Geographical gradients of persistence in community structure have been suggested to be causally related to underlying gradients of species diversity, environmental variability and/or productivity. In order to test whether the persistence of breeding duck communities was dependent on any one of these three factors, thirty-three years of census data from the Canadian prairie and boreal forest regions was examined along geographical gradients of wetland habitat variability and productivity. For breeding ducks, locally derived patterns of persistence were generally independent of local habitat conditions. Persistence appeared to be related more to patterns of emigration and immigration in response to climatic conditions (i.e., drought) in the southern prairies than to local species richness, wetland habitat variability or productivity. It is suggested, therefore, that analyses of community persistence derived at small spatial scales may be of limited value if the structure of communities is not regulated by local conditions.  相似文献

Summary Four experimental formulations ofBacillus sphaericus Neide (2362 isolate) were evaluated for larvicidal activity against culicine and anopheline larvae in several natural and artificial habitats. A granular formulation (5% primary powder) was tested against natural populations of mosquitoes in two simulated habitats in Florida and in maturing and reflooded rice fields in Louisiana. Larvae ofCulex quinquefasciatus Say were reduced by 97 and 99% after application of the granules at the rate of 10 kg/ha to polluted tanks and 2.5 kg/ha to sod-lined potholes, respectively. Anopheline andPsorophora columbiae (Dyar and Knab) larvae were reduced by 68 and 92–100%, respectively, after application of 5 kg granules/ha to rice fields. A flowable concentrate (12.8% primary powder) applied to unpolluted and organically enriched habitats in Florida at 0.25 kg/ha reduced populations ofCulex spp. by 93–100% and 99%, respectively. Sustained-release briquets (5% primary powder) applied at the rate of one half briquet/1.8 m2 sod-lined potholes reduced larval populations ofCx. quinquefasciatus by 88–95% for up to 2 weeks in open sunlight. Sustained-release pellets (30% primary powder) applied to small woodland pools in Memphis, TN at the rate of four pellets/pool virtually eliminated larval populations ofCx. restuans Theobald for over 8 days. Variable persistance of larvicidal activity was noted for the other treatments depending on the formulation, target species and habitat.  相似文献

Plant community structure in an oligohaline tidal marsh   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
An oligohaline tidal marsh on the northern shore of Lake Pontchartrain, LA was characterized with respect to the distributions and abundances of plant species over spatial and temporal gradients using Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA). In addition, the species distributions were correlated to several physical environmental factors using Detrended Canonical Correspondence Analysis (DCCA). The distributions of species were best correlated with distance from Lake Pontchartrain, and to a lesser extent with elevation and substrate organic matter. They were least correlated with mean soil salinity (referred to here as background salinity). Of the three mid-seasonal dominant species, the perennial grass, Spartina patens, is the most salt tolerant and was found closest to the lake. Further inland the dominant perennial was Sagittaria lancifolia, which has a salt tolerance less than that of Spartina patens. The perennial sedge, Cladium jamaicense, which is the least salt tolerant of the three, was dominant furthest inland. Background salinity levels were generally low (<5 ppt.) and did not explain species distributions. We hypothesize that the distribution of species is regulated by occasional storm-generated salt pulses that generate strong, short-lived salinity gradients as a function of distance from the lake. Biotic interactions likely also play a role in structuring the plant community. The distributions of several annuals depended on the size and life history of the mid-seasonal dominant perennials. Most of the annuals frequently co-occurred with Sagittaria lancifolia, which was the shortest in stature and had the least persistent canopy of the three mid-seasonal dominant perennials.Abbreviations DCA Detrended Correspondence Analysis - DCCA Detrended Canonical Correspondence Analysis  相似文献

The effect of simulated rain at two intensities (26.7 or 112.7 mm h-1) and durations (30 or 60 min) on the persistence of Beauveria bassiana conidia applied in water on leaves of alfalfa leaves of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) or wheat (Triticum aestivum) was investigated. Initial populations of conidia on the leaves of both crops were similar, and ranged from 1.7 105 to 3.5 105 colony-forming units cm-2. The simulated rain reduced the concentration of conidia on leaves by 28-61%. Although there was a slight effect due to rain intensity for alfalfa, there was no influence of either rain duration or crop type on the retention of B. bassiana conidia.  相似文献

Summary Laboratory prescreening ofRhizobium trifolii for acid tolerance, based upon the ability of rhizobia to grow in acid media (pH 4.2) containing Al (15 M), was successful for the selection of strains capable of survival in acid soil.Both sterile and non-sterile soils of varying acidity were inoculated with several strains ofR. trifolii.Acid tolerant strains generally had significantly higher populations at every sample period than an acid sensitive strain. Amelioration of soil acidity by liming improved persistence of all strains. Spirogyra insignis shows a long-term persistence of cell division synchrony in the absence of the synchronizing Zeitgeber, so that at least six generations are involved in the process. This tentatively suggests that a mechanism of transmission throughout generations of synchronizing information could maintain this synchrony. Apparently, a vital part of the molecular basis of this mechanism is a membrane proteoglycan complex. This complex could obtain temporal information from a synchronizing Zeitgeber and be transmitted to the progeny by distribution of plasma membrane between daughter cells.  相似文献

Summary Five different soils varying in physico-chemical properties were used for studying the persistence and degradation of carboxin and oxycarboxin. In one soil only both fungicides were degraded with accumulation of ammonium and nitrite. Under the conditions of forced circulation of air and continuous perfusion, oxycarboxin was found to be more susceptible to degradation than carboxin. Under simulated conditions of rice fields, conversion of carboxin to its sulphoxide and to a non-toxic derivative of oxycarboxin could only be seen in all the soils.The role of clay, humus and organic matter as protectants of fungicides against degradation indicated that the intermediary compound carboxin sulphoxide was strongly adsorbed probably on organic and inorganic colloids of most of the soils. Organic matter free soils delayed the degradation. Summary The time derivatives of prey and predator populations are assumed to satisfy a set of inequalities, instead of a precise differential equation, reflecting an uncertain environmental and/or lack of knowledge by the modeler. A system of differential equations is found whose solution gives the boundary of a persistent set, which is positive flow invariant for any system satisfying the inequalities. Conditions are given for the persistent set to be bounded away from both axes, which show that resonance effects cannot drive either predator or prey to extinction if that does not happen for an autonomous system satisfying the inequalities. In general predator-prey systems are more persistent when there is strong asymptotic stability, when there is correlation between prey and predator dynamics, when the effect of perturbations is density dependent, and are more persistent under perturbations of the prey than of the predator.  相似文献

A three-component model consisting on one-prey and two-predator populations is considered with a Holling type II response function incorporating a constant proportion of prey refuge. We also consider the competition among predators for their food (prey) and shelter. The essential mathematical features of the model have been analyzed thoroughly in terms of stability and bifurcations arising in some selected situations. Threshold values for some parameters indicating the feasibility and stability conditions of some equilibria are determined. The range of significant parameters under which the system admits different types of bifurcations is investigated.
