The teleomorph of Candida kunwiensis Hong, Bae, Herzberg, Titze, Lachance, Metschnikowia kunwiensis, is described. Repeated attempts to obtain ascospore formation succeeded using modified V8 sporulation media and extended incubation times. The asci are ovoid, with only a small protrusion caused by the spore(s). The species is diplontic, possibly homothallic, with one or two ascospores per ascus. Aside from having atypical ovoid asci, the acicular shape of the spores is characteristic of the genus Metschnikowia. The type strain is CBS 9676(T).  相似文献

Traditionally, the termination of parasite epidemics has been attributed to ecological causes: namely, the depletion of susceptible hosts as a result of mortality or acquired immunity. Here, we suggest that epidemics can also end because of rapid host evolution. Focusing on a particular host–parasite system, Daphnia dentifera and its parasite Metschnikowia bicuspidata , we show that Daphnia from lakes with recent epidemics were more resistant to infection and had less variance in susceptibility than Daphnia from lakes without recent epidemics. However, our studies revealed little evidence for genetic variation in infectivity or virulence in Metschnikowia . Incorporating the observed genetic variation in host susceptibility into an epidemiological model parameterized for this system reveals that rapid evolution can explain the termination of epidemics on time scales matching what occurs in lake populations. Thus, not only does our study provide rare evidence for parasite-mediated selection in natural populations, it also suggests that rapid evolution has important effects on short-term host–parasite dynamics.  相似文献

Species interactions may profoundly influence disease outbreaks. However, disease ecology has only begun to integrate interactions between hosts and their food resources (foraging ecology) despite that hosts often encounter their parasites while feeding. A zooplankton–fungal system illustrated this central connection between foraging and transmission. Using experiments that varied food density for Daphnia hosts, density of fungal spores and body size of Daphnia , we produced mechanistic yet general models for disease transmission rate based on broadly applicable components of feeding biology. Best performing models could explain why prevalence of infection declined at high food density and rose sharply as host size increased (a pattern echoed in nature). In comparison, the classic mass-action model for transmission performed quite poorly. These foraging-based models should broadly apply to systems in which hosts encounter parasites while eating, and they will catalyse future integration of the roles of Daphnia as grazer and host.  相似文献

Climate change and variation in atmospheric ozone are influencing the intensity of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) reaching ecosystems. Changing UVR regimes, in turn, may alter epidemics of infectious disease. This possibility hinges on the sensitivity of epidemiologically relevant traits of host and parasite to UVR. We address this issue using a planktonic system (a zooplankton host, Daphnia dentifera, and its virulent fungal parasite, Metschnikowia bicuspidata). Controlled laboratory experiments, coupled with in situ field incubations of spores, revealed that quite low levels of UVR (as well as longer wavelength light) sharply reduced the infectivity of fungal spores but did not affect host susceptibility to infection. The parasite's sensitivity to solar radiation may underlie patterns in a lake survey: higher penetration of solar radiation into lakes correlated with smaller epidemics that started later in autumn (as incident sunlight declined). Thus, solar radiation, by diminishing infectivity of the parasite, may potently reduce disease.  相似文献

The yeast Metschnikowia fructicola was tested as a preharvest treatment to control preharvest and postharvest rots of strawberry fruit in Turkey and Israel. In greenhouse trials, the efficacy of the yeast antagonist against preharvest rots was equal to that of a chemical control (fenhexamid) in two growing seasons. In an open-field experiment, the yeast reduced the incidence of rot to commercially acceptable levels. M. fructicola reduced the incidence of fruit rot by 56-69% in greenhouses, open-field culture, and in low plastic tunnels. The yeast suppressed postharvest incidence of fruit rot significantly better than fenhexamid. Among fruit from greenhouses, open-field culture, or tunnels, M. fructicola treatment reduced the incidence of fruit rot during postharvest storage by 70, 64, and 72%, respectively. When applied weekly in the greenhouse or in the field, the population density of M. fructicola was about 1×105 cfu/fruit. Similar population density of the antagonist was also observed during storage of the fruit at 0° C.  相似文献

This work deals with biogenic amine production by yeast strains isolated from grapes and wines. A total of 50 strains were tested for their capacity to produce biogenic amines in wine. In general, all the species produced very low or non-detectable amounts of histamine, whereas methylamine and agmatine were formed by all the species considered. The highest concentration of total biogenic amines was formed by Brettanomyces bruxellensis, with an average value of 15 mg/l, followed by Saccharomyces cerevisiae with an average of 12.14 mg/l. The other species formed less than 10 mg of total biogenic amines per litre. Wines fermented with the most fermentative strains of S. cerevisiae species had the highest contents of ethanolamine, from 2.3 to 16 mg/l, and of agmatine, from 3.1 to 7.5 mg/l. The strains of the other species, which exhibited a low fermentative ability, Kloeckera apiculata, B. bruxellensis and Metschnikowia pulcherrima, varied in the production of agmatine and phenylethylamine. A significant variability in the production of cadaverine was characteristic of Candida stellata strains, which varied also in ethanolamine production. Our results emphasize the importance of using selected strains of S. cerevisiae, not only for the expression of desirable technological traits, but also to avoid potentially negative effects on human health. Therefore, the characterization of strains of S. cerevisiae for the 'production of biogenic amines' becomes of applicative interest.  相似文献

Our overall objectives were to prepare commercially acceptable formulations of the postharvest biological control yeasts, Metschnikowia pulcherrima and Pichia guilliermondii, which have a long storage life and to determine the effectiveness of these formulations to control postharvest green and blue moulds on citrus fruit. Yeasts, grown on a cane molasses-based medium, were combined with talc or kaolin carriers and various adjuvants and the viability of yeast in 12 formulations was determined over a 6 month period. Formulation no. 11, containing talc, sodium alginate, sucrose, and yeast extract, for both yeasts had a significantly higher viable yeast cell content over a 6 month storage period. Among the formulations, three formulations (formulations no. 5, 6, and 11) were selected for additional in vivo testing because they had higher levels of viability amongst yeast cell populations during storage and were easier to resuspend remained in suspension more easily. These formulations were tested on Satsuma mandarin and grapefruit to control green and blue moulds. Formulations no. 5, 6, and 11 for both yeasts effectively controlled green mould, while only formulation no. 11 with either yeast isolate M. pulcherrima (isolate M1/1) or P. guilliermondii (isolate P1/3) effectively controlled both blue and green moulds.  相似文献

Epidemiologists increasingly realize that species interactions (e.g. selective predation) can determine when epidemics start and end. We hypothesize here that resource quality can also strongly influence disease dynamics: epidemics can be inhibited when resource quality for hosts is too poor and too good. In three lakes, resource quality for the zooplankton host ( Daphnia dentifera ) was poor when fungal epidemics ( Metschnikowia bicuspidata ) commenced and increased as epidemics waned. Experiments using variation in algal food showed that resource quality had conflicting effects on underlying epidemiology: high-quality food induced large production of infective propagules (spores) and high birth rate but also reduced transmission. A model then illustrated how these underlying correlations can inhibit the start of epidemics (when spore production/birth rate are too low) but also catalyse their end (when transmission becomes too low). This resource quality mechanism is likely to interface with other ones controlling disease dynamics and warrants closer evaluation.  相似文献

Two new haplontic heterothallic species of Metschnikowia were discovered in flowers and associated beetles. Metschnikowia arizonensis was recovered from flowers of cholla cactus (Opuntia echinocarpa) and a specimen of Carpophilus sp. (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) found in these flowers, in Arizona. Metschnikowia dekortorum was isolated in specimens of the nitidulid beetle Conotelus sp. captured in flowers of two species of Ipomoea in northwestern Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. The sexual cycle of these yeasts is typical of the large-spored Metschnikowia species, but the asci and spores are intermediate in size between these and other members of the genus. The physiology is consistent with that of most Metschnikowia species except that both species fail to utilize lysine as sole nitrogen source. Also, M. arizonensis utilizes fewer carbon compounds than most species and exhibits considerable variability among strains at this level. Partial ribosomal DNA large-subunit (D1/D2) sequences suggest that M. arizonensis and M. dekortorum are moderately related sister species whose positions are intermediate between the large-spored species Metschnikowia and Metschnikowia hibisci. The type cultures are: M. arizonensis, strains UWO(PS)99-103.3.1=CBS 9064=NRRL Y-27427 (h(+), holotype) and UWO(PS)99-103.4=CBS 9065=NRRL Y-27428 (h(-), isotype); and M. dekortorum, strains UWO(PS)01-142b3=CBS 9063=NRRL Y-27429 (h(+), holotype) and UWO(PS)01-138a3=CBS 9062=NRRL Y-27430 (h(-), isotype).  相似文献
