age structure, growth rate and feeding behavior.  相似文献

Lake Biwa is an ancient freshwater lake that was formed approximately 4 Mya and harbours many coastal plants that commonly inhabit the seashore. We used chloroplast DNA haplotype analysis using two spacer sequences and simple sequence repeat (SSR) analysis using eight nuclear microsatellite markers to detect genomic signatures indicating long‐term isolation of inland populations of Calystegia soldanella in Lake Biwa from coastal populations. We used 348 samples from 63 populations for haplotype analysis and 478 samples from 27 populations for SSR analysis covering the inland and coastal distribution of the species. We detected seven haplotypes, and the distribution pattern of these haplotypes was geographically highly structured between Lake Biwa and the coast. Nuclear SSR analysis also supported genetic differentiation between Lake Biwa and coastal populations (analyses of molecular variance, 43%), and the grouping of Lake Biwa and coastal populations by a Neighbour‐joining tree. In addition, genetic diversity of the inland populations (mean HE = 0.153) was significantly lower than that of coastal populations (mean HE = 0.328). These results suggested that inland populations at Lake Biwa have been isolated from coastal populations for a very long time. Waterfalls may affect fish distribution and genetic structure within drainage networks even to the extent of leading evolutionary events. Here, parallel evolution was studied by focusing on waterfall and the landlocked freshwater goby Rhinogobius sp. YB (YB), which evolved from amphidromous R. brunneus (BR). The fish fauna was surveyed at 30 sites in 11 rivers on Iriomote Island, Japan, the geography of which was characterized by terraces/tablelands with many waterfalls. We found that all YB individuals were distributed only above waterfalls (height 6.8-58.7 m), whereas BR, and other fishes, were mostly distributed below waterfalls. Mitochondrial DNA analysis showed that every YB local population above the waterfall was independently evolved from BR. In contrast, cluster analysis of nine morphological characters, such as fin color and body pattern, showed that the morphology of YB individuals held a similarity beyond the genetic divergence, suggesting parallel evolution has occurred relating to their morphology. Genetic distance between each YB local population and BR was significantly correlated with waterfall height (r(2) = 0.94), suggesting that the waterfalls have been heightened due to the constant geological erosion and that their height represents the isolation period of YB local populations from BR (ca. 11,000-88,000 years). Each local population of BR was once landlocked in upstream by waterfall formation, consequently evolving to YB in each site. Although the morphology of YB had a high degree of similarity among local populations, finer scale analysis showed that the morphology of YB was significantly correlated with the genetic distance from BR. Consequently, there could be simultaneous multiple phases of allopatric/parallel evolution of the goby due to variations in waterfall height on this small island.  相似文献

Silvering of the skin, reduced condition factor, elevated gill Na+, K+-ATPase activity and well-developed capacity to regulate the osmotic and ionic balance in sea water were observed in 1 and 2 year old hatchery-reared Saimaa landlocked salmon Salmo salar m. sebago during April-June. Loss of hypoosmoregulatory ability and gill Na+K+-ATPase activity was observed earlier in 2 year than 1 year old fish. Coincident with changes associated with smolting both age groups showed diminished osmoregulatory capacity in fresh water. Slow growth during May-June may also be attributed to osmoregulatory difficulties in fresh water. These results support the suggestion that the developmental changes at smolting are seasonal and unrelated to any salinity changes and the idea of smolting as evidence of maladaptation of the fish to fresh water.  相似文献

We examined the morphological variability (23 morphometric traits) among individual Galaxias platei ( N  = 380) collected from 20 postglacial lakes in the southern Andes. The lakes were chosen to cover the latitudinal range of the species in Patagonia. Diet examined for a subset of these fish ( N  = 261) collected during the summer months (January through March), differed among river basins but there were no clear latitudinal trends in the consumption of any prey type. Diet may, however, have partially shaped morphology, as pelvic measures were negatively correlated with consumption of amphipods. Substantial differentiation among populations was observed, primarily in the shape and dimensions of the head, in caudal morphology and in fin length. We examined the possible adaptation of the dwarf Bleke population of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar from Lake Byglandsfjord in southern Norway to limited food resources. The growth performance and muscle development in juvenile Bleke and farmed S. salar under satiated or restricted (50%) feeding were examined for 10 months, starting 3 weeks after first-feeding stage. Four-thousand fish were divided into four replicated groups and random samples of 16–40 fish per group were measured six times during the experiment. The two strains showed no significant difference in mean body mass when fed restricted ration, but the individual variation was considerably higher in the farmed fish. Both Bleke and farmed S. salar grew significantly faster when fed to satiation, but the farmed S. salar showed much higher gain in mass and were three times heavier (201.5 g vs 66.7 g) and possessed twice as many fast muscle fibres (179,682 vs 84,779) compared with landlocked S. salar after 10 months. Farmed fish fed full ration displayed both hypertrophic and hyperplasic muscle growth, while the increased growth in Bleke S. salar was entirely associated with a larger fibre diameter. The landlocked Bleke strain has apparently adapted to low food availability by minimising the metabolic costs of maintenance and growth through reduced dominance hierarchies and by an increase in average muscle fibre diameter relative to the ancestral condition.  相似文献
