The benthic cyanobacterium Fischerella muscicola (Thur.) Gom. UTEX 1829 produces a secondary metabolite, fischerellin, that strongly inhibits other cyanobacteria and to a lesser extent members of the Chlorophyceae. Eubacteria are not affected. The major active compound is lipophilic and exhibits a molecular ion at m/z 408. It is heat- and acid-stable but decomposes in 1 M sodium hydroxide (80° C. 1 h). Fischerellin inhibits the photosynthetic but not the respiratory electron transport of cyanobacteria and chlorophytes. Its site of action is located in PS II. Two other species of Fischerella also produce fischerellin, indicating that the synthesis of such allelochemicals might be characteristic of the genus.  相似文献

Summary The bioconversion of hydrocortisone by a locally isolated strain of cyanobacterium Fischerella ambigua PTCC 1635 was investigated. Fischerella ambigua had not been previously examined for this potential. The fermentation led to production of 11β,17α, 20β, 21-tetrahydroxypregn-4-en-3-one and 11β-hydroxyandrost-4-en-3,17-dione. The metabolites were isolated and purified by chromatographic methods and identified using instrumental analyses.  相似文献

Four species of bluegreen algae were tested for possible effect on the protozoan Paramecium caudatum Ehrenberg. Toxicity was demonstrated using lyophilized cells of Fischerella epiphytica Ghose and Gloeotrichia echinulata (Smith) Richter. Nostoc linckia (Roth) Bornet & Thuret failed to show any effects when lyophilized but became toxic when sonified. Anabaena flos-aquae (Lyngb.) Bréb. was nontoxic in all tests. G. echinulata was lethal at 0.1 mg·ml?1 which is comparable to the toxic concentration of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (L.) Ralfs reported for microcrustaceans.  相似文献

Abstract

Epilithic species of heterocystous cyanobacteria were isolated from Roman hypogea, grown at low photon flux densities and morphologically characterized. Determination of photosynthesis versus irradiance curves and nitrogen fixation activities on three of these strains, showed that their photosynthetic efficiency was low but sufficient to sustain nitrogen fixation.  相似文献

We evaluated allelopathic interactions between strains of Cyanobacteria and green algae isolated from south and central Florida. Allelopathy, including inhibition or stimulation of growth, was assessed by cocultivation of each of the isolated strains, as well as by evaluation of extracts prepared from the isolates. All of the strains of Cyanobacteria, and four of the six isolates of green algae, showed some allelopathic activity (i.e. inhibition or stimulation of the growth of other strains). Of these, the most pronounced activity was observed for the cyanobacterial isolate Fischerella sp. strain 52-1. In the cocultivation experiments this cyanobacterium inhibited the growth of all tested green algae and Cyanobacteria. The crude lipophilic extracts from Fischerella sp. strain 52-1 isolated from both the biomass and the culture liquid inhibited photosynthesis of the green alga Chlamydomonas sp. in a concentration- and time-dependent manner and caused extensive loss of ultrastructural cell organization. Preliminary chemical characterization of compounds extracted from Fischerella sp. strain 52-1 indicated the presence of indole alkaloids, and further characterization has confirmed that these compounds belong to the hapalindoles previously isolated from other species of Fischerella and related genera. Further chemical characterization of these compounds, and further investigation of their apparent role in allelopathy is ongoing.  相似文献

A novel nutrient removal/waste heat utilization process was simulated using semicontinuous cultures of the thermophilic cyanobacterium Fischerella. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC)-enriched cultures, maintained with 10 mg l−1 daily productivity, diurnally varying temperature (from 55°C to 26–28°C), a 12:12 light cycle (200 μE sec−1 m−2) and 50% biomass recycling into heated effluent at the beginning of each light period, removed > 95% of NO3 + NO2−N, 71% of NH3-N, 82% of PO43− −P, and 70% of total P from effluent water samples containing approximately 400 μg l−1 combined N and 60 μg l−1 P. Nutrient removal was not severely impaired by an altered temperature gradient, doubled light intensity, or DIC limitation. Recycling 75% of the biomass at the end of each light period resulted in unimpaired NO3 + NO2 removal, 38–45% P removal and no net NH3 removal. Diurnally varying P removal, averaging 50–60%, and nearly constant > 80% N removal, are therefore projected for a full-scale process with continuous biomass recycling.  相似文献

Chromophore assignment in phycoerythrocyanin from Mastigocladus laminosus   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The component spectra (maxima of absorption, circular and linear dichroism) of individual chromophores have been assigned for phycoerythrocyanin (PEC) trimer, monomer(s), and its subunits (-PEC and -PEC) by titration with p-chloromercury-benzene-sulfonate (PCMS), linear dichroism and photochemical transformations, as well as by deconvolution using a bilin line-shape spectrum based on the -84 phycoviolobilin-chromophore in the -subunit. The level ordering PVB--84 PCB--155 PCB--84 is the same irrespective of aggregation. Two different monomers () were observed. In 4 M urea, the spectra are appropriately weighted sums of the subunit spectra, whereas in the monomer obtained in 1 M KSCN, both -chromophores are red-shifted by 4–5 nm. Formation of trimer ()_3gives considerable spectral changes: (1) the absorption is narrowed, which has been rationalized by excitonic coupling between neighbouring monomers, (2) the short wavelength part in the CD spectrum is missing and (3) a fourth band (+) at 528 in the LD spectrum appears. A deconvolution of the trimeric aggregation state using only the bilin line-shape model is not possible.  相似文献

Ultraviolet (UV) sensitivity and photoreactivation of blue-green algae Cylindrospermum sp., Plectonema boryanum, spores of Fischerella muscicola and algal virus (cyanophage) LPP-1 were studied. The survival value after UV irradiation of filaments of Cylindrospermum sp. and Virus LPP-1 showed exponential trend and these were comparatively sensitive towards UV than F. muscicola and P. boryanum. Photoreactivation of UV-induced damage occurred in black, blue, green, yellow, red and white light in Cylindrospermum sp., however only black, blue and white light were capable of photorepair of UV-induced damage in P. boryanum, spores of F. muscicola and virus LPP-1 in infected host alga. Pre-exposure to yellow and black light did not show photoprotection. The non-heterocystous and nitrogen fixation-less mutants of Cylindrospermum sp. were not induced by UV and their spontaneous mutation frequency was not affected after photoreactivation. The short trichome mutants of P.boryanum were more resistant towards UV.The occurrence of photoreactivation of UV-induced killing in wide range of light in Cylindrospermum sp. is the first report in organisms.  相似文献
