Zooplankton of the family Bosminidae have a unique paleolimnological record in many Holarctic lakes that provides a near continuous record of morphological change for thousands of years. If this morphological change could be interpreted reliably, then a rarely achieved direct observation of macroevolution would be feasible. We tested paleolimnological predictions derived from morphological variation found in the genus Eubosmina using mtDNA and nuclear DNA sequence variation from geographically distant Holarctic sites. The mtDNA and nDNA trees were congruent but genetic divergence was inversely associated with morphological divergence. The three most genetically divergent groups belonged to Eubosmina longispina, whose phylogeography and genetic divergence was consistent with glacial vicariance. The genetic evidence also supported the hypothesis that at least two Nearctic species were recent European introductions. Finally, the genetic evidence was consistent with paleolimnology in the finding of several proposed species undergoing rapid morphological evolution and being post-glacially derived from European E. longispina. The results suggested that lacustrine bosminids are susceptible to geographic speciation processes, and that morphological interpretation of diversity in paleolimnology can be markedly improved by genetic studies.  相似文献

In shallow temperate lakes, zooplankton populations may exhibit diel horizontal migration (DHM) and move towards macrophytes during the day to avoid fish. Using a natural Daphnia magna population, we undertook an experimental investigation aimed to describe the genetic variation for DHM and to study whether an adaptive micro-evolutionary response occurred to changes in macrophyte coverage and fish predation pressure through time. Twenty-seven D. magna clones were hatched from ephippia in the sediment of shallow Lake Ring, Denmark. This lake was eutrophied during the 20th century and was subject to restoration measures in the 1970s. The DHM behaviour of the clones was observed both in the presence and absence of fish kairomone. Significant interclonal variation in DHM behaviour occurred in both treatments. To study the micro-evolutionary response of the Lake Ring D. magna population, two approaches were used. First, we compared the DHM behaviour of clones derived from ephippia collected at different depths. A comparison was conducted between clones resurrected from the period of eutrophication (1960–1980) and from the period of recovery (1986–2000). A significant treatment (presence and absence of fish kairomone) × period interaction effect was identified, suggesting a significant micro-evolutionary response for DHM behaviour. The D. magna clones exhibited a significantly stronger horizontal migration response during the period of eutrophication than in the recovery phase. Second, clonal means, representing the influence of the genotype on the trait, were correlated with environmental conditions (macrophyte cover, fish predation pressure and Secchi depth). The results of this analysis also suggest that a micro-evolutionary response by Daphnia has occurred in reaction to changes in fish predation pressure. In periods with high fish predation pressure, Daphnia migrated more strongly towards the plants. A 9.14 m long sediment sequence was recovered from Lake Fryxell, Taylor Valley, southern Victoria Land, Antarctica, and investigated for its chronology and sedimentological, mineralogical, and biogeochemical changes. The basal part of the sequence is dominated by coarse clastic matter, i.e., mainly sand. The sediment composition suggests that a lake existed in Fryxell basin during the Middle Weichselian by ca. 48,000 cal. year BP. After a short period of lake-level lowstand ca. 43,000 cal. year BP, lower Taylor Valley became occupied by the proglacial Lake Washburn, which was at least partly supplied by meltwater and sediments from the Ross Ice Sheet that was advanced to the mouth of Taylor Valley. Evaporation of Lake Washburn to lower levels started during the Last Glacial Maximum at ca. 22,000 cal. year BP, long before the Ross Ice Sheet retreated significantly. Lake-level lowering was discontinuous with a series of high and low stands. From ca. 4000 cal. year BP environmental conditions were similar to those of today and lower Fryxell basin was occupied by a small lake. This lake evaporated to a saline or hypersaline pond between ca. 2500 and 1000 cal. year BP and refilled subsequently.  相似文献

The Quincy Diatomite, central Washington, USA, is a middle Miocene (∼ 15 Ma) lacustrine deposit located between flows of the Columbia River Basalt Group. Two primary localities along the western margin of the deposit are examined for stratigraphic and geographic variation. Three lithologic units are recognized in the deposit and are distinguished by distinct diatom floras and subtle lithologic differences. Diatom assemblages vary geographically along the western margin of the basin. Distinctions between these assemblages are confirmed through analysis of point count data using nonMetric Multidimensional Scaling and cluster analyses. Three stages of lake development, directly influenced by the regional geology and geography, are recognized. The earliest stage was likely deposited in a series of small-interconnected pocket lakes that were eutrophic and slightly alkaline. This lake stage was succeeded by a period of shallower water depth, and dominated by benthic species. The latest stage of the lake is interpreted as representing a deepening and expansion of the lake, based on the dominance of planktonic diatom species. Tectonic uplift of the western Frenchman Hills Anticline combined with overall subsidence of the Quincy Basin during intermediate and late stages of lake development is interpreted to be the driver for relative changes in lake bathymetry.  相似文献

We investigated stratigraphic changes in fossil pigments and the molecular structure of the UV-absorbing fraction of pore-water dissolved organic matter in a sedimentary record from Lake Peipsi (Estonia/Russia) temporally covering the 20th century. The aims of the study were to define the onset of eutrophication in the lake and to track its course. An attempt was also made to reconstruct lake conditions before the intensive nutrient loading began. Fossil pigment analysis indicated that the eutrophication of the lake started in the 1960s and accelerated in the 1970s. Sedimentary pigments also indicate a continuing tendency of the lake ecosystem towards eutrophy in the 1980s and 1990s. However, changes in the molecular size structure of pore-water dissolved organic matter indicated that the contribution of autochthonous matter to the organic pool of the lake ecosystem had already started to increase around the end of the 1930s. We conclude that this rise was generated by a coincidence of several anthropogenic and natural factors. The pore-water data also show that a slight relative reduction in the autochthonous organic matter took place in the 1990s. A discordance in the paleodata obtained for the beginning of the 20th century complicates clear conclusions about earlier conditions in the lake. On the one hand, the qualitative characteristics of pore-water dissolved organic matter and the low concentration of chlorophyll a indicate that the phytoplankton biomass was low in Lake Peipsi during that period. On the other hand, the concentrations of marker pigments of specific phytoplankton groups are high, comparable with the values in the recent sediments. Possible reasons for the high levels of these pigments in the early 1900s sediments, such as a shift in the preservation conditions of organic substances and their transport from the lake’s catchment, are discussed.  相似文献

Fossil cladoceran remains preserved in surface sediment samples from 44 oligotrophic lakes in south-central Ontario were examined to evaluate the relationships between species assemblages and measured environmental variables. Differences in cladoceran assemblages were related to physical and chemical variables using multivariate techniques. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) identified five environmental variables as significantly influencing assemblage composition: sulphate (SO42−), calcium (Ca2+), pH, maximum lake depth (Z max) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). There was a distinct separation of lakes and taxa along the ion gradient based on SO4, Ca and pH. Additionally, cladoceran communities in coloured, shallow lakes had relatively higher abundances of littoral chydorid species and the pelagic taxa Holopedium spp., and the Daphnia pulex complex. Deep, clear lakes had relatively higher abundances of other pelagic taxa. Predation by fish (measured as presence–absence) and Chaoborus (measured as density) were less significant than some of the physico-chemical variables in influencing cladoceran assemblage structure. However, this could be due to the limited resolution of the predation data that was available at the time of this study. The distribution of cladocerans in the surface sediment, and their relation to these important environmental variables, suggests that there is considerable potential for the use of sedimentary cladoceran remains as environmental indicators in south-central Ontario lakes. Comparison of sediment cores collected in 1999 and 2013 from shallow Lake Harris, Florida, USA showed that the sediment maintained stratigraphic integrity despite multiple hurricanes passing through the area in 2004. Sediments less than 50 years old displayed small losses of organic matter (OM), total phosphorus (TP) and heat-extractable (HE-P) through time that are unrelated to hurricane impacts. Nevertheless, sediment that accumulated between the two core collection dates contained 4-fold more TP than was lost from the sediment over the 14-year period, indicating that sediments in Lake Harris are a net sink for water-column TP. Persistent, elevated 137Cs activity in sediments deposited since the mid-1960s indicates protracted cesium input to the lake from this subtropical watershed. There is also evidence for downward transport of 137Cs in the sediment profile between core collection dates. Prolonged export of 137Cs from the watershed and downward mobility of the radionuclide in the sediment profile diminish the utility of 137Cs as a dating tool in Lake Harris.  相似文献

In contrast to other lakes studied in Cape Breton Highlands National Park (Nova Scotia, Canada), our paleolimnological results indicated that Glasgow Lake has been impacted by acidic deposition starting in the early 1900s. Based on analysis of diatom assemblages, the lake experienced a decrease in diatom-inferred lakewater pH from a pre-industrial pH of ~5.8 to a current pH of 5.3 (2000–2002 measured mean pH = 5.0) as well as a decrease in diatom-inferred Gran-alkalinity. In this study, diatom-based paleolimnological techniques were used in conjunction with a dynamic biogeochemical model (MAGIC) to assess both the timing and extent of the acidification trend, as well as determine a probable explanation as to why this lake, and none of the other 15 Cape Breton Highlands lakes studied for paleolimnology thus far, acidified under a peak non-marine sulphate deposition load of 43.6 mmolc m−2 year−1 in the mid-1970s. Steady-state models estimate that Glasgow Lake had the lowest buffering capacity of six study lakes and estimated critical sulphate loading of <1 mmolc m−2 year−1. MAGIC also estimated a loss of charge balance alkalinity from a pre-1850 value of 38 μmolc l−1 to a low of 12 μmolc l−1. While no evidence of biological recovery has been recorded, MAGIC estimates an increase in charge balance alkalinity to 27 μmolc l−1 in 2002 in response to decreased SO2 emissions. Of the five other lakes that were modelled, all showed trends towards more acidic states and subsequent increases in charge balance alkalinity; however, the empirical paleo-diatom approach applied to these lakes showed no evidence of acidification. Thus, Glasgow Lake has the lowest buffering capacity among the Cape Breton Highland study lakes and serves as a sentinel of potential acidification trends and recovery in this region.
