In the present work, we described the fate of proventitious epicormic buds on the trunks of 40-year-old Quercus petraea trees and in parallel the vascular trace they produced in the wood. Our results show that small and large individual epicormic buds can survive as buds for 40 years and that both are composed of a terminal meristem and scales. Meristematic areas are detected in the scale axils of small buds; in addition to these meristems the large buds also have secondary bud primordia. The small buds are connected to the pith of the main stem by a unique trace, whereas the large buds are connected by one or multiple traces. A single trace might imply that the whole bud is still alive and multiple traces might indicate that the terminal meristem has died. In the latter case, each trace is connected to a secondary bud of the large bud. The buds found in a cluster are composed of a terminal meristem and scales with axillary meristems in the scale axils. A cluster is connected to the pith of a stem either by a unique trace when it seems to be the result of partial abscission of an epicormic shoot or multiple traces when it might have originated from an epicormic bud in which the terminal meristem has died. Whatever the type of the bud, the vascular trace in the bark is composed of a cambium, secondary xylem and parenchyma cells and the trace present in the wood had parenchyma cells with vestiges of secondary xylem. Each year, the vascular trace should be produced in the bark by the cambium of the tree but not by the bud itself. On 40-year-old Q. petraea, we observed a proliferation of epicormic buds and in parallel a multiplication of the number of vascular traces in the trunk, but the knots caused by the traces of epicormic buds in the wood, either as individuals or in clusters, are minor since their colours are only slightly darker than those of woody rays and they are less than 2 mm in diameter. Abstract. The availability of maj or plant resources was investigated in three vegetation types that were assumed to represent different stages of a secondary succession on heathland on the Lüneburger Heide, northwestern Germany. Canopy transmission and absorption of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), soil-water availability, and nutrient (Ca, K, Mg, N, P) availability were monitored with high spatial and temporal resolution in (1) a Calluna vulgaris heathland, (2) a pioneer birch-pine forest and (3) a late-successional oak-beech forest, situated close to each other on comparable geological substrate (diluvial). Mean fractional transmission of PAR during summer decreased from 0.48 in the heathland to 0.04 in the oak-beech forest while the fractional canopy absorption increased from 0.49 to 0.92. Soil-water availability as indicated by the soil-water potential, was significantly influenced by differential canopy interception loss and characteristic rooting patterns in the three vegetation types. Annual mean nutrient concentrations in the equilibrium soil solution were similar or, for some elements, increased from the heathland to the birch-pine and the oak-beech forest despite a growing demand. A marked increase was found for the total nutrient pools in the soil-organic layer between early and late successional vegetation types. On the poor glacial parent material, nutrient pools seem to be strongly dependent on stand productivity and litter production which increased with succession. Thus, for nutrients, facilitation seems to be important in this type of succession.  相似文献

Summary

Irish oakwoods are sparsely distributed and generally small in extent. The woodland flora is depauperate compared to Great Britain in terms of flowering plants but quite rich in Oceanic ferns, bryophytes and lichens. It includes a few distinctive species, e.g. the Mediterranean-Atlantic Arbutus unedo. Remnants of ancient woodland survive at scattered locations; they usually contain old coppice stools, or occasionally pollards. Variation in the woodland plant community reflects an edaphic gradient from strongly acid to base-rich, a hydrological gradient from well-drained to waterlogged and a climatic gradient in degree of Oceanicity. The greatest conservation problems facing Irish oak-woods are overgrazing and invasive alien species, chiefly Rhododendron ponticum; to tackle these effectively, greater public concern is required.  相似文献

Model-based projections of shifts in tree species range due to climate change are becoming an important decision support tool for forest management. However, poorly evaluated sources of uncertainty require more scrutiny before relying heavily on models for decision-making. We evaluated uncertainty arising from differences in model formulations of tree response to climate change based on a rigorous intercomparison of projections of tree distributions in France. We compared eight models ranging from niche-based to process-based models. On average, models project large range contractions of temperate tree species in lowlands due to climate change. There was substantial disagreement between models for temperate broadleaf deciduous tree species, but differences in the capacity of models to account for rising CO(2) impacts explained much of the disagreement. There was good quantitative agreement among models concerning the range contractions for Scots pine. For the dominant Mediterranean tree species, Holm oak, all models foresee substantial range expansion.  相似文献

Aim In this study, we evaluate the importance of the mean earlywood vessel size of oaks as a potential proxy for climate in mesic areas. Location The study was conducted in Switzerland at three forest sites dominated by oak (Quercus petraea and Q. pubescens). The three sites were in different climatic zones, varying mainly in terms of precipitation regime. Methods Three 50‐year‐long site chronologies of mean earlywood vessel size and tree‐ring widths were obtained at each site and related to monthly meteorological records in order to identify the main variables controlling growth. The responses of mean vessel size to climate were compared with those of the width variables to evaluate the potential climatic information recorded by the earlywood vessels. Results The results show that the mean vessel size has a different and stronger response to climate than ring‐width variables, although its common signal and year‐to‐year variability are lower. This response is better in particular at mesic sites, where it is linked to precipitation during spring, i.e. at the time of vessel formation, and is probably related to the occurrence of only a few processes controlling vessel growth, whereas radial increment is controlled by multiple and varying factors. Main conclusions The mean earlywood vessel size of oak appears to be a promising proxy for future climate reconstructions of mesic sites, where radial growth is not controlled by a single limiting factor.  相似文献

Reconstructing the colonization and demographic dynamics that gave rise to extant forests is essential to forecasts of forest responses to environmental changes. Classical approaches to map how population of trees changed through space and time largely rely on pollen distribution patterns, with only a limited number of studies exploiting DNA molecules preserved in wooden tree archaeological and subfossil remains. Here, we advance such analyses by applying high‐throughput (HTS) DNA sequencing to wood archaeological and subfossil material for the first time, using a comprehensive sample of 167 European white oak waterlogged remains spanning a large temporal (from 550 to 9,800 years) and geographical range across Europe. The successful characterization of the endogenous DNA and exogenous microbial DNA of 140 (~83%) samples helped the identification of environmental conditions favouring long‐term DNA preservation in wood remains, and started to unveil the first trends in the DNA decay process in wood material. Additionally, the maternally inherited chloroplast haplotypes of 21 samples from three periods of forest human‐induced use (Neolithic, Bronze Age and Middle Ages) were found to be consistent with those of modern populations growing in the same geographic areas. Our work paves the way for further studies aiming at using ancient DNA preserved in wood to reconstruct the micro‐evolutionary response of trees to climate change and human forest management.  相似文献

Little information exists about the establishment of native longleaf pine flatwoods species for use in restoration efforts and as buffers around natural areas in the southeastern United States. Composition of groundcover in these systems is dominated by perennial graminoid species. Vegetation in current buffers is generally non‐native turfgrass that can escape into natural areas, often reducing establishment and survival of native species. Where management objectives involve actively restoring native groundcover or reducing the probability of invasion by these non‐native turfgrasses, identification of native species and restoration methods is needed. We investigated seed germination and establishment of four species native to longleaf pine flatwoods in central Florida and one species native to the adjacent wetland communities. Paspalum setaceum, Panicum anceps, Eustachys petraea, and Eragrostis refracta were directly seeded, and P. distichum was planted as sprigs into three former P. notatum pastures. Irrigation, fertilization, weed control, and mowing treatments were assessed in terms of cover development of the sown species. Paspalum distichum developed the highest percent cover—over 80% in wet areas after 1 year. Mowing had mixed impacts depending on the species, and fertilization never significantly increased cover. Directly seeded species developed sparse cover (0–40%), probably as a result of drought conditions. However, E. petraea and E. refracta appeared more promising for use on rights‐of‐way when using high sowing rates. A second experiment conducted on a roadside included these two species and sprigged P. distichum. Both E. petraea and P. distichum developed more than 45% cover on the roadside. Establishment of these natives from seed or sprigs was significantly enhanced when site preparation effectively reduced the seedbank of other species present in the soil.  相似文献
