A 4-year study (1989–1992) of a population of Lipophrys pavo living in a brackish lagoon (Maugio, France) revealed three types of male during the spawning season (April to September): (i) nest-breeder males which are territorial, and have well-developed secondary sexual characteristics; (ii) non-functional males which were abundant only in 1991 when population density was very high and (iii) 1-year-old kleptogamic males with small body size which possess neither secondary sexual organs nor a testicular gland, although their testes are functional and hyperdeveloped (up to 10.5% of carcass weight). The percentage of kleptogamic males was fairly stable in the population (from 7.9 to 10.0%) and highly variable in their age class (from 8.5 to 51.3%). It is suggested that kleptogamy is a conditional strategy adopted by smaller males.  相似文献

An updated molecular phylogeny of the blenny genus Ophioblennius, with a focus on two geographically disjunct morphotypes observed in Brazil, is presented. The analyses showed that specimens from the north‐eastern Brazilian coast are the endemic redlip blenny Ophioblennius trinitatis, but specimens from the southern Brazilian coast are conspecific to an undescribed east Atlantic Ocean (Gulf of Guinea) species, previously unknown in Brazil. Possible explanations for this geographical pattern include: natural larval dispersal and rafting across the Atlantic; an unknown ecological attribute that enabled this species to colonize southern Brazil; oil platforms as introduction vectors.  相似文献

Short-term experiments were used to isolate the detrimental effects of grazer disturbance on young corals, and determine the stage of development at which recruits are no longer susceptible to this disturbance. Artificial substrata containing an algal matrix and coral recruits of different life stages were exposed to grazing by epilithic algal matrix (EAM) feeding combtoothed blennies, Salarias fasciatus. Single polyp recruits were vulnerable to grazer disturbance, while multi-polyp recruits (ca. 6–8 polyps) survived with evidence of minor damage in the form of tissue and polyp loss. The result indicates that blennies, although small and possessing weak dentition, can negatively influence the survival of young coral recruits. The protruding structure of micro-nubbins, representing juvenile corals were not damaged, suggesting that coral achieving that size and form can escape such damage. The mimic blenny Aspidontus taeniatus Quoy & Gaimard is well known for its resemblance to the juvenile and adult cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus (Valenciennes) in colour and shape. As various reef fishes including piscivores actively approach the cleaner wrasse to solicit cleaning by posing, two types of benefits have been suggested for this resemblance, that is, protective mimicry and aggressive mimicry. In aggressive mimicry, the mimic blenny is supposed to have considerable opportunities to bite the fin of deceived fishes when they pose, but some studies have confirmed that fin biting does not seem to be the main feeding tactic in the blenny in nature. Here, we examined the feeding tactics including fin biting by the mimic blenny in relation to its body size in a field observational survey in the coral reefs of Sesoko Island, Okinawa, Japan. The blenny was observed feeding mainly on four food items: the tentacles of Christmas tree worms, the mantle edges of boring clams, the demersal eggs in damselfishes’ nests and the fins of fishes. The feeding frequency by fin biting significantly decreased with body size, while that by egg predation significantly increased with body size of the blenny. When predating on eggs, the blenny was vigorously attacked by egg‐guarding fish, but often succeeded in raiding their nests by forming a feeding group. When feeding by fin biting, the blenny attacked prey fish without performing any cleaning. The ratio of fin biting was considerably higher in small‐sized blennies, suggesting reliance on this feeding tactic because of a difficulty in conducting a risky egg predation. Thus, our results suggest that the mimic blenny utilizes aggressive mimicry only when it is small as an alternative feeding tactic.  相似文献

The testes and associated accessory organs of two blenniid fishes are described. The testicular organs of Salarias fasciatus consist of a testicular gland adjacent to the testis, chambered seminal vesicles serving as a reservoir for spermatozoa and testicular blind ouches. Ecsenirts bicolor has no testicular gland, has elongated chambered seminal vesicles whii are not used as a reservoir for spermatozoa, and has testicular blind pouches.  相似文献

Diel patterns in reproductive and feeding activities in the blenniid fish Petroscirtes breviceps, a nest-spawner that provides paternal care, were studied in southern Japan. Spawning primarily occurred in the early morning, and males occasionally mated with several females at the same time. Males may benefit from the simultaneous spawning of multiple females, as individuals are able to allocate the remainder of the daytime period to foraging. This hypothesis was tested using comparative studies of blenniid fishes. This study suggests that time cost associated with reproduction affects the diel pattern in spawning.  相似文献

Information on the genital morphology of male and female Lipophrys pholis is provided, as well as for two other sympatric blenniid species, Coryphoblennius galerita and Lipophrys trigloides. The use of non-invasive sex determination procedures described may be extremely useful not only for ecological studies but also as a proxy for the detection of environmental exposure to endocrine disruptive chemicals, given that blennies have been proposed as potential sentinel species for chemical contamination.  相似文献

Behavioural observations were carried out on a sex role reversed population of the blenny Salaria pavo to investigate possible mate choice behaviour of the females. Females mated with relatively larger males, with a larger head crest, anal gland and genital papilla, which had more eggs in their nests and that courted the female. Thus, these male traits were potentially assessed by females when choosing their mates. In order to mate, females visited one to four males (eight females spawned with the first male they had visited and eight visited more than one male). The majority of the females spawned with the last male visited but three of them returned to mate with males visited previously (two with the penultimate visited male). Additionally, the outcome of the first visit of each female depended on the quality of the males: males that were accepted on this first visit had larger head crest than rejected males. Therefore, the mate searching model that best fitted the data was a threshold tactic that allowed the searching individual to return to any potential mate visited before, i.e. that allowed for complete recall. Moreover, three females returned to mate with males rejected earlier during the search, which indicates that they lowered their thresholds. These results suggest that females use a 'one step decision' tactic to search for mates. In this tactic, females mate with males that satisfy an adjustable threshold criterion, balancing the quality of the mates expected to find in the next step of the search and the effort of finding them.  相似文献

The patterns of agonistic behaviour and substratum preferences were investigated in captive groups of juveniles of Lipophrys pholis (Blenniidae), Coryphoblennius galerita (Blenniidae) and Gobius cobitis (Gobiidae). In monospecific groups, size was an excellent predictor of the rank attained by each individual. In heterospecific groups, both C. galerita and L. pholis were dominant over G. cobitis of similar size, and C. galerita dominated L. pholis . Although G. cobitis showed higher rates of activity and of attacks per minute, and a higher ratio of attacks over threats, all these measures were depressed in the presence of either blenniid. In both blennies, in monospecific groups, the dominance rank of each fish was a good predictor of the time spent inside shelters. G. cobitis occupied preferentially the sandy substratum both in mono- and heterospecific groups. Both blennies, when in monospecific groups, occupied preferentially the rocky substratum, with C. galerita showing the highest level of selectivity. In nature, C. galerita also showed a marked preference for rocky substrata, while G. cobitis was especially abundant in mixed bottoms. L. pholis occupied an intermediate position. In the blenniids studied, competition for access to shelter may be one major functional consequence of agonistic behaviour in non-reproductive contexts.  相似文献
