Lipid metabolism in Tenebrio larval fat body has been studied in vitro. Lipid release required the presence of diluted hemolymph in the incubation medium. This time-dependent release of lipid was strongly stimulated in a dose-dependent manner by Tenebrio corpora cardiaca (CC) extracts or synthetic adipokinetic hormone (AKH I). Furthermore, some glycerol was released when larval fat body was incubated without hemolymph, and this phenomenon was also dose dependent for added CC extracts. Lipid synthesis was estimated in vitro by following the incorporation of radioactivity from [6-14C] glucose into fatty acids. Lipogenesis occurred in the absence of added carbohydrates in the medium, but it was stimulated by the addition of glucose, and especially trehalose (10 mg ml?1). Intestinal insulin-like peptide (ILP) also stimulated in vitro lipogenesis in a dose-dependent fashion. We conclude that lipolytic and lipogenetic activities of larval mealworm fat body in vitro are effectively under hormonal control.  相似文献

Summary By use of an antiserum against the crustacean cardioactive peptide (CCAP) several types of bilaterally symmetrical neurons have been mapped quantitatively in the ventral nerve cord and in the brain of the meal beetle, Tenebrio molitor. The general architecture of these neurons was reconstructed from peroxidase-antiperoxidase-labelled whole-mount preparations. From the subesophageal to the seventh abdominal ganglia two types of neurons show a repetitive organization of contralateral projection patterns in each neuromere. The first type has few branches in the central neuropil and a distinct peripheral projection. The second type is characterized by an elaborate central branching pattern, which includes ascending and descending processes. Some of its peripheral branches were found to supply peripheral neurohemal areas. In the protocerebrum, 10 CCAP-immunoreactive neurons occur with projections into the superior median protocerebrum and the tritocerebrum. Immunopositive neurons were mapped in larval and various pupal stages, as well as in the adult. All types of identified neurons were found to persist throughout metamorphosis maintaining their essential structural and topological characteristics. The CCAP-immunoreactive neurons of T. molitor are compared with those described for the locust. Putative structural homologies of subsets of neurons in both species are discussed.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 Males operate within a finite energy budget and cannot produce limitless supplies of sperm. On the other hand, when a female mates with a second male while still containing fertile sperm from a rival male, selection should favour the male that inseminates more sperm. Optimal strategy should thus be for males to exercise discretion in the allocation of sperm to individual females. Assuming the outcome of sperm competition to be based on either the raffle or kamikaze principles, the sperm competition hypothesis predicts a positive association between the probability that the sperm will find themselves in competition with sperm from rival males and the number of sperm inseminated.
  • 2 The beetle, Tenebrio molitor L., behaves in accordance with this hypothesis. Males accompanied by a rival male before and during mating inseminate more sperm per ejaculate than unaccompanied males. Accompanied males are also faster to initiate mating and more likely to show post-copulatory guarding. Adjustment of number of sperm inseminated was shown by males subjected to both long-term (5 days) and short-term (5 min) exposure to potential intrasexual competitors. Individual males exposed to both levels also demonstrated the ability to adjust their ejaculate according to socio-sexual situation.

The site specificity of the apicomplexans Gregarina cuneata and Gregarina sleini , in larval Tenebrio molitor was investigated. Gregarina cuneata was found to inhabit the anteriormost region of the larval midgut, while G. steini was restricted to the posterior portion of the intestine. The site specificity of the pair was conserved in single and concurrent infections. Interspecific interactions do not seem to be presently responsible for the resource partitioning by the 2 gregarine species. Key words. Gregarina, site specificity, Tenebrio molitor.  相似文献

黄粉虫是多种小型经济动物的常用优良饵料,本试验在20.1℃,24.0℃、28.5℃、31.7℃和36.5五种恒温下饲养该成虫结果,成虫寿命平均分别为63.0、54.2、38.8、38.0和26.1天;每雌平均产卵量则分别为200.3、207.3、122.3、115.8和81.2粒,成虫平均生产1g卵消耗麸皮量分别为2.66、2.00、2.19、2.14和4.15g。结果说明人工繁殖黄粉虫的成虫期温度以24℃为最适宜。  相似文献

It is proposed that the activity of an epidermal cotransport system for Na+ and dicarboxylic amino acids accounts for the small amounts of L-glutamate and L-aspartate in the otherwise amino-acid-rich blood plasma of insects. This Na+-dependent transport system is responsible for more than 95% of the uptake of these amino acids into the larval epidermis of the beetle Tenebrio molitor. Kinetic analysis of uptake showed that the Na+-dependent co-transporter has medium affinity for L-glutamate and L-aspartate. The K m for L-glutamate uptake was 146 mol·l-1, and the maximum velocity of uptake (V max) was 12.1 pmol·mm-2 of epidermal sheet per minute. The corresponding values for L-aspartate were 191 mol·l-1 and 8.4 pmol·mm-2·min-1. The Na+/L-glutamate co-transporter has a stoichiometry of at least two Na+ ions for each L-glutamate-ion transported (n=217). The co-transporter has an affinity for Na+ equivalent to a K m of 21 mmol · l-1 Na+. Na+ is the only external ion apparently required to drive L-glutamate uptake. Li+ substitutes weakly for Na+. Removal of external K+ or addition of ouabain decreases uptake slowly over 1 h, suggesting that these treatments dissipate the Na+/K+ gradient by inhibiting epidermal Na+/K+ ATPase. Several structural analogues of L-glutamate inhibit the medium-affinity uptake of L-glutamate. The order of potency with which these competitive inhibitors block glutamate uptake is L-cysteatethreo-3-hydroxy-Dl-aspartate > D-aspartateL-aspartate> L-cysteine sulphinate > L-homocysteateD-glutamate. L-trans-Pyrrolidine-2,4-dicarboxylate, a potent inhibitor of L-glutamate uptake in mammalian synaptosomes, is a relatively weak blocker of epidermal uptake. The epidermis takes up substantially more L-glutamate by this Na+-dependent system than tissues such as skeletal muscle and ventral nerve cord. The epidermis may be a main site regulating blood L-glutamate levels in insects with high blood [Na+]. The development of the Neotropical predatory pentatomid Brontocoris tabidus on an artificial diet based on beef meat and liver was evaluated. The predator showed significantly longer nymphal development and lower adult weights on this diet than when reared on pupae of the mealworm Tenebrio molitor. The survival of nymphs fed exclusively on the artificial diet was somewhat lower compared with feeding on T. molitor pupae. When B. tabidus was bred on this artificial diet during part of its nymphal period i.e. during the second; second and third; and second, third and fourth instars , and was subsequently returned to T. molitor pupae, the predator nymphs completed the nymphal stage with a developmental rate similar to that of nymphs fed on live prey throughout. The adults attained after switching from the artificial diet to live prey from the third and fourth instar onwards had similar weights to those in the control. Considering the relatively good results obtained with B. tabidus and other members of the pentatomid subfamily Asopinae, this meat-based diet may be a valuable alternative for use in the mass production of predatory pentatomids.  相似文献

Summary

Two neuropeptides (NPs), hydra head activator (HHA), and the luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH), were used to study their effects on the development of the larvae of the grain beetle Tenebrio molitor (mealworms). The larvae received the NPs in the course of development at the beginning or at the end of instar. The LHRH given at the beginning of the instar stimulated molting and pupation in larvae; it did not affect molting in the late period of the instar. The C-end fragment of LHRH(9–10) produced fewer molts and increased the duration of the instar period. The effect of this fragment was weak when it was injected at the initial period of the instar; it was considerably stronger in the end of the instar. It inhibited development when administered during the last instar. On the contrary, the N-end fragment of the LHRH(1–2) stimulated growth and development of larvae. The action of these NPs can be connected to the function of the hormones of metamorphosis. The HHA administrated to the larvae at different days of the instar stimulated molting but in the last instar it delayed pupation. The C-end of the HHA(7–11) stimulated molting when injected during the whole period of the instar. The other C-end fragments, the HHA(8–11) and HHA(9–11) had inhibitory effects on the molting. The injection of the N-end fragment of the HHA(1–5) had no effect. The action of HHA and its fragments did not correlate with the function of the hormones of metamorphosis.  相似文献
