Pathogens are a significant component of all plant communities. In recent years, the potential for existing and emerging pathogens of agricultural crops to cause increased yield losses as a consequence of changing climatic patterns has raised considerable concern. In contrast, the response of naturally occurring, endemic pathogens to a warming climate has received little attention. Here, we report on the impact of a signature variable of global climate change – increasing temperature – on the long‐term epidemiology of a natural host–pathogen association involving the rust pathogen Triphragmium ulmariae and its host plant Filipendula ulmaria. In a host–pathogen metapopulation involving approximately 230 host populations growing on an archipelago of islands in the Gulf of Bothnia we assessed changes in host population size and pathogen epidemiological measures over a 25‐year period. We show how the incidence of disease and its severity declines over that period and most importantly demonstrate a positive association between a long‐term trend of increasing extinction rates in individual pathogen populations of the metapopulation and increasing temperature. Our results are highly suggestive that changing climatic patterns, particularly mean monthly growing season (April‐November) temperature, are markedly influencing the epidemiology of plant disease in this host–pathogen association. Given the important role plant pathogens have in shaping the structure of communities, changes in the epidemiology of pathogens have potentially far‐reaching impacts on ecological and evolutionary processes. For these reasons, it is essential to increase understanding of pathogen epidemiology, its response to warming, and to invoke these responses in forecasts for the future.  相似文献

Pollen grains from 15 species (18 taxa) of the genus Filipendula were examined with light and scan-ning electron microscopy. It was revealed that the pollen grains are isopolar, tricolporate, with scabrate or scabrate-microechinate surface. The pollen morphology was compared with the conventional classification sys-tems of the genus by different authors, and supported Shimizu's system (1961), in which the genus was divided into three subgenera. The monotypic subgen. Hypogyna is characterized by pollen lacking fastigium and thickened costae colpi. The other monotypic subgen. Filipendula differs from others by pollen having larger grain, larger pore size, longitudinally elliptic fastigium and thickened costae colpi. The largest subgen. Ulmaria is distinguished by pollen having rounded or latitudinally elliptic fastigium and thickened costae colpi. Sectional classification was not supported by the pollen morphology due to insufficient variability.  相似文献

Summary Two sites at Örup, SE skåne, Sweden, have been investigated, viz. a grazed, unimproved, tussocky pasture on a calcareous moraine clay; and an originally similar, adjacent area that was abandoned about 1960. On the grazed site the vegetation is extremely rich in species. This vegetation type was formerly widespread, but nowadays it is rare and therefore it is important to try to conserve examples of it. In total, 80 0.1 m2 quadrates distributed at random within 4 homogeneous plots were investigated. The species composition and the cover, the height of the vegetation, the position on a tussock or in a depression and the amount of litter were recorded. The cover data were ordinated (PCA). The differentiation between tussocks and depressions and the effects of ceasing grazing were clearly separated. The connections between the vegetation and the position of the quadrat, grazing intensity etc. were investigated. The vegetation of the ungrazed parts had become dominated by Filipendula ulmaria and Carex disticha; on an average there were 5.5 species/0.1 m2. The grazed quadrats contained three times as many species and showed much higher spatial variation, important species being Carex panicea, C. flacca, Molinia caerulea, Festuca ovina, Potentilla erecta, Centaurea jacea and Serratula tinctoria.Nomenclature of vascular plants follows Lid (1974), for names of bryophytes see Nyholm (1954–69) and Arnell (1956).This paper is mainly based on a more detailed paper in Swedish (Regnéll 1979).I thank Dr. E. van der Maarel, Prof. Nils Malmer, Fil. lic. We investigated host race formation in Galerucella tenella, a leaf beetle which feeds preferentially on meadowsweet (Rosaceae) in its natural habitats, but has become an important pest on strawberry (Rosaceae) in agricultural areas. Beetles from two isolated sites (Skeppsvik in Sweden and Solf in Finland) were compared with respect to preference and performance. At Skeppsvik the beetles were found feeding on meadowsweet, while at Solf large populations only develop in strawberry plantations, despite the presence of meadowsweet. In reciprocal field transplantations and laboratory bioassays, beetles from both sites discriminated against their foreign host, using their natal plant to a significantly higher degree for both egg laying and feeding, but with one interesting exception, namely that beetles from Solf increased their use of and even preferred meadowsweet for feeding in the laboratory. This increased use of meadowsweet by adult Solf beetles in the laboratory (without conspecific competitors) may be attributed to a density-dependent strategy, whereby mothers avoid pre-emptying the nutritional resources of the plants that will host their offspring in cases where no competitors are present.Larval fitness did not differ significantly between host plants, although larval survival of Solf beetles was halved when reared on their non-natal host plant (meadowsweet). Although beetles from both sites preferred to oviposit on their local host plant, our results provide little evidence that this presumed adaptation has to do with the nutritional quality of the plants involved. Instead, we suggest that other factors associated with the plants, such as enemy-free space and resistance to drought may be more important selective agents, shaping host preference in the field.  相似文献

Odors of pollen and whole flowers were compared in taxonomically unrelated species that offer pollen as the only food reward to pollinators. Volatiles were collected using headspace adsorption and analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. The odor of pollen was found to be chemically distinct from the total flower odor, and this pollen-odor distinctness varied among the three species. In Papaver rhoeas (Papaveraceae), the contrast between pollen and whole-flower odors was most subtle, with differences observed only in the proportions of individual volatiles (almost exclusively aliphatic hydrocarbons). In Filipendula vulgaris (Rosaceae), pollen volatiles were fewer than in the flowers (comprising mainly benzenoids and fatty-acid derivatives) and their relative proportions produced an odor dominated by 2-heptadecanone that contrasted strikingly with the flower odor dominated by 2-phenyl ethanol. In Lupinus polyphyllus (Fabaceae), the pollen odor contained fewer volatiles and in differing proportions than the flower fragrance (comprising almost exclusively isoprenoids). The findings add to earlier chemical evidence of odor contrasts between pollen and other flower parts in two other species. Drawing on information from pollination studies of these various species, it is suggested that pollen odor is used by pollen-foraging insects both to discriminate between plant species and to assess reward availability in individual flowers, and that it might in addition serve a protective function against destructive flower-feeding insects and pathogens.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce the coevolution-by-coexistence hypothesis which predicts that the strength of a coevolutionary adaptation will become increasingly apparent as long as the corresponding selection from an interacting counterpart continues. Hence, evolutionary interactions between plants and their herbivores can be studied by comparing discrete plant populations with known history of herbivore colonization. We studied populations of the host plant, Filipendula ulmaria (meadow sweet), on six islands, in a Bothnian archipelago subject to isostatic rebound, that represent a spatio-temporal gradient of coexistence with its two major herbivores, the specialist leaf beetles Galerucella tenella and Altica engstroemi. Regression analyses showed that a number of traits important for insect-plant interactions (leaf concentrations of individual phenolics and condensed tannins, plant height, G. tenella adult feeding and oviposition) were significantly correlated with island age. First, leaf concentrations of condensed tannins and individual phenolics were positively correlated with island age, suggesting that plant resistance increased after herbivore colonization and continued to increase in parallel to increasing time of past coexistence, while plant height showed a reverse negative correlation. Second, a multi-choice experiment with G. tenella showed that both oviposition and leaf consumption of the host plants were negatively correlated with island age. Third, larvae performed poorly on well-defended, older host populations and well on less-defended, younger populations. Thus, no parameter assessed in this study falsifies the coevolution-by-coexistence hypothesis. We conclude that spatio-temporal gradients present in rising archipelagos offer unique opportunities to address evolutionary interactions, but care has to be taken as abiotic (and other biotic) factors may interact in a complicated way.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at and is accessible for authorized users.  相似文献

Aggregation and mating of thrips in flowers of Calystegia sepium   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Abstract. 1. Aggregation and mating of Thrips major Uzel and Thrips fuscipennis Haliday (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in the 1-day flowers of Calystegia sepium (L.) R.Br. are described.
2. The number of thrips per flower increased rapidly after flower-opening at dawn and decreased during the evening and following morning.
3. Males patrolled the corolla, attempting to copulate with any females that landed. Their movement was affected by the density of thrips on the corolla. Most females were among the stamens and style, apparently feeding on pollen.
4. These thrips were also abundant in flowers of Filipendula ulmaria (L.) Maxim. They fed on pollen, and grains adhered to them. They may be significant pollinators because of their high frequency of flights.
5. The aggregations appear to be a simple consequence of general flower-finding responses to colour and scent that are particularly elicited by flowers of C.sepium and F.ulmaria. The ecological significance of male aggregations is discussed.  相似文献

New experimental evidence from controlledglasshouse studies was used to testprevious empirical field observations aboutthe interactions of hydrological dynamicswith individual plant species in wetlandhabitats. Manipulation of water levels, andthe presence/ absence of competitorspecies, produced significant morphologicalresponses (e.g. resource allocation toabove- and below-ground structures; plantheight; leaf size; tiller production) inmature individuals of five freshwaterwetland plant species characteristic ofBritish northern poor-fen habitats. Theseresponses provide evidence for potentialadvantages in survival and ability tospread vegetatively. The data also providenew insight into factors controlling thedistribution of wetland plants alonggradients of water table level, in thepresence or absence of competing species.Although there were variations betweenspecies, the effects of competition were,in general, less than those attributable tohydrological regime.  相似文献
