Densities of red mullet Mullus surmuletus have declined since 1996 at Cap Martin, Alpes‐Maritimes, France, following colonization by Caulerpa taxifolia . Foraging M. surmuletus were rarely observed over C. taxifolia or the seagrass Posidonia oceanica , but were observed over bare sand and endemic macroalgae. Within colonized sites (where the mean cover of C. taxifolia was 30–100%), fish were concentrated on areas with low cover of C. taxifolia (<21%). A difference in the frequency of observations of foraging groups (17%) was observed between sites with and without C. taxifolia . The observed patterns were probably due to a physical barrier to foraging that is presented by meadows of C. taxifolia . Changes to habitat structure that occur when the substratum is colonized by C. taxifolia influence the accessibility to benthic food resources, and consequently the foraging activities of fish that feed on benthic invertebrates. The decline in density of M. surmuletus at Cap Martin could be the result of fish emigration from colonized sites (unfavourable to the species) to uncolonized sites.  相似文献

We re-examined the distribution of chloroplast DNA (ct-DNA) in the pyrenoid core of Caulerpa okamurae Weber van Bosse and C. lentillifera J. Agardh by fluorescence microscopy after staining the squashes and Technovit sections with DNA fluorochromes such as 4′6-diamidino-2-phenylmdole (DAPI), ethidium bromide, Hoechst 33258 and chromomycin A3. All fluorochromes stained specifically the pyrenoid core on the squashes and Technovit sections. In addition, we present new data on the localization of ct-DNA in the pyrenoid core of two other species of the genus Caulerpa: C. cactoides (Turner) Agardh and C. geminata Harvey.  相似文献

The best available methods were used to search for an-giosperm hormones in the green alga Caulerpa paspa-loides (Bory) Greville. Solvent partitioning of methanol extracts led to acidic ethyl acetate fractions that it were run through high-performance liquid chromatography. Each of the resulting 25 fractions was divided in half so that one half was tested in the dwarf rice or lettuce hypocotyl assays for gibberellins and the other half was methylated and silylated for capillary gas chromatography combined with computerized mass spectrometry. By comparing algal mass spectra with spectra in the extensive library of mass spectra and associated Kovats Retention Indices that MacMillan's Bristol group has amassed, indole-3-acetic acid's presence in the alga was confirmed and dioxindole-3-acetic acid was found. However, despite the presence of several peaks of gibberellin-like activity in the bioassays, no gibberellin or gibberellin metabolite was found in the thousands of full mass spectra examined. The gibberellin-like activity in the acidic ethyl acetate fractions was therefore presumably not from any gibberellin known from vascular plants.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of chloroplasts from 28 of the 73 species of Caulerpa Lamouroux (Chlorophyta, Caulerpales) has been studied to aid in interpreting phylogenetic relationships among the 12 recognized sections. Variations of systematic value include pyrenoid occurrence and fine structure, thylakoid architecture and amount of photosynthate storage. Comparisons of field and culture specimens indicate these characters are consistent. Chloroplast thylakoids are grouped into bands, with the distribution of bands differing among species. In the most common arrangement, bands are evenly distributed throughout the chloroplast. A few species show lateral displacement of bands whereas others have a majority of bands arranged at one end of the chloroplast. Starch is stored cither as one or two large grains (> 1 μm diam.) or numerous small grains (< 0.5 μm diam.). Electron-transparent regions are common in other species in which chloroplasts rarely store starch. Simple, embedded pyrenoids are present in several species of section Sedoideae. An opaque region occurs in chloroplasts of C. elongata which may represent an intermediate stage in the evolutionary loss of the pyrenoid. It is suggested that the chloroplast of Caulerpa evolved, from a large, complex, pyrenoid-containing organelle housing both photosynthetic and amylogenic functions, to a small, structurally simpler one, specialized for photosynthesis alone. A phylogeny of the 12 sections of Caulerpa is constructed, based on chloroplast evolution which agrees with an earlier morphology-based hypothesis on the origin and evolution of Caulerpa.  相似文献

A growth factor (TJF) for a malo-lactic fermentation bacterium has been isolated from tomato juice, and found to be a β-glucoside. The NMR spectra of TJF and its acetate revealed that the glucosyl residue linked to the hydroxyl group at C-2′ or C-4′ of d- or l-pantothenic acid moiety. Then, 2′-O-(β-d-glucopyranosyl)-dl-pantothenic acid (I), 4′-O-(β-d-glucopyranosyl)-dl-pantothenic acid (II) and 4′-O-(β-d-glucopyranosyl)-d(R)-pantothenic acid (II-a) were synthesized, and Il-a and 4′-O-(β-d-glucopyranosyl)-l-pantothenic acid (II-b) were obtained by the optical resolution of the acetate of II. Among the above compounds, II-a was identical with natural TJF regarding to the biological activity, NMR and ORD spectra, and thin-layer chromatography.  相似文献

Since the discovery of the green alga Caulerpa taxifolia in Lake Macquarie (New South Wales, Australia) in 2001, the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries) has attempted various control methods, including covering the alga with granulated sea salt to induce osmotic shock and cell lysis. In Lake Macquarie, C. taxifolia often occurs in patches within beds of the native seagrass Zostera capricorni. Although the effects of the salt treatment on blades of Z. capricorni and infauna have been shown to be minimal, there have been no tests of any effects on other native biota, including seagrass epifauna. In this study, we tested the general hypothesis that the abundance and diversity of epifauna would be reduced by salting. We used a ‘Beyond BACI’ experimental design whereby epifaunal invertebrates were sampled 3 months, 6 weeks and 6 days before and then again after salting. Epifaunal abundances at the putatively impacted (salted) location were compared to those at 4 control locations (where no salt was applied). Abundances of most organisms varied significantly among times and locations with no evidence of the consistent effect of salting on diversity or abundance of epifauna. The study represents an example of the use of large-scale managerial action as a scientific experiment. The attachment of the psammophytic alga Caulerpa mexicana Sond. ex Kütz., a coenocytic green alga, to crushed CaCO3 particles was examined utilizing the scanning electron microscope and fluorescently tagged antivitronectin antibodies. Plants attached to the substrate through morphologically variable tubular rhizoidal extensions that grew from the stolon. In this study, we describe two means of attachment: (i) the rhizoid attachment to limestone gravel by thigmoconstriction, where tubular extensions of the rhizoid wrapped tightly around the substrate and changed morphology to fit tightly into crevices in the limestone, and (ii) through adhesion pads that formed in contact with the limestone granules. Flattened rhizoidal pads were observed to secrete a fibrillar material that contained vitronectin‐like proteins identified through immunolocialization and that facilitated binding of the rhizoid to the substrate.  相似文献

Abstract An invasive, cold‐tolerant strain of the tropical green alga Caulerpa taxifolia was introduced recently in the Mediterranean Sea and along the Californian coast. We screened 50 aquarium and open‐sea C. taxifolia specimens for the presence/absence of an intron located in the rbcL gene of chloroplast DNA. We also reanalysed a total of 229 sequences of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) of ribosomal DNA, combining previously published sequences from different studies with 68 new sequences to complement rbcL data. The introduced Mediterranean strain was found to be characterized by the absence of the rbcL intron and by the occurrence of a particular monomorphic ITS type. A PCR assay based on rbcL gene was developed to detect new introductions of the invasive strain of C. taxifolia. This rapid and inexpensive test could be useful to assist environment managers in the preservation of coastal marine ecosystems.  相似文献
