Old-growth forests are common in the snowy, montane environments of coastal western North America. To examine dynamics of a stand containing four canopy tree species (Abies amabilis, Chamaecyparis nootkatensis, Tsuga mertensiana and T. heterophylla), we used four stem-mapped, 50 m ×50 m plots. From measurements of annual rings, we obtained ages from basal discs of 1,336 live trees, developed master chronologies for each species, reconstructed early growth rates, and delineated periods of release. The stand was ancient; individuals of all four species exceeded 900 years in age, and the oldest tree exceeded 1,400 years. The four plots differed in the timing of events, and we found no evidence of major, stand-level disturbance. Instead the stand was structured by small-scale patch dynamics, resulting from events that affected one to several trees and initiated episodes of release and relatively rapid early growth. The species differed in age structure and dynamics. A. amabilis and T. heterophylla had a classical reverse-J age structure indicative of stable populations, whereas C. nootkatensis and T. mertensiana appeared to rely on local episodes of increased recruitment, which were often separated by centuries, and were probably related to multiple-tree gaps that occurred infrequently. However, such gaps could be considered normal in the long-term history of the stand, and thus these species with their long life spans can persist. Most individuals of all four species grew extremely slowly, with trees typically spending centuries in the understory before reaching the canopy, where they were able to persist for additional centuries. Thus, the key features of this forest are the very slow dynamics dominated by small-scale events, and the slow growth of stress-tolerant trees.  相似文献

Background

Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) is a computerized database of information about genes and heritable traits in human populations, based on information reported in the scientific literature. Our objective was to establish an automated text-mining system for OMIM that will identify genetically-related cancers and cancer-related genes. We developed the computer program CGMIM to search for entries in OMIM that are related to one or more cancer types. We performed manual searches of OMIM to verify the program results.  相似文献

Selecting entomopathogenic fungal isolates for use as biocontrol agents requires an assessment of their growth and virulence characteristics as affected by environmental conditions. Here we demonstrate a wide temperature and moisture range for colony growth, effective conidial germination and virulence against Pissodes strobi Peck (white pine weevil) of several isolates of Lecanicillium Gams and Zare, an entomopathogenic fungus distributed worldwide and indigenous to forests on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. In order to examine the potential Lecanicillium as a biological control agent, the pathogenicity of isolates collected from different geographical locations on P. strobi cadavers was assessed, and colony growth at different temperatures was evaluated. Colony growth was evident between 5 and 30°C, with optimal growth occurring at 25°C. Various combinations of water activity (0.55, 0.76, 0.85 and 0.99 a w) and temperature (10, 15, 20, and 25°C) were also used to evaluate environmental impacts on conidial germination and cumulative mycosis of adult P. strobi. Certain Lecanicillium isolates displayed xerophilic (0.85 a w) or psychrophilic (10°C) growth optima. Ultimately, identifying the abiotic limits of this entomopathogenic fungus will be used to determine which isolates have potential for future in situ biocontrol trials.  相似文献

Soils play an important role in the global carbon cycle, and can be major source or sink of CO2 depending upon land use, vegetation type and soil management practices. Natural and human impact on soil carbon concentration and storage is poorly understood in native north Australian savanna, yet this represents the largest carbon store in the ecosystem. To gain understanding of possible management impacts on this carbon pool, soil organic carbon (SOC) of the top 1m of red earth sands and sandy loams common in the region was sampled at 5 sites with different vegetation cover and site history (fire regime and tree removal). SOC was high when compared to other published values for savannas and was more comparable with dry-deciduous tropical forests. Sites sampled in this study represent high rainfall savannas of northern Australia (> 1700 mm annual rainfall) that feature frequent burning (2 in 3 years or more frequent) and a cycle of annual re-growth of tall C4 grasses that dominate the savanna understorey. These factors may be responsible for the higher than expected SOC levels of the surface soils, despite high respiration rates. Medium term fire exclusion (15–20 years) at one of the sampled sites (Wildlife Park) dramatically reduced the grassy biomass of the understorey. This site had lower SOC levels when compared to the grass dominated and frequently burnt sites, which may be due to a reduction in detrital input to surface (0–30 cm) soil carbon pools. Exclusion of trees also had a significant impact on both the total amount and distribution of soil organic carbon, with tree removal reducing observed SOC at depth (100 cm). Soil carbon content was higher in the wet season than that in the dry season, but this difference was not statistically significant. Our results indicated that annual cycle of grass growth and wildfire resulted in small carbon accumulation in the upper region of the soil, and removal of woody plants resulted in significant carbon losses to recalcitrant, deep soil horizons greater than 80 cm depth.  相似文献

Background

Many drugs of natural origin are hydrophobic and can pass through cell membranes. Hydrophobic molecules must be susceptible to active efflux systems if they are to be maintained at lower concentrations in cells than in their environment. Multi-drug resistance (MDR), often mediated by intrinsic membrane proteins that couple energy to drug efflux, provides this function. All eukaryotic genomes encode several gene families capable of encoding MDR functions, among which the ABC transporters are the largest. The number of candidate MDR genes means that study of the drug-resistance properties of an organism cannot be effectively carried out without taking a genomic perspective.  相似文献

A common garden study was conducted with seedlings of the interior spruce complex [Picea glauca (Monch) Voss and Picea. engelmannii Parry and their hybrids], comparing seedling height growth using open-pollinated orchard families and wild-stand (WS) families from the same breeding zone. Phenotypic variances of three bulked orchard seedlots and three WS seedlots did not differ. Orchard seedlots had generally higher within-family variance components than WS families. To examine year-to-year variation in orchard seedlots, three seedlots, composed of the same 18 orchard families collected in three different years, were evaluated in the same common garden study. Family mean heights within the three crop years were statistically not different; however, large rank changes in family mean heights and family variances were observed. This study shows that orchard seed derived from breeding programs does not reduce phenotypic variability in commercial plantations. In spite of the moderate to high selection intensities applied to the selection of orchard parents, large amounts of phenotypic variation are maintained because of the lack of coancestry in the orchard pollen cloud and large temporal variation in mating success and fecundity of the various parents contributing to the crop.  相似文献
