Lilioceris cheni is a successful biological control agent on the invasive yam, Dioscorea bulbifera in many areas in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana. Two biotypes are available for release and come from significantly different centres of origin. The Nepalese biotype was collected at higher altitude and latitude sites, whereas the Chinese biotype was collected at slightly lower latitude and lower altitude. We hypothesised that Nepalese beetles would survive winter better in north Florida and that Chinese beetles would overwinter better in subtropical south Florida. We established sites in Homestead, Fort Pierce, Gainesville and Tallahassee, Florida to gauge the overwintering survival of each biotype. Beetles that overwintered in each site for one to three seasons were collected and followed to assess their reproductive capacity. In the final year of the experiment, we extracted fat bodies to determine effects of biotype and site. Nepalese beetles overwintered significantly better overall. Beetles survived better in the first study year (2013–2014). Both biotypes reproduced very well after surviving winter and beetles in Fort Pierce survived better than beetles in other regions and maintained a higher fat body. Nepalese beetles may have a wider ecological envelope – a decided advantage for a large region such as peninsular Florida. We suggest that current release programmes incorporate Nepalese beetles into their protocol to increase overwinter survival and establishment.  相似文献

The host range of the tortoise beetle,Charidotis pygmaea Klug (Coleoptera:Chrysomelidae), was studied under quarantinelaboratory conditions to evaluate the insect'ssuitability for release as a biological controlagent for the noxious weed, Lantanacamara L. (Verbenaceae) in South Africa.Culturing on the target plant, L. camara,proved problematic with high larvalmortalities. Host-specificity studies showedthat four species in the genus Lantana,and two species in the genus Lippiawere acceptable as host plants. Duringlarval development trials, the insect performedbetter on the indigenous Lantana rugosaThunb. (Verbenaceae) and the introduced,commercially used L. montevidensis(Spreng.) Briq. (Verbenaceae), than on any ofthe weedy South African L. camaravarieties tested. Adult multi-choice trialsindicated that the beetle preferred to ovipositon L. rugosa and L. montevidensis.It is therefore recommended that C.pygmaea not be released against L.camara in Africa.  相似文献

Because of their effects on host reproductive behaviour, parasites are theoretically expected to create sometimes assortative mating among hosts, with heavily parasitized individuals pairing together and lightly parasitized ones pairing among themselves. We investigated the influence of protozoan gut parasites on the pairing pattern of the chrysomelid beetle Timarcha maritima. In the field, fecundity was negatively correlated with the parasite load of females, unpaired males were significantly more heavily infected than paired ones and, among pairs, males and females were matched for parasite load. Mate choice experiments in the laboratory showed that males have some ability to avoid heavily infected partners when given the choice between two females. Male competitiveness, measured as their mobility, was also negatively correlated with parasite load. These results indicate that parasite-related assortative pairing in this beetle could result from parasitized females being less fecund and parasitized males less competitive.  相似文献

Metal pollution is a major environmental danger owing to the rapid increase of urbanization and anthropogenic activities, which may damage the fauna and flora. Insects are often used as bioindicators of the accumulation of toxic elements. We measured concentrations of Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Al, and Pb in soil, litter and leaf beetles: Oulema gallaeciana (Heyden, 1879) and Lachnaia paradoxa (Olivier, 1808) at four sampling sites at different distances from metallurgical factory near Menzel Bourguiba (Tunisia). Metal concentrations did not extend beyond a distance of 4 km and were restricted to the immediate surroundings. Significant difference between sites was found for Cu, Fe, Al, and Mn concentrations in leaf litter and only for Pb in soil. In the case of Lachnaia paradoxa, no significant differences were found in the contaminant, except for Cu. The concentrations of Fe and Cu were high in Oulema gallaeciana. Positive correlations were detected for metals in the soil, leaf beetles and leaf litter. Our study confirms that the contaminants can transfer from plants to species.  相似文献
