Individual phenotypic differences are increasingly recognized as key drivers of ecological processes. However, studies examining the relative importance of these differences in comparison with environmental factors or how individual phenotype interacts across different environmental contexts remain lacking. We performed two field experiments to assess the concurrent roles of personality differences and habitat quality in mediating individual mortality and dispersal. We quantified the predator avoidance response of mud crabs, Panopeus herbstii, collected from low‐ and high‐quality oyster reefs and measured crab loss in a caging experiment. We simultaneously measured the distance crabs traveled as well as the stability of personalities across reef quality in a separate reciprocal transplant experiment. Habitat quality was the primary determinant of crab loss, although the distance crabs traveled was governed by personality which interacted with habitat quality to control the fate of crabs. Here, crabs on low‐quality reefs rapidly emigrated, starting with the boldest individuals, and experienced modest levels of predation regardless of personality. In contrast, both bold and shy crabs would remain on high‐quality reefs for months where bolder individuals experienced higher predation risk. These findings suggest that personalities could produce vastly different population dynamics across habitat quality and govern community responses to habitat degradation.  相似文献

Coastal, benthic invertebrates with complex life history strategies are exposed to stage- and habitat-specific selective forces. In the coastal environment, benthic adults are exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants (PAHs) due to their proximity to human activities (shipping, urbanization, and industrialization). Benthic invertebrates produce lipid-rich eggs or larvae that absorb PAHs from polluted estuaries and coastal waters. The larvae of many coastal invertebrates move offshore following release from benthic adults. During development in offshore waters, larvae of some species are exposed to relatively high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Marine organisms vary in their tolerance to PAHs and UV radiation. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the sequential exposure of the larvae of marine crabs to PAHs and UV radiation.Using laboratory experiments, the larvae of four crab species were exposed to PAHs and UV radiation. There was a significant synergistic effect of exposure to PAH (fluoranthene or pyrene) and UV radiation on larvae of the spider crab (Libinia dubia), the stone crab (Menippe adina) and the mud crab (Panopeus herbstii). Larvae of blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) were exposed to PAHs and UV radiation in both laboratory and solar UV experiments. Significantly higher mortality occurred for C. sapidus larvae using either type of UV-artificial or solar.Larvae of coastal invertebrates with complex life history strategies are susceptible to the combined effects of PAHs and UV radiation. In this study, the exposure of crab larvae to PAHs and UV radiation resulted in mortality to crab larvae using laboratory and solar UV experiments. There were no effects on larval crab mortality due to PAH or UV radiation independently but mortality was as high as 100% when both factors were present.  相似文献

Phytoremediation of contaminated calcareous desert land in the United Arab Emirates has been investigated. Soils from 12 northern UAE sites, suspected of metal contamination, were acid-extracted and analyzed by ICP-OES for Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Twenty-two plants naturally growing at contaminated sites were sampled and analyzed for their uptake of Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn and eight commercially available plants, grown under controlled conditions, were also studied for their phytoextraction capabilities. The concentration of available Cr was found to be 1300 ± 150 mg/kg in the soil of the Ajman Industrial Zone and 80 ± 10 mg/kg of Pb was found at Bithna. Among the plants investigated, Portulaca oleracea and Iresine herbstii showed potential for Cr(VI) and Pb(II) accumulation, respectively, with bioconcentration factors (BCF) greater than unity. Variation in habitat quality is common across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine habitats. We investigated how habitat quality influenced the reproductive potential of mud crabs across 30 oyster reefs that were degraded to different extents. We further coupled this field survey with a laboratory experiment designed to mechanistically determine the relationship between resource consumption and reproductive performance. We show a >10‐fold difference in average reproductive potential for crabs across reefs of different quality. Calculated consumption rates for crabs in each reef, based on a type II functional response, suggest that differences in reproductive performance may be attributed to resource limitation in poor quality reefs. This conclusion is supported by results of our laboratory experiment where crabs fed a higher quality diet of abundant animal tissue had greater reproductive performance. Our results demonstrate that spatial variation in habitat quality can be a considerable contributor to within‐population individual variation in reproductive success (i.e., demographic heterogeneity). This finding has important implications for assessing population extinction risk.  相似文献

Anthropogenic elevation of atmospheric CO2 is driving global-scale ocean acidification, which consequently influences calcification rates of many marine invertebrates and potentially alters their susceptibility to predation. Ocean acidification may also impair an organism''s ability to process environmental and biological cues. These counteracting impacts make it challenging to predict how acidification will alter species interactions and community structure. To examine effects of acidification on consumptive and behavioural interactions between mud crabs (Panopeus herbstii) and oysters (Crassostrea virginica), oysters were reared with and without caged crabs for 71 days at three pCO2 levels. During subsequent predation trials, acidification reduced prey consumption, handling time and duration of unsuccessful predation attempt. These negative effects of ocean acidification on crab foraging behaviour more than offset any benefit to crabs resulting from a reduction in the net rate of oyster calcification. These findings reveal that efforts to evaluate how acidification will alter marine food webs should include quantifying impacts on both calcification rates and animal behaviour.  相似文献

Coexistence among species is commonly related to niche divergence. However, congenerics usually are very similar in their microhabitat selection and food consumption. Thus, divergent life history strategies may represent the mechanism that allows sympatry in related species. Here, we describe and compare reproductive features in two sympatric mud crabs Panopeus americanus and P. occidentalis in an impacted mangrove area in Southern Brazil. As these species are ecologically similar, we hypothesize that these species diverge in their reproductive traits, which could explain their coexistence. Crabs were collected every two months from September 2004 to July 2006. Reproductive features such as number and size of ovigerous females, breeding season, fecundity, reproductive output, and embryo volume were assessed. Panopeus americanus produced embryos during the entire sampled period, while P. occidentalis produced only between September and March. Panopeus americanus produced more embryos considering the size of the species, had significantly lower embryo volume, and higher reproductive output than P. occidentalis. These data permit to classify P. americanus as an r-strategist and P. occidentalis as a K-strategist regarding their reproductive traits. In conclusion, our results support the hypothesis that divergent reproductive features may allow coexistence of these mud crabs.  相似文献

Repeated injections of crude aqueous extracts of roots of the sacculinid, Loxothylacus panopei, were performed in two xanthid species: Rhithropanopeus harrisii, the rhizocephalan's usual crab host, and Panopeus herbstii, a nonparasitized crab in North Carolina waters but which is frequently infected by the same parasite along southern Atlantic coasts. Testes, androgenic glands, and the different parts of the central nervous system were observed histologically. The rhizocephalan extracts induced alterations of the testicular germinative zone for both crab species; mesodermal cells and gonia degenerate. The sinus glands of the central nervous system appear devoid of secretions. The comparison of the sensitivity of the two species with respect to the parasite shows that, at the level of the genital apparatus, the modifications are more severe in P. herbstii. Hypotheses concerning the noninfestation of P. herbstii in brackish waters of North Carolina are proposed following a brief survey of the physiological and ecological characteristics of both species.  相似文献
