Petroleum pollution is a global problem that requires effective and accessible remediation strategies that takes ecosystem functioning into serious consideration. Bioremediation can be an effective tool to address the challenge. In this study, we used a mesocosm experiment to evaluate the effects of locally sourced and community produced biochar and compost amendments on diesel-contaminated soil. At the end of the 90-day experiment, we quantified the effects of the amendments on total petroleum hydrocarbons (C9-C40) (TPH) and soil pH, organic matter, aggregate stability, soil respiration, extractable phosphorus, extractable potassium, and micronutrients (Mg, Fe, Mn, and Zn). We observed significantly higher TPH degradation in compost-amended soils than in controls and soils amended with biochar. We propose that the addition of compost improved TPH biodegradation by augmenting soil nutrient content and microbial activity. Our results suggest that community-accessible compost can improve TPH biodegradation, and that implementation is possible at the community level.  相似文献

Summary The chemical composition and leaching loss of applied fertilizers were measured from four waste materials derived from china clay extraction. Two waste materials, overburden and mica, had a higher nitrogen and calcium concentration, and were more efficient than sand wastes for the retention of these elements when applied as fertilizers. The possibility of using overburden and mica wastes as amendments for sand waste reclamation is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Two outdoor pot experiments were conducted in two consecutive years under outdoor conditions during the wheat growing season in Saudi Arabia to determine the effects of urea and certain compound fertilizers (NPK), compared to the effects of the nematicide fenamiphos on the cereal cyst nematode (CCN), Heterodera avenae, and wheat growth. The results showed that all of the treatments, except the fertilizer diammonium phosphate (DAP), reduced the number of nematode cysts/root system and increased (P ⩽ 0.05) the dry weight of nematode-infected wheat plants. Fenamiphos and urea resulted in the best control, followed by the NPK fertilizers. The combined application of urea and fenamiphos resulted in the most significant effect in decreasing (P ⩽ 0.05) the number of cysts/root system and increasing (P ⩽ 0.05) the growth of nematode-infected wheat plants.  相似文献

The concept biologically incompatible technology is offered to explain the relationship between constituent bacteria, women's menstrual cycles, and a reactive technology that converged to create the ideal environment for the S. aureus bacteria to live and flourish in some women. 1 Background

The U.S. Government has encouraged shifting from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) to alternatively fueled vehicles such as electric vehicles (EVs) for three primary reasons: reducing oil dependence, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing Clean Air Act criteria pollutant emissions. In comparing these vehicles, there is uncertainty and variability in emission factors and performance variables, which cause wide variation in reported outputs.

2 Objectives

A model was developed to demonstrate the use of Monte Carlo simulation to predict life cycle emissions and energy consumption differences between the ICEV versus the EV on a per kilometer (km) traveled basis. Three EV technologies are considered: lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, and nickel metal hydride batteries.

3 Methods

Variables were identified to build life cycle inventories between the EVs and ICEV. Distributions were selected for each of the variables and input to Monte Carlo Simulation soft-ware called Crystal Ball 2000®.

4 Results and Discussion

All three EV options reduce U.S. oil dependence by shifting to domestic coal. The life cycle energy consumption per kilometer (km) driven for the EVs is comparable to the ICEV; however, there is wide variation in predicted energy values. The model predicts that all three EV technologies will likely increase oxides of sulfur and nitrogen as well as particulate matter emissions on a per km driven basis. The model shows a high probability that volatile organic compounds and carbon monoxide emissions are reduced with the use of EVs. Lead emissions are also predicted to increase for lead-acid battery EVs. The EV will not reduce greenhouse gas emissions substantially and may even increase them based on the current U.S. reliance on coal for electricity generation. The EV may benefit public health by relocating air pollutants from urban centers, where traffic is concentrated, to rural areas where electricity generation and mining generally occur. The use of Monte Carlo simulation in life cycle analysis is demonstrated to be an effective tool to provide further insight on the likelihood of emission outputs and energy consumption.  相似文献

Summary The application of fulvic acid to a saline-sodic soil augmented the solubility of zinc by thousands fold. Zinc fulvate when applied at levels equivalent to that of zinc sulphate was more effective in enhancing diffusion of zinc in the soil. Application of gypsum, zinc sulphate and fulvic acid significantly increased dry matter yield and uptake of zinc by rice crop in a saline-sodic soil. Application of gypsum with pressmud or with fulvic acid and zinc sulphate resulted in significantly higher yield and zinc uptake than in other treatments.  相似文献

Whether use of oxygen-rich gasoline additives to reduce air pollution is a cause of acute adverse health effects is an ongoing concern in the United States. Attention has focused in particular on use of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE, CAS #1634-04-4) and, despite considerable published research, debate persists regarding its potential for adverse health effects. To better understand the debate, we critically reviewed published and unpublished reports to assess whether differences in methodological approach or quality could explain the variable results reported. We considered studies on acute human health effects of inhalation exposure to MTBE either alone or in gasoline (19 reports) as well as clinical use of parenteral MTBE to dissolve cholesterol gall stones (12 reports). Each study was reviewed from three perspectives (epidemiology, industrial hygiene, and, clinical diagnostics), judged satisfactory, limited adequacy, or unsatisfactory for each criterion, and grouped into one of three categories from most to least adequate in overall methodology. The studies judged most adequate on individual criteria and those with highest overall adequacy found no significant association between MTBE exposure and symptoms. We propose that the persistent debate has been fueled by the findings of methodologically weak hypothesis-generating studies.  相似文献
