The life histories of oysters in the genus Crassostrea, like those of most marine bivalves, are typified by high fecundity and low survival in nature. Rearing conditions in hatcheries however ensure optimized density, diet, and temperature. Hatcheries are becoming increasingly important for the production of juveniles in aquaculture, and their culture practices often include culling of slow growing larvae to reduce and synchronize the time taken to reach settlement. Because previous studies have found substantial genetic variation for early life developmental traits in Crassostrea gigas, these culling practices are likely to cause highly different selective pressures in hatcheries from those in the natural environment. We studied the phenotypic and genetic impact of such culling practices in a factorial cross between 10 males and 3 females subjected to progressive culling of the smallest 50% of larvae, compared with a non-culled control. Measurements were made on larval growth, survival, time taken to attain pediveliger stage and settlement success. Culling had a larger effect on the variance of these larval traits than on their means. The larvae in culled cultures were approximately 10% larger than those in controls, whereas the coefficient of variation was reduced by 30-40%. Culling also reduced the mean time to settlement by 12% and its variance by 55%. Using a multiplexed set of microsatellite markers to trace parentage, we also estimated the variance in reproductive success in a controlled experiment to quantify the consequences of intensive hatchery rearing practices. We also focused on changes in effective population size and genetic structure over time (and developmental stages). Our results show a loss of genetic diversity following removal of the smallest larvae by culling, as well as temporally varying genetic structure of the larval population. This supports the existence of genetic variability in early life developmental traits in C. gigas. Culling in hatcheries, like size-related selective pressures in the wild, are likely to have a significant genetic impact, through their effects on the timing of settlement.  相似文献

The calcitic columnar prisms of pteriomorphian bivalves have the crystallographic c-axis oriented perpendicular to the shell surface and the a-axes rotated without any preferential orientation. In oysters, SEM, XRD and EBSD analyses show that individual prisms initially have their a-axes randomly oriented but are able to progressively orient them parallel to those of their neighbors. This ability is apparently confined to groups, such as oysters and scallops, in which prisms are internally constituted by smaller lath-like crystal units. We have developed a competition model – not between prisms, but between the lath-like secondary units of prisms – which is based on differences in the inclination of laths relative to the shell growth surface. Units having a growth component which coincides with the growth direction protrude faster from the growth surface and out-compete those which are not favorably oriented, which reduces the overall dispersion of the a-axes of the prismatic lamella. The extent of re-alignment increases with the relative inclination of the growth surface and the length attained by the prisms. Oysters are the only group in which these two characters are pronounced enough to provide a measurable re-alignment. The proposed competition model is unprecedented in biomaterials and reveals how important crystal growth processes are in microstructure organization.  相似文献

Two bivalve species Crassostrea gigas and Ruditapes philippinarum were fed eight weeks with three mono-specific algae diets: T-Isochrysis galbana, Tetraselmis suecica, Chaetoceros calcitrans, selected on the basis of their polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition. The incorporation and the modification of dietary fatty acids in C. gigas and R. philippinarum gill lipids were analysed and compared. Essential PUFA (20:4n-6, 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3) and non-methylene interrupted PUFAs (known to be synthesised from monounsaturated precursors) contents of gill polar lipid of both species were greatly influenced by the dietary conditioning. Interestingly, oysters and clams responded differentially to the mono-specific diets. Oysters maintained higher 20:5n-3 level and higher 22:2j/22:i and n-7/n-9 ratio in gill polar lipids than clams. To better discriminate dietary and species influences on the fatty acid composition, a Principal Component Analysis followed by a MANOVA on the two most explicative components was performed. These statistical analyses showed that difference in fatty acid compositions attributable to species were just as significant as the diet inputs. The differences of gill fatty acid compositions between oysters and clams are speculated to result of an intrinsic species characteristic and perhaps of a group characteristic: Fillibranch vs. Eulamellibranch.  相似文献

The characterization of three bacterial strains isolated from cultured oysters and seawater at the Spanish Mediterranean coast has been performed. Strains were phenotypically and genetically characterized and the results led us to identify them as members of the genus Marinomonas. A phylogenetic analysis based on the almost complete 16S rDNA sequences clustered all three strains together (with sequence similarities around 99.8%) in the vicinity of M. communis and M. vaga sequences and distantly related to the other four species of the genus. The most closely related species was M. communis that shared 97.4-97.6% with the Mediterranean strains. DNA-DNA hybridizations were performed to clarify the taxonomic position of our isolates and the results confirmed their specific isolation, with interspecific binding ratios below 59%. We propose the bacteria to constitute a new Marinomonas species, i.e. M. aquamarina and strain 11SM4T (CECT 5080T, CIP 108405T, CCUG 49439T) as the type strain.  相似文献

The cosmopolitan dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum is a recurrent bloom forming species in the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, generally observed at its highest levels in late spring and summer. Laboratory studies were conducted to assess potential bloom impacts on diel oxygen concentrations in shallow littoral zones as well as settlement success and post-set growth of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica. Using light–dark and dark cultures and periodic diel sub-sampling, bloom levels of P. minimum produced supersaturated oxygen levels at the end of each day while darkened cultures were typified by rapid decreases in dissolved oxygen (DO) (1.1–1.3 mg L−1 h−1) to hypoxic and anoxic levels within 4 days. These data suggest shallow, poorly flushed systems and the biota in them will experience rapid and large diel variations in oxygen, implying recurrent P. minimum blooms need be considered as short-term oxygen stressors for Bay oyster spat and other living resources. Direct effects of P. minimum impacts on oysters were not as expected or previously reported. In one experiment, pre-bloom isolates of P. minimum were grown and then exposed to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) settlement plates to see whether dinoflagellate preconditioning of the hard substrate might affect oyster sets. No differences were noted between set on the PVC with P. minimum exposure to set recorded with filtered seawater, Instant Ocean®, or Isochrysis. In the second oyster experiment, spat on PVC plates were exposed to field collected P. minimum blooms and a commercial mixture of several other food types including Isochrysis. Oyster growth was significantly higher in P. minimum exposures than noted in the commercial mix. These results, compared to results with other isolates from the same region, indicate substantial positive impact from some of the P. minimum blooms of the area while others separated in space, time, or nutrient status could severely curtail oyster success through toxin production induced by nutrient limitation.  相似文献

Three reproductive strategies of Ostrea puelchana from the San Matias Gulf (Rio Negro, Argentina) are described and discussed. These relate to the degree of grouping shown by the oysters; i.e., (a) Carriage (this strategie is unique to the Ostreidae); (b) clusters and (c) isolation. Incidence of these strategies differed among three study sites (Banco Reparo, Las Grutas and Bajo Oliveira). Carriage incidence was maximal at Bajo Oliveira (69.4 % of the individuals), intermediate at Banco Reparo (49.7 %), and minimal at Las Grutas (19.7%), where clusters and isolated individuals predominate. Clusters constituted only a small fraction at Bajo Oliveira (1.1 %) and Banco Reparo (3.5%). The percentage of males larger than 50 mm was notedly lower at Banco Reparo (8.0 %) than at Las Grutas (39.3 %). The Las Grutas oysters associated in clusters have a higher percentage of males (57.9%) than at other locations and in any other type of association.Sex ratio and the particular dominant reproductive strategy are characteristic of each area, indicating a balance between the different strategies to improve fertilization efficiency.  相似文献

In oysters Crassostrea gigas translocated from a metal-enriched estuary (Gironde, France) to a comparatively clean site, the Bay of Bourgneuf (France), Cd, Cu and Zn concentrations were determined monthly in the whole soft tissues, or in different fractions (cytosolic or insoluble) of gills and digestive glands. In all cases, the concentrations of all of the three metals decreased logarithmically and half-lives were always shortest for Cd (86-251 days). After 4 months, the Cd concentration had become not significantly different from the threshold considered safe for human consumption (1 mg kg(-1) wet wt.). In the digestive gland, half-lives were similar in cytosolic and insoluble fractions. In contrast, in the gills, elimination patterns differed markedly between these fractions. The long half-lives calculated for divalent metals in the insoluble fraction of the gills (1505 and 3010 days for Zn and Cu, respectively) is possibly due to a fossilization of metals in intracellular membrane-bound inclusions as shown previously in Ostrea edulis. It is interesting to underline that elimination is fastest for cytosolic metals compared to the insoluble fraction.  相似文献

Three bacterial strains isolated from oysters recovered at the Spanish Mediterranean coast have been phenotypically and genetically characterized. The results of the phylogenetic analysis based on almost complete 16S rDNA sequences clustered all three strains together with 99.9% average sequence similarity and situated them in the neighbourhood of the genera Stappia, Roseibium and Pannonibacter, Stappia aggregata being their closest neighbour with sequence similarities between 98.8% and 98.9%. DNA-DNA hybridization experiments using DNA of strains 5OM6T and S. aggregata CECT 4269T as reference DNAs confirmed the independent status at species level of the oyster isolates. Phenotypically, they can be distinguished from the closest relatives by the ionic requirements, growth temperatures and use of carbon compounds. We propose these oyster strains constitute a new species of Stappia, for which the name Stappia alba sp. nov. has been chosen, and strain 5OM6T (= CECT 5095T = CIP 108402T) as its type strain.  相似文献
