Microbial diversity and distribution are topics of intensive research. In two companion papers in this issue, we describe the results of the Cariaco Microbial Observatory (Caribbean Sea, Venezuela). The Basin contains the largest body of marine anoxic water, and presents an opportunity to study protistan communities across biogeochemical gradients. In the first paper, we survey 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequence diversity using both Sanger- and pyrosequencing-based approaches, employing multiple PCR primers, and state-of-the-art statistical analyses to estimate microbial richness missed by the survey. Sampling the Basin at three stations, in two seasons, and at four depths with distinct biogeochemical regimes, we obtained the largest, and arguably the least biased collection of over 6000 nearly full-length protistan rRNA gene sequences from a given oceanographic regime to date, and over 80 000 pyrosequencing tags. These represent all major and many minor protistan taxa, at frequencies globally similar between the two sequence collections. This large data set provided, via the recently developed parametric modeling, the first statistically sound prediction of the total size of protistan richness in a large and varied environment, such as the Cariaco Basin: over 36 000 species, defined as almost full-length 18S rRNA gene sequence clusters sharing over 99% sequence homology. This richness is a small fraction of the grand total of known protists (over 100 000–500 000 species), suggesting a degree of protistan endemism.  相似文献

Most analyses of food-sharing behavior invoke complex explanationssuch as indirect and delayed benefits for sharing via kin selectionand reciprocal altruism. However, food sharing can be a moregeneral phenomenon accounted for by more parsimonious, mutualisticexplanations. We propose a game theoretical model of a generalsharing situation in which food owners share because it is in their own self-interest—they avoid high costs associatedwith beggar harassment. When beggars harass, owners may benefitfrom sharing part of the food if their consumption rate islow relative to the rate of cost accrual. Our model predictsthat harassment can be a profitable strategy for beggars if they reap some direct benefits from harassing other than sharedfood (such as picking up scraps). Therefore, beggars may manipulatethe owner's fitness payoffs in such a way as to make sharingmutualistic.  相似文献

Erect helical colony forms have evolved at least six separate times within the Bryozoa, but only among those in which branches are composed of a single layer of feeding zooids. The four best known genera with helical colony forms evolved independently, and each occupied different benthic marine environments, achieved different growth habits, and utilized different aspects of an array of functional potentials resulting from the radially symmetrical colonies. Examination of the distribution of these four genera ( Archimedes , Bugula , Crisidmonea , and Retiflustra ) within a theoretical morphospace of hypothetical helical colony form reveals that each occupies its own characteristic region of morphospace, broadly overlapping in some dimensions but separated in others. The genera differ markedly in the branching densities within their filtration-sheet whorls, reflecting their phylogenetic legacies rather than constructional or functional constraints associated with helical growth. In contrast, all tend toward helices in which the radiating whorls of the unilaminate branches are held at an average of 50–60° to the central axis of the colony, and this may reflect a common functional optimum associated with the cilia-driven, auto-generated currents within the helix. The region of morphospace characterized by high values of surface area – i.e. helical geometries with branches orientated at very low angles to the central axis, and with very closely spaced whorls along the axis – is entirely empty of bryozoans, and these geometries apparently represent functionally unrealistic colony forms.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80 , 235–260.  相似文献

In this paper, the attainability of ESS of the evolutionary game among n players under the frequency-independent selection is studied by means of a mathematical model describing the dynamical development and a concept of stability (strongly determined stability). It is assumed that natural selection and small mutations cause the phenotype to change gradually in the direction of fitness increasing. It is shown that (1) the ESS solution is not always evolutionarily attainable in the evolutionary dynamics, (2) in the game where the interaction between two species is completely competitive, the Nash solution is always attainable, and (3) one of two species may attain the state of minimum fitness as a result of evolution. The attainability of ESS is also examined in two game models on the sex ratio of wasps and aphids in light of our criterion of the attainability of ESS.  相似文献

Summary A general model for the evolution of pathogen populations on mixtures or multilines is developed. This model is used to extend previous analyses of the effects of the widespread cultivation of multilines on the evolution of virulence in obligate parasites to mixtures of lines carrying different numbers of resistance genes. It is concluded that the composition of an equilibrium pathogen population growing on a multiline may vary within wide limits and the prinicipal determinant of its composition is the number of components in the multiline and the resistance genes they carry. Other factors of importance are (i) the relative contribution made by each host class (with different numbers of resistance genes) to the pathogen spore pool each generation; (ii) the levels of stabilizing selection against unnecessary virulence genes; and (iii) the way in which unnecessary genes for virulence combine to reduce pathogen fitness. Several investigators cite population control, frequent settlement relocation, trekking, expansion of diet breadth, and food taboos as strategic responses to game depletion by indigenous populations living in interfluvial zones of lowland South America. The Ka'apor Indians of the interfluvial forest of northern Maranhão, Brazil, employ other means of optimizing hunting efficiency, partly based on ritual. Menstruating women, pubescent girls, and parents of newborns can consume meat only of the tortoise (Gochelone denticulata), the first prey species to be hunted out of an area. Tortoise capture requires, on average, one full day of hunting. This means that the full potential of hunting pressure does not materialize near the settlement. Meat productivity is unusually high even near old settlements. I argue that ritual tortoise hunting helps to regulate environmental utilization, to maintain a sustained yield of meat protein, and to expand the catchment area gradually.  相似文献

Game theory models show that the evolution of interactions between relatives is determined by two kinds of fitness effects: Hamilton's inclusive fitness effect, and a frequency-dependent synergistic effect. The latter arises when an individual's behaviour has different effects on the fitness of interactants, depending on whether or not they perform the same behaviour. Knowing the sign of the synergistic effect is sufficient to understand most of the qualitative features of genetic models that show departures from Hamilton's rule. Since this synergistic effect does not depend on the interactants being related, it is best viewed as something distinct from kin selection. In this view, Hamilton's rule is basically correct for describing kin selection, and most deviations from it are due to the distinct process of synergistic selection.  相似文献

Summary Estimates of recombination frequency among enzyme loci of pitch pine revealed two new linkages, Mdh3:Pgm2 (=0.01) and Pep1:Mdh4 (=0.38), and confirmed two previously established linkages. Tighter linkage (=0.30) was ruled out for nearly all gene pairs examined.
