The present study deals with the Cenomanian–early Turonian ostracods in the southern Sinai, Egypt. The investigated sequence includes the Raha and Abu Qada formations. The Raha Formation consists of distinctive Cenomanian taxa such as Cytherella aegyptiensis, Veeniacythereis maghrebensis, V. jezzineensis, V. streblolophata streblolophata, Monoceratina trituberculata, and Glenocythere reticulata. Based on the ostracod species, four local biozones are recognized, including Veeniacythereis jezzineensis – Metacythereopteron berbericum, Cytherella eosulcata – Xestoleberis derorimensis, Amphicytherura ziregensis and Perissocytheridea istriana – Cythereis fahrioni. The paleobiogeography of the considered ostracods suggests that there are two bioprovinces, the first of which is the North African province and includes Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria. The second bioprovince represents the Middle East province and includes Lebanon, Oman and Iran. The strong resemblance between the two bioprovince indicates a relatively good communication along the margin of Southern Tethys during the Cenomanian and improved marine ostracod exchange.  相似文献

Several transitions of Lower to Middle Turonian pelagic marl-limestone-cycles into Oceanic Red Beds were studied at high resolution to gain a better understanding of the Tethyan marine system before and during red bed initiation and development. Samples were analysed for mineralogy, geochemistry, and stable isotope composition. In particular, carbonate geochemistry of diagenetically largely unaltered calcite was used to explore palaeoceanographic changes in the western Tethys. Principal component analysis of carbonate chemical data showed that the development of red coloured pelagic sediments is accompanied by a shift towards highly oligotrophic conditions in the surface ocean as well as a decrease in hydrothermal activity. The formation of red beds is most likely associated with a shift towards more oxic conditions in basins with black shale deposits that eventually resulted in enrichment of thiophile elements in the entire basin. Depletion in nutrients (most likely phosphate) and red bed deposition followed the maximum flooding in the Early Turonian. Highly productive marsh areas from the proximal European shelf were reworked and supplied nutrients during transgression. A gradual nutrient depletion during sea level highstand might be the cause of significantly diminished nutrient availability. Carbonate production in this low latitude setting was influenced by orbital variation in insolation (20 ka cycle). Stable carbon isotope stratigraphy reveals low sedimentation rates (between 1 and 7 mm/kyr) and a duration of episodes of Cretaceous oceanic red bed deposition between 30 and 360 kyrs.  相似文献

In the “Eastern Pontides” (NE Turkey), the intense volcanic activity accompanying carbonate-siliceous sedimentation during the Late Cretaceous period ensured the occurrence of thick volcano-sedimentary sequences. Seventy-one radiolarian species belonging to 26 genera were identified from five stratigraphic sections of the Upper Cretaceous sequences between Trabzon and Giresun areas in NE Turkey. These species were obtained from the lower Turonian–lower Coniacian strata of the Çe?meler Formation, the Coniacian–lower Santonian strata of the Elmal? Dere Formation and the upper Santonian strata of the Ça?layan Formation. Coniacian–Campanian fauna, consisting of planktonic foraminifera Hedbergella, Marginotruncana, Globotruncana, Whiteinella and biserial heterohelicids as well as radiolarians, was recovered from the red pelagic limestones of the Elmal? Dere Formation known as marker horizon.  相似文献

Morphological variation in Turonian and Coniacian Micraster (Irregular Echinoids) from Picardy is analysed in samples from 4 beds stratigraphically superimposed in the chalk cliff and numbered C2, C3, C4 and C5. The statistical study is made of 23 characters (12 quantitative and 11 qualitative). In first part, uni- and multivariate analysises, complementedby observations of populations, have enabled us to recognize M. leskei (Des Moulins) in the two lower beds and M. decipiens (Bayle) in the upper ones. The growth of M. leskei is analysed in the second part. The biometrical study (bi- and multivariate analysises) of growth processes of the C2-bed urchins (which are small) and of the C3- bed urchins (which are sometimes much bigger) shows the homology of their ontogeny and confirms the name «large M. leskei given by R.B. Stokes for the C3 urchins. The genetic or ecological origin of that variation is discussed. In the third part, the analysis (multivariate) has enabled to understand the considerable variability of M. decipiens. This species contains several morphological types: trapezoidal or heart-shaped urchins, and conical- shaped urchins. The study shows that «gibbous forms are simple variants and that the two first forms may be considered as morphs of the same species. It is possible that these forms are separate species.  相似文献

In the southwestern part of Algeria, the Cenomanian-Turonian marine deposits build up a prominent ledge in a perched syncline (Ksour Mountains, western Saharan Atlas) or at high radius of curvature (Guir Basin). The petrographical analysis of the Cenomanian-Turonian deposits of the Ksour Mountains and of the Guir Basin reveals unexpected assemblages of roveacrinoidal ossicles comparable with those formerly reported from the Tinrhert area. For the first time, isolated ossicles of genuine and undisputable Roveacrinidae are illustrated. Three sections, Djebel Rhoundjaia (western Saharan Atlas), Berridel and Kénadsa (Guir Basin), were scrutinized to recognize the microcrinoidal sections within the carbonate microfacies and to compile the successive occurrence of respective roveacrinid taxa (besides the classical search for standard index microfossils) in an attempt to pinpoint more precisely the position of the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary (C/T B). These assemblages are particularly morphologically and taxonomically diverse with three species of genus Roveacrinus and one of genus Orthogonocrinus. The presence of Saccocomidae (Applinocrinus) is especially unusual in such stratigraphic levels. The relative abundance and diversity of Roveacrinidae evidence a peak when approaching the C/T B. Such an event is recurring in the latest Cenomanian in various Tethyan and Atlantic areas. These fluctuations are consistent with a high surface-water productivity just before the C/T B.  相似文献

Organic-walled dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) and geochemical records across the Cenomanian–Turonian boundary (CTB) are presented for the NW European reference section at Eastbourne, England. Dinocyst and nannofossil fertility indexes indicate that an upwelling-driven productivity pulse accompanied a eustatic sea-level fall that preceded, by at least 40 kyr, the global rise in δ13C values that marks the onset of Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE2) and the deposition of black shales in the deep ocean. A marine productivity collapse in the latest Cenomanian is evidenced by the falling absolute and relative abundance of peridinioid dinocysts, believed to be the product of heterotrophic dinoflagellates. This biotic change accompanied transgression and sharply rising sea-surface temperatures, following an Atlantic-wide episode of short-lived cooling. Geochemical tracers provide evidence of Caribbean–Colombian plateau volcanism. The increase in water depth caused by the latest Cenomanian transgression resulted in less eutrophic waters in epicontinental seas, where CTB biotic turnover was driven largely by water-mass changes rather than oxygen depletion. The species richness/absolute abundance ratio of dinocysts is proposed as a water-mass stability proxy.  相似文献

Cenomanian-Turonian ostracodes are reported from the western Colorado Plateau (Western Interior Basin) in the United States. Fifteen genera and twenty species are illustrated, six of which are new: Cytheromorphaperornata nov. sp., Looneyellaleckiei nov. sp., Asciocythereposterangulata nov. sp., Asciocytherearizonensis nov. sp., Cytheropteronclavifragilis nov. sp. and Hourcqiadakotaensis nov. sp. Three ostracode interval zones are proposed that broadly correspond to the existing late Cenomanian through to Middle Turonian Ammonite-zones of Kauffman et al. (1993). Paleoenvironments range from estuarine to coastal plain.  相似文献

Of all monocotyledons the Arecaceae displays by far the richest fossil record, and there is an extensive literature. The earliest unequivocal fossil palm material probably dates from the early to mid Late Cretaceous (Turonian > Coniacian > Santonian). The records are geographically widespread and comprise a wide range of organs: leaves, cuticles, stems, rhizomes, roots, fruits, seeds, endocarps, rachillae, peduncles, inflorescences, individual flowers and pollen. For some of these organs records are rare while for others, such as leaves, stems and pollen, records are abundant. However, fossil material often lacks sufficient diagnostic detail to allow reasonable association with living palm taxa beyond, or even to, subfamilial level. Nevertheless, many fossil genera and numerous species have been described. A brief survey of palm fossil records is presented, and their taxonomy and morphological limitations are considered. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 39–67.

More than one hundred centrodorsals of the comatulid crinoid Glenotremites paradoxus have been found in Turonian deposits (Upper Cretaceous) in the Miechów-Wolbrom area (southern Poland). This is the first dense occurrence of the genus Glenotremites in the Upper Cretaceous of Poland. Furthermore, so many individuals of this species in one level (the so-called Conulus Bed) forming a crinoid Konzentrat-Lagerstätte are very surprising because only disarticulated remains (cirrals and brachials) are encountered in the older (Cenomanian and earliest Turonian) and younger (late Turonian) deposits. The Glenotremites individuals are accompanied by isocrinids, which prove that stalked forms remained in shallow-water settings for some time after the initiation of the Mesozoic marine revolution.  相似文献
