1. Receptor sites for different amino acids in the facial taste system of the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, were determined from in vivo electrophysiological cross-adaptation experiments. 2. Relatively independent receptor sites were indicated for L-proline, D-proline, D-arginine, L-histidine and L-lysine, as well as those previously reported for L-alanine, L-arginine and D-alanine. 3. The functional isolation of two nerve twigs that were more responsive to D-alanine than to L-alanine or to other test stimuli provided further evidence for the existence of D-alanine sites that are independent from those to L-alanine. 4. Under all cross-adaptation regimes, the taste responses to the majority of test stimuli were reduced. Various possible mechanisms accounting for this generalized reduction in action potential activity during adaptation are discussed.  相似文献

Summary The gill secondary lamellae are generally covered with epithelial cells whose outer surfaces form numerous microvilli. The surface of the primary lamellae is characterised by microridges. A particular type of surface sculpturing seems to be associated with given cell boundaries.Further evidence for the derivation of the air tube and fans which guard its entrance by modification of the basic gill structure has been obtained from both the gross surface architecture and microstructure of the individual cell surfaces. Secondary lamellae are represented by stubby projections which generally have a biserial arrangement. The outer surfaces of the epithelia overlying the capillaries of these respiratory islets are coated with microvilli as in the secondary lamellae. On the other hand, the relatively smooth-surfaced lanes between groups of respiratory islets have a microridged surface similar to that of the primary gill lamellae.It is suggested that previous estimates of surface area, and consequently diffusing capacities of the air-breathing organ, have been low in view of the increased surface, due to both their gross and microstructure. The diet of channel catfish captured near the mouth of a channel carrying heated waters was not significantly different from the diet of catfish captured elsewhere in the same reservoir during the cool months of the year. Summary The endocrine pancreas of the bullhead catfish, Ictalurus nebulosus, and the channel catfish, I. punctatas was studied by light and electron microscopy. In addition to the usual A, B and D cells, a fourth endocrine cell type was consistently observed in the electron microscope. All endocrine cell types were innervated. The vesicles of most of the nerve endings were ultrastructurally different from typical adrenergic and cholinergic vesicles, strongly suggesting the possibility of a third autonomic neurotransmitter serving as a regulator of catfish islet secretion.Supported in part by PHS grant AM 11407 awarded to Dr. Bryce Munger.  相似文献

Abstract

The substrate- and inhibitor-related characteristics of monoamine oxidase (MAO) were studied for catfish brain and liver. The kinetic constants for MAO in both tissues were determined using 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), tyramine and β-phenylethylamine (PEA) as substrates. For both tissues, the Vmax values were highest with 5-HT and lowest with PEA. The Km value for the brain was highest with 5-HT, followed by tyramine and PEA; but for the liver its value was highest with PEA, followed by 5-HT and tyramine, although all values were in the same order of magnitude. The inhibition of MAO by clorgyline and deprenyl by use of 5-HT, tyramine and PEA as substrates showed that the MAO-A inhibitor clorgyline was more effective than the MAO-B inhibitor deprenyl for both catfish tissues; a single form was present since inhibition by clorgyline or deprenyl with 1000 μM PEA showed single phase sigmoid curves. It is concluded that catfish brain and liver contain a single form of MAO, relatively similar to mammalian MAO-A.  相似文献

The genus Pareuchiloglanis, distributed in the Salween, Mekong, Red, Pearl and Yangtze River basins in China, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam, consists of 20 valid species and 5 uncertain species. This study provided a taxonomic revision to Pareuchiloglanis occurring in the Yangtze River. According to the results of a morphological comparison, the type locality of Pareuchiloglanis sinensis was updated to the Nanpan-jiang (the upper Pearl River) basin; five species were identified in Pareuchiloglanis from the Yangtze River basin. Specimens formerly identified as Pareuchiloglanis sinensis from this basin were described as a new species, Pareuchiloglanis chui sp. nov. Moreover, Pareuchiloglanis tianquanensis was synonymized with Pareuchiloglanis sichuanensis. This study provided a key to these two species and three others (Pareuchiloglanis anteanalis, Pareuchiloglanis hupingshanensis and Pareuchiloglanis robusta) from the Yangtze River basin, including information about their geographical distribution. These findings provide an insight into the evolution, distribution and taxonomy of this genus for future studies.  相似文献

MHC class I genes of the channel catfish: sequence analysis and expression   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
 Four cDNAs encoding the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I α chain were isolated from a channel catfish clonal B-cell cDNA library. Sequence analysis suggests these cDNAs represent three different MHC class I loci. All cDNAs encoded conserved residues characteristic of the MHC class I α chain: namely, those involved in peptide binding, salt bridges, disulfide bond formation, and glycosylation. Southern blot analyses of individual outbred and second-generation gynogenetic fish indicated the existence of both polygenic and polymorphic loci. Northern blot studies demonstrated that catfish B, T, and macrophage cell lines transcribed markedly higher levels of class I α and β2-microglobulin (β2m) mRNA than fibroblast cell lines. In addition, immunoprecipitation data showed that a 41 000 M r glycoprotein (presumably class I α) was associated with β2m on the surface of catfish B cells. This latter finding is the first direct evidence for the cell surface association of β2m with the MHC class I α chain on teleost cells and supports the notion that functional MHC class I proteins exist in teleosts. Some species of Clariidae (air breathing catfishes) have extremely well developed (hypertrophied) jaw closing muscles that increase the maximal biting force of these species. As these enlarged jaw muscles tightly cover the suspensoria, which are firmly connected to the neurocranium, we expect diminished lateral expansions during suction for species with hypertrophied jaw muscles. In turn, this could imply a reduced suction performance for these species. Compared to Clarias gariepinus, which has relatively small jaw closers, Clariallabes longicauda shows a clear hypertrophy of the jaw adductors. A kinematic analysis of prey capture in these two species is presented here. As predicted, Clariallabes longicauda shows less lateral expansion (average abduction of the hyoids of 19.0°) than Clarias gariepinus (abduction of 31.1°). However, our data indicate that the decrease in lateral expansion capacity in the species with excessive adductor development is compensated for by a larger and faster ventral expansion of the buccal cavity by depression of the hyoid.  相似文献

The effects of tributyltin (TBT) on the energy metabolism and motility of fish spermatozoa were investigated in vitro in African catfish and common carp. A significant (P<0.05) decrease of the duration and the intensity of motility was observed in catfish spermatozoa exposed to 0.27 microg/l TBT for 24 h. Exposure of catfish spermatozoa to 2.7-27 microg/l TBT caused an instant decrease in ATP content. In the presence of 27 microg/l TBT approximately 55% of the initial ATP concentration in catfish semen was lost after 60 min incubation while AMP concentrations increased and the total adenine nucleotide (TAN) pool remained unchanged. The reduction in sperm ATP levels could not be attributed to cell death since viability decreased only slightly over the period of exposure. In carp by contrast, none of the adenylates concentrations studied (ATP, ADP and AMP) were affected by TBT exposure at any experimental condition. However, carp sperm motility was significantly reduced by exposure to 2.7 microg/l TBT. Among the enzymes investigated only lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in catfish sperm was significantly (P<0.01) affected by 27 microg/l TBT treatment with a reduction in activity of approximately 75%. Compared with carp sperm before TBT exposure, that of catfish had lower adenylate contents and overall lower enzymatic activities; this explains its slower sperm velocity and shorter duration of movement as measured by computer assisted sperm analysis (CASA). The present in vitro study shows that catfish spermatozoa are more sensitive to TBT exposure (and probably to other toxicants) than those of carp.  相似文献
