The discussion of the age of some South American Late Cretaceous fossil vertebrate localities by Van Valen led this author to admit the possible persistence of Dinosaurs at the base of the Paleocene. Van Valen's arguments resting on the selachians are reviewed and it can be asserted that the selachian‐bearing localities of the El Molino Formation of Bolivia are Cretaceous and not Tertiary.

Living birds are the most diverse land vertebrates and the heirs of a rich chapter in the evolution of life. The origin of modern birds from animals similar to Tyrannosaurus rex is among the most remarkable examples of an evolutionary transition. A wealth of recently discovered fossils has finally settled the century-old controversy about the origin of birds and it has made the evolutionary saga toward modern birds one of the best documented transitions in the history of life. This paper reviews the evidence in support of the origin of birds from meat-eating dinosaurs, and it highlights the array of fossils that connect these fearsome animals with those that fly all around us.

Sauropod tracks make up only about 2% of the Cameros Basin ichnocenosis, but they are present over the entire time span represented by the Cameros sediments. The makers of these tracks are identified in terms of their associated trackway pattern as either wide or narrow-gauge morphotypes. Narrow-gauge trackways dominate the Tithonian-Berriasian interval. Wide-gauge trackways become notably more common after the Berriasian, although narrow-gauge trackways are still present and dominate the Cameros ecosystems even during the Aptian. At this time, an interesting equilibrium between titanosauriform and non-titanosauriform sauropod trackways is evident, although the latter are somewhat more common. A review of the Iberian sauropod bone record suggests that Turiasauria + Euhelopidae, Rebbachisauridae and Titanosauriformes are the three groups mainly responsible for the Cameros Basin sauropod ichnocenosis.

Four large limestone blocks with dinosaur footprints have been discovered in a large landslide situated in the Sarca Valley (northeast Italy). The trampled sediments have been ascribed to the upper part (Pliensbachian) of the Lower Jurassic Calcari Grigi Formation, which in the Sarca Valley consists of oolitic‐bioclastic limestones. These carbonates were originally deposited on the western margin of the Trento Platform, a paleogeographic structural high that was located in the northern tropical belt at the westernmost end of Tethys. Several footprints form trackways of quadrupedal dinosaurs. The data suggest the presence, within the ichnoassociation, of possible prosauropods and basal Thyrephora. This inference is consistent with the chronological and geographical distribution of both prosauropods and Thyreophora.

Fragmentary remains of ornithomimids (Ornithomimidae indet.) from the Lower Santonian (Upper Cretaceous) Kansai locality in northwestern Fergana (Tajikistan) are described, and the composition of its dinosaurian assemblage is updated.

Ecological studies of extant tetrapod predators indicate that morphologically similar species which coexist in the same habitats routinely reduce interspecific competition for food by regular spacing of body size. The biggest predator species in the assemblage often differ more from one another in size than the smallest species. When coexisting carnivore species do not differ greatly in size, they commonly show morphological differences related to prey handling that may reduce dietary overlap. If carnivore species are very similar in both size and morphology, competition is avoided by habitat partitioning. Two tyrannosaurid species from the late Campanian Dinosaur Park Formation of western Canada are similar in both size and morphology, suggesting that they were segregated on the basis of habitat and/or biogeographic province. However; consideration of the living-space requirements of predator species of such large body size suggests that this kind of spatial separation would only have been possible had tyrannosaurids been more like ectotherms than endotherms in their metabolic rates. Distribution of different large theropod species across different, and surprisingly small (for the size of the animals) portions of Mesozoic landscapes may also account for the remarkably high diversity of morphologically similar large theropods in other dinosaur faunas.

Dinosaurs have captured the popular imagination more than any other extinct group of organisms and are therefore a powerful tool in teaching evolutionary biology. Most students are familiar with a wide variety of dinosaurs and the relative suddenness of their extinction, but few are aware of the tremendous longevity of their time on Earth and the richness of their fossil record. We first review some of the best-known groups of dinosaurs and discuss how their less-specialized relatives elucidate the path through which each evolved. We then discuss our recent discovery of Yinlong downsi, a distant relative of Triceratops, and other fossils from Jurassic deposits in China to exemplify how the continuing discovery of fossils is filling out the dinosaur family tree.

Continental strata of Early and Middle Jurassic age are seldom-exposed, and little is known of the history of sauropod dinosaurs prior to the neosauropod radiation of the end of the Middle Jurassic. Here, we report, in the Middle Jurassic of the Occidental Saharan Atlas (Algerian High Atlas), the discovery of a skeleton, including cranial material, of a new cetiosaurid sauropod. Chebsaurus algeriensis n. g., n. sp. represents the most complete Algerian sauropod available to date, only few remains were found before. To cite this article: F. Mahammed et al., C. R. The first dinosaur remains are described from the Upper Cretaceous (Santonian) Csehbánya Formation, Iharkút, Bakony Mts, Hungary. Eight teeth of herbivorous dinosaurs (Rhabdodontidae indet. Nodosauridae indet.) and four teeth belonging to Theropoda indet. are presented. There are also hundreds of fish, frog, turtle and crocodile bones and teeth embedded in fluvial sand of an alluvial plain. Palaeobiogeographic connections towards Provence, the eastern Alps, and southern Carpathians indicate that the Adriatic microplate bearing the fossiliferous succession was an island temporarily connected to the European continent during Late Cretaceous time.
